The Oceanmaker (or, my Animation adventure in Belize!)

My director and friend, Lucas Martell, the creator of Pigeon Impossible has a new short in the middle of production. The Oceanmaker. In November of last year I was lucky enough to be one of the eight people invited down to Caye Caulker, Belize to animate and take part in this "destination production" experiment (described in the video). It was one of the most magical experiences of my life!
If you think independent animation is important, if you think the short looks good so far and would like to see it finished, if you would just like to get more animators out of their basements and into the sun, please consider chipping in to the IndieGogo campaign.
Yours,
HenningKO

Hmmm... 9 minutes of animation (as awesome as it may be), the honor of helping pay for another trip to Belize (?) or somewhere, and a good feeling inside for supporting the arts and "helping us create a whole new way to make animation" (making use of sunny, sandy beaches, SPF-50, and 75° water, I guess).

I've contributed to several Kickstarters, and it's possible I'm not exactly the kind of person this is aimed at, but I can't be the only one seeing this and thinking, "REALLY?".

I hear you - and as this is a sponsorship, this might sound a little self-serving, but working in IT for many, many years - the idea of doing creative technical projects somewhere other than a cube farm in a windowless basement is very, very appealing to me personally. I would like this model to succeed because I would like to do something similar.

Well, there are rewards, like any other kickstarter. What else do you expect from one of these except to see it finished, and a good feeling inside?
The sunny sandy beaches and the adventure/camaraderie of Belize are just a novel way of paying the artists for their time. We did it instead of wages... and it ended up being cheaper. Win-win-win. So like Dag, I'm promoting this mostly 'cos I want the production model to be viable!

Sift of the week!

I don't normally do this with sponsored videos - but I want to for this one because:

A. The more of these kind of of quality sponsorships we have, the less we need to rely on the other kind of advertising (you know the kind).

B. The idea in this video aligns with my work ethic. Work on something great that you believe in, with like-minded people, just not in a carpet-cube wasteland. (where's my red swingline?®)

Thanks @dag!~
We'll get this thing finished eventually, even if the indieGogo doesn't reach its goal. At such time, I'll be happy to sponsor it (the complete film) again.

HenningKOsays...

I just got the call... animation (my part) is wrapped! Polished it off last night. Now two weeks more of effects, and then off to the races. By which I mean fests.

HenningKOsays...

Should've known that question was coming. Well, rest assured that I will post it here when I am allowed. I think film fest exclusivity agreements are bullshit, so I will be pushing our director to put it on the internet for free ASAP.
