Rage gameplay demo (e3 2010)

Looks cool...but why can't game companies stop copying each other with the freakin' location/storylines? This game sounds exactly like Fallout (1,2 or 3) and Borderlands combined. I'm getting tired of tromping through "post-apocalyptic wastelands" and would rather play in a different locale for once this decade.

One of the things that bothered me about Fallout was how slow the combat was. Dug the concept of the huge world, numerous quests, RPG elements of upgrading gear, etc...but the "action" dragged it out painfully so. I'd like to have seen a combat system like this involved in Fallout.

The gaming industry is a gargantuan bandwagon train, almost to the same extent as the movie industry. A while ago the fad was WWII shooters, then it was sandbox games, particularly GTA-style (think Saints Row, Just Cause, Prototype, Infamous ...), now you could say it's arcadey modern day shooters (MW2, Medal of Honor), and post-apocalyptic games (Fallout, Borderlands, Rage). Here's hoping after Deus Ex 3 comes out, it will be cyberpunk.

Looks cool...but why can't comment writers stop copying each other with the freakin' self refferential post format? This comment sounds exactly like Jaaces and teebeenz' combined. I'm getting tired of reading through these ironical templates and would rather enjoy a different meme for once in this half of a day.

Thank god they made a wasteland big enough for some adventurin', but not so big us console players would get lost. I kept getting lost in Oblivion! I'm lost now, and I'm home! Help me, id!

Love the auto-aim/lock-on on the vehicle gun! Aiming is hard, too! Shit, I wish these damn gamepads had only one or two buttons! Trying to remember which button does what makes the game feel like a PC game (ewww!). I think PC gamers are just control snobs with all their KEYS and stuff. You need a goddamn GED to remember all that crap! Nooo, thank you!

Friesiansays...

I got about 40 seconds in and noticed that Tim Willits said that they've taken this genre to the next level with the addition of vehicle combat! If only I could have had vehicle combat in Half Life 2, oh no, I mean CoD4:MW2, no, hang on, I mean Far Cry 2, or was it Crysis, DAMMIT, it was Borderlands, I'm sure of it!!...

But, at least they have all new characters, I mean, I would have hated it if they used the same characters as they did in... well... 'RAGE 0: The Prequel' I guess.

Having said that, it does look pretty!

Xaxsays...

I was pretty underwhelmed... I don't know, it's just dripping with "been there, done that." I'm not sure they would've chosen to make this game had Borderlands come out before they began.

mgittlesays...

goddamnit, this is getting me riled up again...FOV 50 is fun for sure.

Even the mighty id has been forced to jump on the console as their main product, demoing their game at e3 on a friggin xbox. I'm sure I've missed some earlier example of them selling out, but this is the first I've paid attention because IMO id hasn't made anything cool since Quake III.

The number of restrictions placed on games because of console hardware is incredible.

They have only made one game since quake 3 and that was Doom 3 which I appreciated very much. They have been working on this for at least 3 years so the new Fallout and Borderlands were a coincidence (all influenced by the same culture). The thing about ID games is how the gameplay feels and they haven't let me down yet. As for taking things to another level he wasn't referring to just the vehicles, more like the complete package. Every square inch and character can be uniquely textured, great ID gameplay with RPG and exploring elements. Dynamic animation and AI that understands its environment so the AI characters can and will go whatever it seems they should be able to go... Plus this desert wasteland bit is just a small part of the first half of the game and there should be a fair amount of variation of scenery for those of you freaking out about that. The game just feels more alive than other games with similar level of graphics... Something about their artists and engine I suppose.

I didn't sit through the whole video - is this a borderlands mod? It looks like one.

And after reading the first post where fallout 1 and 2 were name dropped (there is no fallout 3, it's not a fallout game, i refute it), it made me think:

Why in the hell don't they forget all the fancy 3d "oblivion with different models/skins" first person real time bullshit and just make a PROPER fallout 3. It can be isometric, it can be turn based, spice it up with some modern graphical tweaks and improvements and slap it on a CD. Because i assure you i would pay £100 for that if it was a REAL fallout game.

Edit:
RE: the console debate. Man you nailed it - why the fuck are they limiting themselves so hard by making console games which they then port to the PC? The pc is the higher authority here, better at everything. Make it for the PC then downgrade it for the console, don't make it for the console and try to swindle PC users by charging the same price for a shit product.

