The software/hardware behind this visual beauty must be staggering. During a couple of those I am pretty sure each particle is being lighted, and directionally (meaning the particles are leaving shadows on their dark sides). The amount of time it took to render this must have been astronomical.

Yeah, the lighting is the star here. As overcast's link states, the particle simulation (the motion) is done by Realflow which is a couple years old, and Krakatoa is a fast, extremely pretty way to render them.
