Letterman Responds to Palin Outrage

Letterman responds!
HollywoodBobsays...

This further reinforces my theory that Republicans lack any semblance of a sense of humour.

Bristol, the daughter of a staunch anti-sex-ed, pro-abstinence politician, was knocked up as a minor, but rather than throw the baby daddy under the bus they tried to turn them into the poster children for the anti-abortion movement. We all saw how long that lasted. As soon as the secret service detail unchained him, Levi ran for the hills!

Palin is an idiot, and a prime example of her own failed ideologies, and she made every member of her family fair game for anything that the world wants to throw at them.

And it wasn't a rape joke because Dave said it was A-Rod, it would have been a rape joke if he had said she'd been impregnated by Kobe.

"The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show," said Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton. "Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman."

Uh yeah, who's speaking in poor taste now, you hypocritical pieces of shit? If they didn't want to give Letterman a ratings boost, they probably shouldn't have run crying to the media and feigned horror and indignation in the first place.

I doubt the Palin family thinks that far ahead.

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

Letterman started off saying something to the effect that he noticed that Palin had perfected her 'slutty flight attendant' look. Then he said Palin's daughter was 'knocked up' by Arod during a Yankee's game. It's a good example of neolib double-standard on treatment of others.

Chelsea Clinton and Obama's kids are appropriately off-limits. But neolibs are OK joking about raping kids as long as they're a Republican's. Imagine the horror if Dave had said, "But there was an awkward moment for Arod beat up Obama's daughters..." or "Clinton had an awkward moment when Arod knocked up Chelsea and realized it meant both he and Arod sleep with ugly chicks..."

Letterman hasn't been funny for years, and I guess he's decided that if he can't be funny he might as well be controversial. Letterman can say whatever he wants as far as I'm concerned. If he wants to joke about raping or killing Republican kids then go right ahead. At least he's open about it. Those who find such things funny merely are aligned in the lock-step zombie group-think that is the modern neolib. Neolibs are bitter, angry, spiteful, mean people who find the mistreatment of children funny as long as it they are kids of people they don't like.

Wave that banner Dave!

Winstonfield_Pennypackersays...

Right, because no right wing radio nut job ever said anything offensive about Chelsea

I'm sure some did. And if they want to display their stripes that way then go ahead, I say. It makes it easy to see who the haters are. But don't try to sling hate and then pretend that it isn't. I loathe people who do some jackass thing and then try and wave it off saying, "It's only a joke..." And I have nothing but contempt for people who get mad at ONE guy for being a jackass, and then laugh at another guy for being a worse jackass.

Again - it is the thing that sets me apart from the typical Videosifter I guess. I'm not a hypocrite. I'm not going to cheer some jackass conservative who makes fun of a liberal's kids any more than I'd cheer a jackass neolib who makes fun of a conservative's kids.

Maybe if they did stupid shit like Bristol or the Bush twins they would be more easy to make fun of.

Sotto_Vocesays...

The jokes were kind of douchey, and I wish Letterman had given a slightly less disingenuous apology. I believe that he intended the A-Rod joke to be about Bristol, but the fact of the matter is that 14-year-old Willow was the one who went to the game, so it's understandable that the Palins would construe it as an attack on her. It was Letterman's fuck-up and he should have acknowledged it instead of making it seem as if the Palins had arbitrarily decided to interpret the joke as if it were about Willow.

But the fact remains this is a late-night comedian making a tasteless (and, even worse, unfunny) joke, and I can't really get too worked up about that. Call me when you hear a similar joke from a Democratic presidential nominee ("Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." - John McCain) or the presumptive head of the Democratic party (Rush Limbaugh talking about Chelsea Clinton while displaying a picture of the White House dog).

StukaFoxsays...

Didn't Palin pull this fake outrage shit during the campaign? Meanwhile, she wasted no opportunity to stir up the Brownshirts at her rallies with rhetoric ten times uglier than the supposed insult that Letterman never said or implied.

