this is the channel i had in mind when i first started posting videos here on the sift.
mainly because we do not have one and many times i felt the channel tags lacked when it came to this style and genre of music.
since we seem to be split on how new channels should be submitted let me be the first to put my neck on the chopping block, but before you arbitrarily dismiss my creation idea let me make my case.
what exactly do i mean by electronica?
the electronica channel will be a sub genre channel just like rock and roll, blues or hip hop.
lets consider just what electronica may be.
electronica is any music that is in whole or part created by:synthesizer, samples, loops, digitized media and can even be considered electronica when accompanied by organic instruments.synthesizers were started being experimented with in the late 50's so that is a fairly large chunk of music history and has influenced multiple genres and styles of music.
now that we have established WHAT electronica encompasses, lets take a look at what could possibly be considered appropriate for the electronica tag:
steve miller band-fly like an eagle-electronica/classic rock
flock of seagulls-i ran-electronica/new wave
pink floyd-several different species of furry animals gathered together in a cave grooving with a pict-electronica/acid rock
NIN-wish-electronica/industrial/punk
sasha and digweed-remake of enjoy the silence-electronica/techno/trance
crystal method-high roller-electronica
diary of dreams-the curse-electronica/goth
VNV nation-illusion-electronica
KMFDM-WWIII-electronica/metal
lunatic calm-leave you behind-electronica/post punk

i could go on for hours but suffice to say electronica would give us sifters who post mainly music a tag that can help narrow the field down a bit and would help those who may wish to know upfront what kind of music they may be listening to and 60 years is a pretty huge well of music history to draw from.

i can only speak for myself but i have over 100 videos that will fit into this channel but i know:
evil disco man
kulpims
eklek
paul4dirt
geo321
volumptuous
stingray
erik5637(forgot that actual numbers..sorry bud)
farhad2000
alien concept
and soon to have a massive electronica library-playwithfire
and many others here have large archives also that would fit into this channel.(if i forgot anyone my apologies)

so there we have it kids.i leave my new channel in your hands.
i think i made my case though.
and on a side note:
i am not a purist, you will not see me argue over if a song is hard trance or ambient.happy hardcore or hard house.
if it uses non-organic instruments it is electronica, even the awful stuff (and there is some awful electronica out there).
vote away kiddies......

Interesting to see we have so many electronica fans here. I'm definitely for it.

I only rediscovered electronica a three or four years back, basically when I found pandora. I do remember being shocked when I stumbled over the Wikipedia page listing all the subgenres of electronica. How in the hell can there be ~200 defined subgenres? That question haunts me almost as much as the fact that there is not only a genre for viking folk metal, but there are enough such bands that someone can make a 10 best list. Has the whole world gone mad?

'Electronica' is an antiquated 1990's marketing term for electronic music, much like 'Alternative' was a marketing term for rock, which has since been replaced by 'indie'. When I think of 'electronica', I think of more commercial electronic music. It just wouldn't feel right to invoke electronica on Aphex Twin or Squarepusher. 'Electronic music' is a timeless term that gives electronic musicians more respect and ties them to the larger history of electronic music, which dates back to the 1950's.

Electronic Music would also be more inclusive, because it would include early electronic music, like Stockhausen, Steve Reich, music concrete, the Theremin and other such awesomeness. Electro-Acoustic music (electronic music that uses live instruments) would also be covered by this term.

I'm not a purist or an overly protective electronic music fanboy, I'm just particular about music terminology. Don't even get me started on 'Classical Music'. (Classical music is a sub genre of concert music that ceased to exist hundred of years ago - think Mozart and Haydn.) Concert music, not classical. Electronic music, not electronica.

2 cents from a musician.

as i have already told DFT.
i agree with him but i submit that electronic would be confusing for those who love engineering and new tech gadgets and electronic music, while more succinct and accurate would be two things:
too long a channel assignment
and
we already have a music channel.
the electronica channel is using a coined phrase to express the content.
so now instead of just having "music" we will also have "electronica" to express the sub genre.
and 100 points shall be awarded to DFT for mentioning the theremin.
and i shall now proceed in downloading DFT's entire music library.

and thanks for all your support guys.
since i was the first up on the roster for community voting on channels i was a bit trepidatious.

3 hours left. Unless there's a massive sleeper cell of anti-electronica channel voters scheming in the background for a surge I think this was the largest landslide vote to come out in my time. Congrats.em>>> ^enoch:

how long does a poll remain up?days?weeks?
