^ I agree with this guy, the first part anyway.

For some reason, I find these supernatural characters (vampires, werewolves, Harry Potter) utterly uncompelling.

NetRunnersays...

I'm not caught up yet, but I'm close enough that I know/recognize the King of Mississippi, and don't wanna watch for fear of getting spoiled on something right around the corner...

But I'll lend my vote, because I love this series.

Tymbrwulfsays...

I'll upvote the video for the fact that it calls out us meatbags as exactly what we are, and calls out exactly what we do to get our amenities.

Just as an aside, anyone who's ever bought a piece of electronics equipment such as a computer supported child labor and unfair labor laws. How else do you think this stuff got so cheap?

The show itself? I'd give it a 2/10 on acting, and a 4/10 on the story. But thousands upon thousands of people seem to disagree with me and I don't know why...

xxovercastxxsays...

The big appeal of the X-Men comics is what's usually called "Mutants as a metaphor". Themes of discrimination, isolation, hatred, fear of the unknown, confusion and misunderstanding are all undercurrents of the X-Men story lines. These reflect the real-world tribulations, past and present, of blacks, gays, women, Jews, atheists, pagans and even the average ostracized teenager.

Without ever seeing True Blood, it's pretty obvious that this is "Vampires as a metaphor" and it's probably safe to say that explains its appeal.

Xaielaosays...

True Blood is absolutely worth watching, all three seasons. It's well acted and well written and each episode is compelling and almost always end like this, just making you beyond eager for the next episode.

That said, season 3 is incredible so far and with only three episodes left I cannot wait to see what happens. I am very happy to see how solid Season 3 has been so far, season 2 was not quite so stellar and wasn't as good as the first, but still very much worth watching.

It's soft-core porn with delusions of Twilight.

While soft core porn is perhaps leaning in the right direction. You must take into account that it is on HBO and 'all' of their shows could qualify as soft core porn.

And as to twilight wanna be. You do know it is based upon a series of novels written starting in 2001, where as the twilight series began about 7 years later (according to Wiki, I cannot stand those movies so I'm sure I'd dislike the books.) The vampires of True Blood are much more traditional in their attitudes, ambitions and for many, their attitude towards humanity. And above all, they certainly don't twinkle in the sunlight, they cook.

@Cyberbeast and Xaielao:

I was replying to someone who admits they "don't get" the genre. I was merely giving them the Fox News explanation.

I have watched the show, and, in between gay love scenes (I'm not homophobic, just grossed out, I wouldn't like watching two fat people go at it either) I find it quite enjoyable.

Matthusays...

Ya the gayness is kinda... not for me lol. But I guess they should be applauded for pushing the envelope insofar as depicting reality. I s'pose.

Anyhow, the acting ought to get much more than a 2/10 some of the actors are a solid 6 or 7 on 10. The story is a 7.5/10 at least maybe an 8.

So couple average acting with an above average storyline, in a popular genre and you have a hit show. I like it, and the vampires dont sparkle in the fucking sun.

Abel_Priscsays...

*SPOILER WARNING*
Actually, the plot is EXACTLY like Twilight. The first season, anyway (I stopped watching after that). Let's see... Human girl meets vampire, they fall in love, which is completely uncommon for a vampire to do. One of them has the power to read thoughts (FOR NO REASON AT ALL), but for some reason can't read their love interest's thoughts (FOR NO REASON AT ALL). He then spends the entire time protecting her from other more violent vampires. Hmmm... That all sounds very familiar. Then! Vampire has to go away for a while, asks a rival mystical being to protect her, the girl is heartbroken, and the other guy is there to comfort her and she starts to see him as a love interest as well. Hmmm... That also sounds painfully familiar! Both stories even share exact same lines of dialogue.
I understand that this is a very very broad overview, but I could honestly go on and on about the blatant similarities between the two popular vampire stories. One has a TON of filler side-stories about politics and other character development. But then again, True Blood also runs at almost 13 hours of airtime a season, so it has a lot more time to kill.

I'm sure as the True Blood series goes on, it probably gets more original, but the main plots of both stories are pretty much the exact same (again, speaking only for the first season of True Blood). I don't know which book was written first, but somebody ripped somebody off.

EDIT: Reading a comment above, the True Blood books came first. Okay, so Meyers stole from True Blood, then.

Yeah, well, I was talking about a show as a whole, and I wouldn't say there is that many "good" actors on it. You can actually hear some of their accents go in and out while they're talking. As a story I just personally find it relatively predictable from the episodes that I watched (which are not many, as my roommate was the one into the show and not me).

Obviously my opinion is the minority, but it's still there, stomping it's feet, demanding higher quality television. Food for the sheep, I say.

Xaxsays...

Apparently, the show just keeps getting more and more popular. This show - an HBO show - is the most-watched TV show on Sundays, including the big networks. Pretty amazing.

Matthusays...

@Tymbrwulf What are some shows on t.v. you consider good shows?

For me, Dexter is the best show on t.v. and I think it has some of the best writing I've ever seen on t.v.

Also, breaking bad is pretty good too.

I know it's "popular" to say Dexter is a great show, but that doesn't make it untrue.

Also, you know why I think HBO and Showtime and AMC have better shows than the big networks? 'Cause the friggin' big networks put fucking NOTHING but reality t.v. I am SOOOOO fucking sick every damned night a dance show, or a talent show, or a singing show, or a cooking show, or a gameshow. EVERY GODDAMNED NIGHT.

I enjoyed Boston Public for a bit, I didn't watch it all the way through, but it was a good catch every now and then. But now? I can't think of a single good, well written drama on any of the big networks.

What do you say are good shows atm?

EDIT: Actually, House maybe. But even that has gotten stale and has gone downhill imo. Also, I reality thought the reality t.v. thing was a fad or a phase, something that would end soon, but no. It soldiers on, shamefully, night after night after night.

@Abel_Prisc
Yeah, some of the story of the first series is similar, but the way the stories are presented is totally different. Twilight is just a whiny teen story whereas True Blood is much more mature.
The second series with the Dionysus inspired storyline is altogether different from Twilight. We are now at the point in the series where Sookie's mind reading powers are about to be explained.

VoodooVsays...

This scene is awesome...but not quite as awesome as the "twisted" ending a few episodes ago

The difference between Twilight and True Blood is huge. Twilight takes itself so seriously. True Blood always has a little bit of tongue in cheek added to it. This clip is proof of that.

Like many of you, I'm sick of the whole Vampire craze Hollywood has been going through lately. But as I've been telling my friends when I try to encourage them to watch it. I describe the show as a "R-Rated Buffy the Vampire Slayer"

Buffy the Vampire Slayer may have had Vampires in it...but it really wasn't about Vampires, hell a lot of times it wasn't even about Buffy. It was just damned good fun.

Hush and Once More With Feeling spring to mind. Although, comparing True Blood and teh Whedon smacks of heresy.

Since the story is taken strait from a novel that was written about 7 years before the first Twilight novel, you must realize that it is Twilight that ripped off The Sookie Stackhouse Series, not vice versa. Whether the movie came out before the TV show began is irrelevant.

Abel_Priscsays...

Yeah, the very end of the post you referenced I came to the realization that it was Meyers who took from the Stackhouse novels. Pretty crazy how she blatantly took so much material and exploded with it.
