Maddow- Why Daylight Saving Time?

Maddow "The reasons that most of us think we have daylight savings time are generally all bunk."
spoco2says...

Did I miss it, or did they not say the reason why we really have it?

We have it because otherwise it's friggen light at 5am in the morning, if we didn't have daylight saving time it'd be light stupidly early during summer... and then if we left it like that through winter it'd be stupidly dark when you got up.

It's purely just managing the light hours at the start of the day better for sleeping.

It's not hard to comprehend.

Have to Agree with Spoco2 here....
I never thought it had anything to do with any of these myths... Always thought it was so in Summer we had more light at night and less in the morning.

Better sleep sounds like a good reason to have it.

I'm not going to rewatch, but I believe she said she likes it because she sleeps late, not because it allows her to sleep later. I share her sentiment. I start work later than most, so I love DST because it adds an hour of sunlight to my day.>> ^xxovercastxx:
I think I counted 3x that Maddow says she likes DST because she gets to sleep later. Apparently she didn't put much thought into this report -- you get up an hour earlier during DST.

Personally I think it's all daft. We have circadian rhythms that have been honed by nature over millions of years, and habits that most comfortably match it. We don't need Mr. Franklin coming along and telling us we're all idiots for not getting to sleep at 9PM and waking up at 5AM. Then creating a law to force us to sleep the way he does. If he were on a more sensibly denominated bill I would tear one up in rage.

And I suspect Ms. Maddow is truly confused. DST means you are forced to go to sleep earlier, and get up earlier. If you like staying up late, you're being screwed. I think what she likes is really just the longer days that come with summer. And somehow thinks that messing with the clocks is what causes that.

people seem to be forgetting.. Daylight Savings Time goes two ways. In the fall, you roll your clocks backward at 3 A.M. (meaning, you technically go from 2 A.M. to.. 2 A.M.) Gaining an hour of sleep.

In the Spring, we skip 3 A.M. entirely, and go from 2:59 to 4:00 A.M. thereby losing an hour of sleep.

I didn't even bother to watch the video, the comments have it right.. but backwards, we roll back in fall so that during winter we have extended daylight hours, and in the spring we put the clocks forward for the same effect, thereby giving people (on the normal sleeping schedule, I.e. getting up before noon) the longest amount of daylight to do their work
