60 Minutes on the impact of antivaccination lobbying

Occasionally painful to watch.

Those who spread misinformation about vaccination are among the most unsympathetic people I know about.
deathcowsays...

I think people should blindly trust pharmaceutical companies. All the modern products you see on TV every night are really improving the lives of insurance company executives. For profit health care systems are looking out for you.

Ornthoronsays...

@deathcow: There's many things that can be said about the pharmaceutical industry, but this video is not about that. The subject at hand is that children are suffering easy-to-prevent diseases, and sometimes dying horrible deaths because of misinformation spread by people who got their information from Google University. Do you have a comment about that?

It's entirely possible to utilize the extent of medical knowledge the human race has accumulated over the last 100 years without "blindly trusting pharmaceutical companies".

CelebrateApathysays...

@Ornthoron: Obviously you're just a shill for big pharma. How can you possibly believe that thousands of doctors and decades of proven medical science are smarter than Jenny McCarthy and some lady in Australia with no medical training. I mean, obviously all you need is one nursing coarse a long time ago and you can be way more informed than scientific consensus.

kymbossays...

I find this incredibly hard to watch.

This shit makes me feel sick. That children's lives are put at risk from ignorant parents rolling the dice by not immunising just terrifies me. White people problems. Parents in the developing world would kill for our immisation opportunities.

marblessays...

Antivaccination lobbying? Misinformation? LMAO! Big Pharma is the single most government-protected industry and has MSM and so called "journalists" shilling for them. Analyze the way this piece is presented. From the tugging of heartstrings with the babies to the way they edited the interview and presented Dr. Scheibner -- It's classic propaganda.

The facts: vaccines are cheap to produce and exempt from direct liability. Our for-profit health care system doesn't care if a small percentage of patients suffer damage. Big Pharma doesn't care if a large percentage of patients suffer damage, as long as the patients continue to buy more of their drugs.

and never would the government be in bed with them by creating a scare over an epidemic that can averted by regular washing of hands, just so the government is "forced" to buy a whole bunch of vaccinations... nope, never... i means there's other ways to finance campaigns to stay in office, so you can spend 30-70% of your time meeting with the lobbies who paid your way into power

British Doctor Faked Data Linking Vaccines to Autism, and Aimed to Profit From It
I only have one thing to say to people who directly trade the lives of children for profit - Bowels in or bowels out?

Documents emerge proving Dr Andrew Wakefield innocent; BMJ and Brian Deer caught misrepresenting the facts

Dr Wakefield demands retraction from BMJ after documents prove innocence from allegations of vaccine autism data fraud

Interview with Dr Andrew Wakefield about the British Medical Journal, science and vaccines (Part 1)

Interview with Dr Andrew Wakefield - the structure of scientific revolutions (Part 2)

Edit:
Dr Wakefield:
"Will the mainstream media now take this real story, the real facts, and actually do their job as journalists and report the facts? Will they report the truth? I doubt it. Why? Because they're owned. Their salaries are paid, albeit indirectly, in large part by pharmaceutical revenues. And the first thing that will happen when they try and do a story which deconstructs these arguments, the BMJ's arguments, and actually reconstructs them in light of the truth, [is that] there will be a call from their advertisers, saying [no]. So what will the mainstream media do? Will it live up to its job, its duty to the people to report the truth, or will it show complete disinterest? Anderson Cooper has been presented with the same nine questions. What was your story based upon? Show us the facts. Did you do your homework? Now are you going to pay similar attention to these documented historical facts? We shall see."

Excellent points. Please join with me in voting for any republican or democrat in 2012.

^ There are fragments of truth in those articles weaved together into a completely incorrect and paranoid narrative. Here's one of the articles you linked:
http://www.naturalnews.com/030868_vaccines_autism.html
Paranoid ranting along the lines of "Oh noes! Table salt contains poisonous Chlorine and Sodium!". The "sources" don't reinforce the narrative of the article, at all.

You have to be a conspiracy theorist to believe these things. Why would medical researchers conspire in this manner? So that they can sell cheap vaccines instead of very expensive medicine to treat disease outbreaks?

Conspire in what manner? Researchers don't sell vaccines. The article says nothing about a conspiracy.

