Another clever Smarter Every Day entry.

I was watching one of those air crash investigation dramacutaries about the Lear Jet crash that killed Payne Stewart. The first action on the checklist for depressurisation was some troubleshooting. The pilots never got to action two, which was to put on their oxygen masks.

There was a programme about the death penalty hosted by Michael Portillo a few years back which pondered weather hypoxia was the more humane way of executing prisoners - it's weird that your brain can be in such a state of euphoria and intoxication when your survival depends on something as basic as correcting o2 levels.

I hate it when people don't pay attention to the safety instructions on planes. You can stop looking at your laptop or cellphone for a minute to learn what will save you life - AND MINE - if something goes wrong.

They also ought to include "In the event of an emergency landing, LEAVE YOUR FUCKING CARRY-ON BEHIND AND GET OFF THE PLANE, ASSHOLE."

These things always interest me, because I have such a high form of self health anxiety that I am constantly analyzing myself. I see this, and it is the same with diabetics who are functional but unaware anything is wrong when going into low sugar shock, and I cannot imagine this ever happening to me. If the slightest thing was off, my brain would be all over myself.

I don't drink much because of this, if I get even a little drunk my brain starts spending an enormous amount of concentration to correct for the impairment. Its for the best I guess.

Except to me it looked like Destin's eyed showed a lot of pure terror but he simply could not put the mask back on. His mouth looks to be grinning involuntary but even as the looming death approaches, you can see the smile drops at @8:28.

It may still be more humane but I don't think it looks that peaceful.
