This is your cat on drugs. (1957 USAF experiment with LSD)

This video shows an experiment in which a cat was dosed with LSD. The footage is from an experiment was run by the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, OH and was performed as part of the MKULTRA project. The clip is taken from "Thomas Pynchon: A Journey Into the Mind of TP" a 2001 movie-documentary by Donatello & Fosco Dubini.

I might be missing something here: why the hell was the USAF investigating LSD?

Think I'd agree with Goofball Jones, it looks like that poor moggy's been given a massive dose.

The fire of his righteous anger is what lights the BBQ pit over which baby kittens are hanging.

Why do you hate cute kittens, drforeverclear? Why?

I believe the USAF was at the time investigating different drugs for use on the battlefield with the purpose of incapacitating enemy troops. This is only one of the many experiments they performed. What you really should know about this is they gave lsd to unwitting soldiers in massive doses also. They also performed airborne dispersal of lsd over (i believe) San Francisco dosing unsuspecting citizens. They also experimented with different dispersal techniques in (again, if memory serves) NYC. Such as dropping powder filled lightbulbs into subway tunnels and measuring how far the powder travelled.

looris ... it's not so much that people pretend that bad things don't happen, because ignorance runs rampant at times, but watching videos that are cruel to harmless, defenseless, innocuous animals and children are in poor taste. we've discussed this issue before.

In reply to your comment:
drforeverclear is of the kind of people who likes more to pretend bad things do not happen.

LadyBug, I understand where you're coming from, but I can't say I agree. I don't have time to do an informative writeup, but I had to watch the full version of the USAF LSD experiments and then comment on the process and results. I certainly wasn't sifting this video for giggles, I was hoping to add some info, but I got distracted trolling drforeverclear. *sigh*. I had been hoping to make this more of an informative post, rather than something "for posterity" or "you need to see this" or whatnot.

To this end, I am posting a documentary about the Milgram experiment and others.

You can't dismiss this video just because it's terrible. It's showing what kind of research the government does do on people and animals just so they can win another war.

loorissays...

this is not supposed to be neither cute nor funny.

i hate what they did, too, and that's a valid reason to KEEP watching this.

every "bad taste"-like comment is a hit straight to whoever fights against experiments such as this.

i can understand the reasons for posting it, and i wish i could change my downvote now, not because i like the video, but because of the discussion and what looris said.
now that the tags have been removed i mean.

no worries. this video in particular does something to me though. i don't like it. it makes my skin crawl. perhaps this is because i am both a cat lover, and i used to use LSD on a constant basis, so i know what it's capable of. jeebus man... words can't even begin to explain how i feel. i need a time machine and set of boxing gloves.

lordnullsays...

Is it horrible? Yes. Is it something that should not have happened? I don't know, I havn't seen the entire documentary. Just to say that an experiment should not have been performed simply because the results are not pretty to watch is ignoring any potential benefits.

calvadossays...

It took me a few moments to decide to upvote this, but finally I decided that the "disturbing" aspect was outweighed by the "important record of human infamy" aspect (others have already said basically the same thing). This is not to say that I would upvote something like a video of some random jackasses in their basement dosing their cat with LSD, which would be nothing other than gratuitous cruelty.

But the fact that this video shows a twisted and apparently pointless experiment commissioned by the US military at the height of the Cold War makes it something of an historical document, a grotesque one.

They broke the cardinal rule-Thou shalt not dose, if the dosed, is unaware of the dose......"