There is no narrative either.

Why waste your time arguing with conspiracy theorists? You should be doing something about your failure at reading comprehension.

BTW "fragments of truth" and "completely incorrect" are contradictory statements.

Oh, man. After four something years on videosift it is amazing to see so many arguments recycled. At one point in time, there were several virologists and biologists, including my wife, on videosift. It was nice to hear them argue with people like you marbles. It is so sad to see the websites you view as veracious sources of information.

Don't worry - I found the Truth on the internet!

9-11 was an inside job vaccines don't work the moon landing was faked aliens are among us the weight of peer-reviewed scientific consensus just means big (pharma) business is controlling everything!!1!1!one!11!

The "doctors" who say that vaccination is bad and diseases are good should be locked in a room with a patient with antibiotic resistant TB.
"Just breath deeply, doctor. You're safe unless your body Wants to get sick."

Opus_Moderandisays...

Opinion: I think this report is an appeal to emotion which is extremely difficult to overcome (objectively) because it involves the death of infants.

Fact: The instances of infectious diseases since the discovery of vaccination are significantly lower than periods prior to.

Opinion: I think what they (lobbyists) are saying is that if you overcome a disease naturally your immune system will be stronger because of it. What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, as the saying goes.

Fact: A vaccination is actually a weaker form of the disease being vaccinated against.

Fact: The leading anti-vaccination lobbyist has no formal medical training...

Opinion: ... And I'm guessing a lot of people in this thread don't either. I know I don't. Everybody has the same information available to them, I guess it's how you interpret it.

Fact: I don't have children and no one close to me has ever lost a child due to an infectious disease. And they are all vaccinated. None of them are autistic.

MycroftHomlzsays...

Vaccines are not just weak or dead forms of the virus you are protecting against. They can also be parts of the virus. They do work by teaching your body's immune system to recognize certain foreign bodies as disease.

messengersays...

No matter what you think about vaccinations, this piece was a meaningless attack piece. On the one side, grieving parents who cry and say how sad they are while saying nothing authoritative about vaccines, and on the other side, two wingnuts who are fervent and dogmatic, and not necessarily representative of the anti-vaccine lobby as a whole. I have worked with activist organizations, and they sure can attract weirdos, but it doesn't invalidate the issue itself.

Very disappointing for 60 Minutes. It's the same style as the CBC piece on homeopathy.

To be clear, I'm knocking the style of this piece because it removes credibility from anything presented. An opinionated journalist can make any opinion convincing.

(TLDR - vaccines work better than nothing , risk is less than the gains , other areas of medicen are worse and could be improved cheaply )

I always understood it this way

When you receive a vaccine there is a risk it will fuck you up , but that risk is lower than the risk of getting fucked up by the thing is protecting against , and on top of that the more people vaccinated the lower the risk there is to the rest of the population of getting fucked up by the virus , even those non Immunized.

We have been using vaccines for a resnable amount of time , i would have thought if a given vacine ended up having more negative side effects in people than the benefit of it stopping a virus you would find out prity soon , And I would not be suprized if occasionaly there is a fuck up but in the end from what i understand the numbers of people already saved and saved on a daily bassis out-way the numbers that have been negatively effected ( bare in mind you dont know in advance who willhave negative affect from it so its not like you are targeting people)

The things to improve in medicen in general is DNA profiling so that we can understand those people that do have negative effects to things and then improve medicen for them.

Its amusing how people are concerned about vaccines when the way general medican is proscribed is far worse simply because of how each human reacts different to things and this causes us to have to trile and error our way through varouse drugs in-till we find a good fit for a given individual, this is something I think we will improve allot in the future when we can process individual peoples DNA and use computing to close down on problems. another aspect of medicine thats fucked up is the whole doigonses and the fact that its often hard for pataints to exsplain whats wrong with them and for docters to work out whats wrong I think this could be greatly improved in the future as well.

Having said all that we have come a LONG LONG way since the 70s.

Citing sources from clearly biased websites and passing them off as fact because of their poor or biased sources, or because you WANT to believe it sooo bad it is the only thing you have to cling to, is not an effective way of convincing me of your position on an argument.

I'm looking at you Marbles...

Here is a hypothetical example.
