Modern Marvels: Cigarettes

Think that's tobacco you're smoking? About 50% of each cigarette isn't.

I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooo glad I quit... *cring*

I haven't smoked for 2 years, 10 months and 4 days, saving 20,785.44 cigarettes and $4,021.98. Yes I have something calculating this fact.

I wonder how much 'healthier' hand rolled cigarettes are? The same processes could go on in the manufacture of pouch tobacco, though it does look a lot more natural than filter cigarette tobacco.
American Spirit is supposed to be completely additive free. Though the cancer risks seem to be the same.

Other research suggests that stopping smoking before you're 40 (and surviving another 15 years) almost reduces your risk of cancer to that of the normal population.

There are more Chinese smokers than US citizens yet Philip-Morris is the largest cigarette manufacturer in the world. Does that mean that the relatively tiny number of US smokers just smoke 100 times as much as the Chinese?

Hmm. How's the math work out on that?

Philip Morris, like all the big tobacco manufacturers, have increased their marketing efforts in the developing world (read China and the rest of East Asia as well as the Indian sub-continent) as their sales have dwindled in America and Europe. Seems like a fair trade if you ask me- China sends us most of our manufactured consumer products, and we export death to them in return.

I've smoked a pack a day since I was fifteen years old. Accounting for inflation and tax increases I figure I've spent about $22,000. This was very informative but I'm still going to go have a cigarette when I finish writing this.

The 160 kg, chain-smoking, alcoholic guys who like to ride their motorcycle without a helmet are more likely to make a withdrawal from the plan. It's a dilemma for every health care system. Sin taxes?

Just curious.

I agree with qm's libertarian principle, but qm is a neo-con and not a libertarian, so something tells me that when asked about legalizing ALL drugs under the same pretense, he would be quick to withdraw that statement.

Check out this vid by Penn Jillette where he quotes European health statistics that found that people who live longer cost the system more money, people who die from lifestyle diseases cost more for a short time, but since they die earlier their lifetime cost is less. here

There is no question that an aging population puts strain on health-care resources. However, prevalence of tobacco related chronic disease in the elderly, including malignancy, emphysema, and coronary artery disease, would likely negate health care savings due to premature death. For a CDC analysis of the issue, go to;
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5114a2.htm
According to the Center for Disease control, smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.(440,000 premature deaths in the U.S. from 1995-99), and is estimated to have cost $157 billion dollars in economic losses.

I am a supporter of national health care.

From: http://www.taxfoundation.org/news/show/22477.html

"Conclusion: Cigarettes should be taxed according to the negative external costs they impose on society, and nothing more or less. However, nearly all studies conclude that the current federal tax rate of "39" cents raises enough revenue to offset those costs."

I pay $1.50 for NY state taxes alone...
