Only he didn't actually fix it, creative accounting and some nice law changes made billions in debt 'disappear' for a while. California is still broke and if they are the top job creation state, why are tons of Californians moving to Texas? I can't throw a rock without hitting a Californian that just moved to Austin for a new job.

Hmmm. Wasn't Maher one of the people piling on John McCain in 2008, when *he* was 72?

To be fair, that was mostly because McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate, which would have put her 1 step away from the White House if anything happened to him. But still, a big deal was made of his age at the time ... so you can't exactly claim that this is some new wave of ageism.

I'd personally be fine with a 72+ year old president... But on the other hand, the parties are going to swing for whoever they think is the most electable, and since a disturbing proportion of people just vote for whoever they think looks the best, they kinda have to pander to that demographic a bit. And that's going to put some pressure on the "old and wise" in favor of the "young and good looking", whether we agree with it or not.

of course, we may also ignore that mental prowess is inextricably linked to the physical being.
there's a reason why older people tend to be much more conservative, narrow viewed, and easy to emotionally manipulate. it's called physical decline.

There are of course rather large benefits to experience, but experience is still just one factor in the whole.

still, what is at issue here is not necessarily "age" or "age-ism" - it's our fascination with appearance... - it's more the fact that jerry brown is butt-ugly and has no hair. he will thus lose a presidential election based heavily upon the marketing of a candidate. Since Ike and TV, we haven't had a bald president. period.

So very true. The Cosmetic industry is making an absolute killing on butt implants, and it's not just the 20-something crowd. It's the 30 & 40'something people getting tuns of work done so they aren't pushed out of their field.

Hey 20'something guy at Silicon Valley who thinks anyone over 30 is useless. I personally had a hand in developing some of the tech you are using now. You 'really' think you are better at it than I am just because you're in your 20's and I'm in the my 40's? Guess what. The answer to that is 'no'.