I've seen smarter things than Palin thrown back over the rail on The Deadliest Catch.

Derelictsays...

I have to disagree with you Sotto, Letterman didn't fuck up. The joke was aimed at the general population, not at the Palins and as such the vast majority of us assumed that "daughter" meant the knocked up one, not some random other child of theirs that most of us have never heard of. In light of how jokes are constructed there is no surprise that he didn't allude to the fact that it was the 14 year old at the game...we don't care and as a comedian he isn't there to fact check his jokes, he is there to entertain. As entertainment, reveling in the hipocrisy that is the Palin family is pretty terrific, if I do say so myself.

You'll have to clarify which of your imaginary universes this figment took place in.

the vast majority of us assumed that "daughter" meant the knocked up one, not some random other child of theirs that most of us have never heard of

Which makes insulting women, females, and children with jokes about assault and rape perfectly OK. Glad you clarified that. :eyeroll:

And that pretty much says it iall. Neolib hypocrisy & ugliness isn't pretty, but at least you're open about it.

McCain...Limbaugh

Any such commentary by someone about children is a jackass who should apoligize in sackcloth and ashes for being a stupid idiot, a fool, and a mean SOB.

Awww how cute. You've all invented another silly political group that doesn't actually exist!

You can stick "neo" in front of anything and instantly call it something to hate... This is just a scapegoat to give you something other than the real issues to be mad at. Whats next? Neocommunists? Neolibertarians? Liberal isn't even a well defined political term. Does everyone really think the same thing when someone says "liberal" or even "conservative" for that matter? I seriously doubt it.

Imus constantly made fun of black and other ethnic groups on his show. He was fired for making fun a ladies basketball team for their ethnic features.

David Letterman, by contrast, is not making fun of Palin because she is a redneck alaskan; he's making fun of her because she is an ignorant hypocrite. Her foibles are all due to her individual choices.

robdotsays...

first of all, david is a joke teller. hes not pretending to be a commentator,or journalist or anything else. rush limbaugh actually put up a picture of chelsea clinton and said the whitehouse has a new dog. anyone republicans wanna comment on that? no,probly not. PALIN puts her kids out there. she put her daughters on the campiagn trail.THE PALINS keep the kids names in the news. SHE keeps the issue going.
SHE is expoiting her kids for political gain. all she has to do is ignore it. rise above it. but i guess that wont happen. what she should do is say,i find his humour distasteful, now lets discuss healthcare. but she cant, since she has no answers for healthcare any other issues that confront us. shes become a tabloid joke. like all republicans.

I don't think anybody was laughing at the jokes, these are time filler throw away lines. What people are laughing at is the massive whine fest the Palins started.

When Sarah decided to use her daughter to make a political point about the sexual activity, and moral/legal choices of minors, she put her on the public stage, Bristol jokes are totally in bounds. More to the point these jokes focused not on Bristol, but on Spitzer and ARod. Saying she got knocked up, which Bristol did, does not in any way imply she was raped, thats just a Palin whine-fest construction.

I'm not a hypocrite.

In Internet discussions where everything can be text searched you would be better off not making claims which are demonstrably false.

entr0pysays...

Of course I would agree that they blew it out of proportion. And it's not Sara Palin or her husband that I have any sympathy for.

But her daughter is a different story, it's not her fault she has such a famous and obnoxious mom. And honestly I think she can be forgiven for making a naive mistake when she was 14. I know I could have been easily seduced at 14, I was overly trusting and way too eager to be liked. Come to think of it, that's common, and it's exactly why we have statutory rape laws.

My point is, the girl doesn't deserve to be made fun of and called a slut for the rest of her life, and on television no less. I'm sure she experienced more then enough humiliation in middle school.

Jaacesays...

There should be a test that new Sifter's need to pass to make sure they aren't right-wing nutters without a thought-process (I can appreciate the ones that have a semblance of one at least). I get tired of seeing how they make new names just to post their jackass comments on good Sifts.
