Nexxussays...From Wikipedia
Diesel engine runaway is a rare condition affecting diesel engines, where the engine goes out of control, consuming its own lubrication oil and running at higher and higher RPM until it overspeeds to a point where it destroys itself either due to mechanical failure or engine seizure through lack of lubrication. For instance, a 1800 rpm engine can run to 4000 or 5000 rpm or beyond.
Several ways to stop a runaway diesel engine are to block off the air intake, either physically using a cover or plug, or alternatively by directing a CO2 fire extinguisher into the air intake to smother the engine.[
Gutspillersays...The 1950s NOS.
rottenseedsays...Fuck yea...this is a truck....MERIKUH!
Paybacksays...Anyone else hoping the transmission jumped into gear?
Shepppardsays...Well, it's a good thing at least one of them knew what the hell to do.
And after re-watching, you can see the guy saying "it sucked it out of my hand, bout to suck my hand in, too" is a total liar. He tried to plug it twice, the second time he just let go and his rag fell on the floor. -_-
chingalerasays...I yelled, "Get Away!" to the screen when the thing began by going into over-rev, I have had 1st hand exp. with one, it is NOT easy to stop it once it starts-We put a book on top of the damn intake to starve it of air and it sucked it down and bent it, allowing air in through the sides....Had to take a wrench and bust the oil filter off, pressure dropped, finally got it stopped. Scary shit the controlled bomb that is, a diesel engine.

VidRothsays...I'd go to war with that old dude... that is a man who can keep his calm around a 30 year old bomb!
fritzo9602says..."*COUGH COUGH COUGH*...you think we should open a door or something?"
Shepppardsays...Also, there's no slow mo, time lapse, speed up or anything done to alter the actual video, so I'm gonna go ahead and say this doesn't belong in time shift

braschlosansays...Someone find the follow up video where they get it running properly
sickiosays...I have no idea about engines. Had no clue what he was doing when he put the wood over the air intake. I thought he was just throwing a bit of wood in the engine and hoping that would stop it.
Sniper007says...I wouldn't say he's a total liar. It is true it did not suck it in, but it is also true that the boy was terrified out of his mind. He probably honestly believed it got sucked in when he made that statement. Fear can do strange things to your memory. Also, it wasn't a rag. It was some kind of soft metal or plastic. You can see them tap it on the vehicle at 0:37. It looked like they knew full well that what happened was a possibility, and they were "prepared" for it. They just made poor choices for what (and who) should block the intake.

Sniper007says...Also, listen very carefully at 3:00. It's very hard to tell, but it sounds like the old man asks about the "plastic" something or other...
highdileehosays...Love it. Leave it to the old timer!
