Zero Punctuation: Skate 2

This week Zero Punctuation breaks a few bones to review Skate 2.

I knew before I watched this that he was going to give this game a slightly unfair review, simply because he's not a skater himself. He does admit that it's a game by and for skateboarders and might not be easy to play or appeal to gamers in general.

I used to skate quite a bit so to me, these games are amazing. The controls, cameras, etc are all spot-on for those in the scene. I'll never go back to Tony Hawk.

I'm not a skater. I grew up on PC games in the early 90s.
I believe that a game can challenge people and still be fun. Apparently nowadays if you don't grasp or solve it in the first 10 minutes a game is bad.

That being said Skate is exactly what it pretends to be to be. A halfway realistic Skateboard game (just avoid multiplayer).

It's not about the game being hard (which it can be) but rather the game let's you explore and discover things rather than spoon feed them.

Skate 2 is great. I love it.

I am never going to play a Tony Hawk game again as long as there are Skate games.

I was one of those people who entered the realism cheat in TH2 so it would feel more like real skating.
I hated the fact that I had to do all these crazy unrealistic moves. I wanted a game where a 360 kickflip to 5-0 was worth a good score and TH definitely was not that sort of game.

Yahtzee is one of the worst and funniest game reviewers out there, but his humor is wearing thin. It's a bad sign when your mind begins to wander, indicating there's no substance other than his unique usage of genital related humor. He doesn't enjoy most video games -- even the good ones (usually because of something he doesn't understand and automatically labels a problem), so why should I bother listening to his seemingly endless bouts of whining about game mechanics he hasn't familiarized himself with. It's one thing to recognize the faults in a game, even a kick ass one (that's how you improve future games) but it's another to base your opinion of a game solely by its faults. I don't care if he's just being a contrary for the sake of being a contrary, he's an untrustworthy source. If you haven't played the game, I would go as far to say, don't bother watching his reviews; they're too misleading and not really that funny any more.

After playing Skate2 for the last three weeks, I'm selling the game.

I've been a hardcore THPS addict since the 1st release, and I was very excited for the release of this game. Don't get me wrong, the graphics, physics, moves, camera, tricks, parks etc are all stellar. But the controls for me are just way off the mark. It's far too "real", as opposed to THPS in how to approach grinds/ramps/etc.

Some things are much easier in Skate2, but a lot are way far more difficult, to annoyingly impossible.

Easy there tiger.

He's not a 'reviewer' at all.

He's a Critic.

Big difference.

He's never claimed to be a source of any information as to whether or not you should actually buy a game. You don't watch these videos to find that out, you watch them to be entertained.

If you are no longer entertained by them, all well and good... but I am, I still watch them.

Yet I'm sure he pushes and pulls sales figures through his opinions. He may not pretend to be a serious reviewer, but semantics of what he is or isn't aren't really that important.

Well, they kind of are.

If he CLAIMED to be a reviewer then you could take him to task on not being fair on a game, on not taking into consideration x & y. But he doesn't, his reviews are FOR ENTERTAINMENT.

I have no doubt that what he says may sway people's decisions on purchasing a game or not, but that doesn't mean to say he should be 'careful' with what he says, or more fair... it just means that people will purchase games (or not) based on very little information.
