My wife told me that she thinks I like Louie C.K. so much because he and I have the same sense of humor. I think that is the nicest thing she has said to me in eight years of marriage.

I was just going through his Reddit answers thinking I was a lot like Louis CK too. I think he just speaks to a large swath of people across the varying ages. He just sort of gets us.

Man, I just laughed out loud from his bit then about the bus boy... that's a joke he's only just starting on for his next year of material, and it's already showing he has not lost it yet.

I was listening to Marc Maron interviewing Chris Rock the other day, and in that they mention Louis, and talk about his throwing out his act each year and were all like 'Woah man, just slow down, chill out, you're doing too much'.

And I think that's why he's at the top. Because he does not think it's too much, because he's made that deal with himself, he's fucking stuck to it, and it is seriously reaping rewards. It's the thing which stops him getting stale. The worst thing for a comedian, for me, is when I see them do the same bit over and over. It destroys that illusion that they're just making it up there on the spot, which is what all great comedians seem like they're doing. It's only when you see them do the act a few times that you realise that all those inflections, the little asides, the 'mistakes' etc., they're all part of a well honed act. If you don't see the act over and over then you can maintain the illusion for yourself.

That's why I'm still very much into Louis.

I bought and watched Live at the Beacon on Monday and it was hilarious. $5 well spent.

It probably is.
and she probably loves you because it probably isn't true. >> ^Hive13:

C.K. himself talks about learning to throw out his act each year from George Carlin who, at the time, was his comedy hero. C.K., too, thought that it was incredible, but he soon realized that it's the only way to keep it fresh and stay alive creatively.

@Trancecoach, yeah, I know he got it from Carlin. Most people would look at that as an idea, and think it was pretty good, and then maybe try it and give up because it's hard work. Comedians generally like to be able to reuse their material, because it's hard to create, so they want to get the most out of it.

So huge props to him for taking that as an idea from George, but actually enacting it, and sticking with it.

Deanosays...

I think Louis CK is a great guy and very likeable. And I've always enjoyed the clips of him here. But when I see him in an extended set, like the Beacon one (which I bought), I'm not as impressed. At times he was utterly killing, then the energy levels just went and the material seemed to weaken. Overall he doesn't quite do it as a top tier comic for me.

However I'm going to watch the live Beacon show again and see if it changes my mind. Certainly damn good value for $5 and I hope it's a huge success.

Louis CK from Reddit:

This special, if it explosed, cause really it's only been up for 2 days, more like a pre-sale. If it really tears an asshole into the money monster who then shits dollars into my mouth (oh my god what's wrong with me) then I will use that money to buy a home and get some security which i NEVER have had in my life and have certainly not gotten from my low budget show.

Fuck. How can you not support that with $5?

kymbossays...

Man, people are gonna hate me for not jumping on the Louis train, but I paid $80 to see him here in Melbourne (which on the current exchange rate is like $481,973 in US dollars). He was great, and it was money well spent, but if he hasn't achieved any financial security from his act yet, I'm not sure it's the industry's fault.

I hear that Dane Cook is a funny guy.

He turned down a shit load of money to make his own show. He has said that the only way he could keep creative control was to turn down the big bucks. He took a much, much lower offer so that he could write, direct, produce, cast, act in, and edit his own show.

If you paid $80 dollars to see him he probably made 50 cents off of it.
That's the industry's fault.
(But, I don't hate you--well, not for this anyway)

kymbossays...

Appreciate the response, BL - have you got any reference to the 50c per $80 ticket? Because I find it hard to believe.

It's an awesome experiment, and I hope he makes a killing. It looks like a huge success, and I'm fascinated by the discussion about piracy that it's spawned.

Um, no. I don't have a reference to the "probably 50 cents."

Me too! There's no way they would actually pay him this much.

longdesays...

I don't get how CK turning down a middle man to publish and promote his product could result in him keeping less money. Was he simply not able to generate enough demand?

It seems like he would make more money and a higher margin per download or ticket this way.

nach0ssays...

There's a great CK interview that he just did on NPR's Fresh Air. He talks about the show (he's already made his money back and then some) and Dane Cook.

I immediately bought it, honestly not expecting to laugh as much as I did. I'm talking deep, cathartic laughter. He's great.

Truth. Honest. Those words keep popping up. It is why I love him. A racist joke isn't funny because it isn't true. Talking about the word "nigger" can be done truthfully.
