Toronto Police punch reporter in the face twice at G20

Another report from the G20, including some stern questions posed to Toronto's Chief of Police, Bill Blair. Very calm response from the cameraman given how he was treated.

The footage of people being trampled by the mounted unit is a bit sickening.

The Black Bloc

When they arrest a deaf person, and refuse to listen to reason, although I'm unsure of the reason a deaf person would be in a volatile place like that. The refusal to listen to reason is proof enough that they cannot be negotiated with. Perhaps the best step would be a class action lawsuit for millions of dollars in damages. The only way for policy makers to understand is to hit them where it hurts, the god-damned check book. In the US hitting them in the checkbook would mean hitting the Taxpayer too, perhaps that is what it would take to wake the Populi up.

OK so there's a massive dogpile of police arresting people while being pushed, shoved, and yelled at... and this reporter decides to run into them with a camera. BRILLIANT. Why would anyone do that, I wonder? Was it because if you throw yourself in a chaotic moment like that, there is a good chance you will be injured either on purpose or by mistake? Did he want to be injured so that he could post police hate all over the internet?

first off, the reporter was there before the police started arresting and shoving people. second, i can't believe you're advocating that the press should be intimidated by any sort of violence. that is the quickest and surest way to creating a police state.

I didn't advocate that press should be intimidated by violence. That's just something you assumed. I will say though, that he could have gotten a better view of the violence a few feet away. He jumped into the dogpile for a reason and it wasn't to get a better shot. If he wanted a good shot for reporting he would have stood back where he could get all of the action in view and less ambient noise.

Gee I wonder if this would happen if the Canadian people hadn't been disarmed by their government. They have no second amendment to insure that this kind of tyranny can be resisted. The police state (ala this video) now exists and the next thing to go is the freedom of speech..oh wait, that's gone too....grow a set my fellow Canadians and stand up to your government.

Wut?

a) Gun ownership is legal in Canada.

b) How would adding guns to those situations made it better?

Yes, this kind of tyranny would never be possible in the US, you are very wise.

I got tapes on everything, tapes that incriminate everyone involved. My tapes are so good, you'll imprison yourselves after viewing them.

Because short snap footage of chaos gives a clear view of everything that's happening.

So be aware of my awesome tapes.

On topic: I don't understand why people are making such a big deal about someone getting punched in the face. I've been punched before, and let me tell you it really isn't that big of a deal. It's more shocking than anything (unless you get punched on the jaw or the back of the head, then you are on your ass), and the police were obviously kinda busy doing shit when this smart ass reporter shoves a camera in their face. Maybe they just didn't have time to deal with him at that moment? It was becoming a riot... Anyways, I'm not saying that media is in the wrong, just that some people need to take the situation in to context before pushing all blame on the police. They are people too.

spoco2says...

@shogunkai : Oh you're so tough, you think being punched in the face is nothing... that does not diminish how wrong this is in any way. A police officer should NOT punch a reporter who is doing NOTHING but filming what is going on. PERIOD. So, it's ok that they punched him in the face, but maybe a kick to the groin would be too much? Where is your line.

Retarded.

And you can see with the horse video that he was already on the path and the horses rode over him.

Gotta love the people here standing up for this sort of shit behaviour.

However, I dislike the tone the video took in regards to the black bloc behaviour, that's just bullshit, that doesn't help anything or anyone. That's outright thuggish bullshit that shouldn't be condoned (which the video pretty much did).

shogunkaisays...

@spoco2: I didn't say what I said to mean that I was condoning the officer's behaviour. I was trying to show the reasoning the officer probably had at the time. Perhaps I could have expressed it better, but I didn't. The officer did NOT handle it very well, but in the context of the situation, when adrenaline is flowing, he did what he thought he had to. I don't know exactly what the officer was thinking though, just what I would have done in that situation.

Also, think about how many people were there. While the majority were peaceful, there were a few people who were violent. In a huge crowd, all it takes is a couple of people to act violently to turn it in to a mob.

About the horse clip, it's not like the horses just appeared out of nowhere, they had to come down the path. Watch him carefully. He was not walking down the path, he was walking toward the center of the path (look at how his leg crosses over the other), he was trying to get hit. Plus he wasn't trampled over. the cop moved out of the way. I bet if you could find the whole video, you would see that.
