Disney says The Lion King's similarities to a 1950s Japanese anime series called Kimba are total coincidence. You make the call.

The all powerful Disney!
Turn this around, imagine making a copy of a Disney cartoon - their lawyers would be all over it.
They, when the ones at fault, just sweep it under the rug. "Whata-ya-mean - purely coincidence!

Edit: though, it's not like the Chinese markets ever stole copyrighted material from the US...

Yup, probably stealing. But hell, Disney has been doing that for ages! You think they came up with the story to Little Mermaid or Aladdin?

But seriously, I'd have to watch Kimba to make a real evaluation. These may be surface similarities with a completely different story.

Definitely stealing. I guess Disney ran out of stories to pirate from the public domain.