Console gamers are USED to being served shit, and PC gamers are used to the best. So while console gamers lap this up, PC gamers will be left wondering why they just payed £40 for a product that, from a PC perspective, is worth about £20. So over-inflation of low quality PC games either bring down the quality of native PC games or bring up the average price of native PC games.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how piracy becomes prolific. Personally i never have, but i could throw a stone at my university and hit 7 people with the same stone who would tell you "i only do it to try out the game, if it's good i buy it, but i'm sick of being cheated out of my money"

When demos of games don't exist and the majority of previews come from sites like IGN and gamespot...AND don't say anything negative about games, can you really blame people for wanting to try before they spend $50+? Everyone's been burned at some point by buying some shit ass console port made by a company that used to make fantastic stuff. For example, Lucasarts made X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and the Dark Forces series for PC, but also made The Force Unleashed, which is one of the worst pieces of saleable software ever made and one of the worst console to PC ports to date. There was no demo.

Since when is demanding a decent product a "sense of entitlement" for a consumer?

arghnesssays...

While I know that Bioshock didn't invent the "electrocute people in water" idea (it was in Quake with the lightning gun and that probably wasn't the first, either), that effect and the implementation looked practically identical to Bioshock.

Floodsays...

Here is what I expect. I expect to buy it. I expect the graphics and tech will be excellent. I expect the gameplay and controls to be rock solid. And I expect the story will be crap but the game will be fun anyways. In other words, I don't expect id software to have changed much.

Deanosays...

It isn't, but that's not what we're talking about and certainly not what I was referring to as you know.

re crappy Star Wars products. I thought these had a long history of being rubbish. But clearly there are many who disagree and actually buy them. If you think otherwise don't buy them - I don't.

Funny you should say that. I don't accept Oblivion as an Elder Scrolls game. Not after Morrowind.

AnimalsForCrackerssays...

The main thing I'm concerned with is the AI in this game. id really gave a false impression with the AI behaviors in Doom 3 before it was released. I blame that Alpha build which had imps far more aggressive and scary than in the final product, Trent Reznor on sounds/ambiance enhanced this tension greatly; I was saddened when he was taken off the project. Really hoping they innovate in this area this time around. AI in first-person games has barely evolved since Half-Life or Halo 1 if you prefer that, F.E.A.R. being one of the fairly recent (4-5 years old recent) exceptions.

Also, wtf on no dedicated servers id? This isn't like you guys. We're worried about you, id!

dannym3141says...

@Deano - people feel that when they pay good money for a product, they are entitled to a good product. If you paid a lot of money for a car, and the car was shit, you'd return the car. In a lot of situations you aren't allowed to do that with games - i've been refused many times because my game has an online component. Of course, i never used the online component but they don't believe that story and why should they?

We can't even rely on big games reviewers to be honest about the games they review because they're either taking fucking bungs from games companies or they're so used to shit games that they think everything is 5 out of 5, and unless you think that every big game released from every big company is a perfect 5 stars out of 5, you can't really argue with that.

I would never say "if you're not happy with something, steal it!" But i can completely understand why people would, especially when you back them into a corner where you're forcing them to gamble on a game - oh you don't like that pitiful excuse for a game that was voted 5 out of 5 by all top reviewers? Too bad, no refund.

I wouldn't be so quick to tow the corporate line though dude, if you take a deep look at music downloads (illegal and otherwise), the jury is STILL out on whether illegally downloading music helps or hinders sales. When 'industry' says "We've lost 10 million this year on illegal downloads (((" they are making the assumption that every person who downloaded something would have bought it if they'd not been able to download it. And you simply can't assume that, there's no evidence for it. But there are people who downloaded it, liked it, bought it - and that IS provable.

@Ryjkyj - i agree with you on that one, i thought oblivion was balls. I never got into morrowind because i felt it didn't give me enough direction/motivation to go and do things (play it), but i do know that it was a well made game even if i didn't like that single aspect.

@Deano What is it you were referring to, then? I wasn't intentionally misunderstanding you to make a point...

If you'd like to further educate yourself on the issue rather than just make rhetorical "I've never understood" type statements, go ahead and read that article and some of the comments. Specifically the parts about the purpose of copyright law in the Constitution.

I'm not a fan of the setting but I suspect the game will be fun anyway. The engine is what really impresses me, though. I can't wait to see what other companies do with it and I'm really hoping TES5 will use it.

The thing I find funny is watching this guy play EXACTLY the same portions with X number of different game sites. Must be a friggen drain after a while.

I love the look of the game, and I have no bloody issue with 'oh it looks like game X/Y/X', so friggen what? There's only so many bloody settings overall that make for good gaming experiences. They look like they've gone to some great effort with the art design and overall 'feel' of the game, so I for one will be very much looking forward to this one.
