As much as I enjoyed that, am I the only one who was surprised by the students' "level"? I can't say I understand what someone has to do to get into Harvard but considering it has such a reputation I'd expect the students would be capable of better rhetoric...

You saw them remember the names of all the people on the lifeboat, and add up how many days they were on it. They were taking notes on his speech about philosophy telling us what we already know, probably with lots of underlines and highlighting. They've got the qualities it takes to succeed at university, of which useful independent reasoning may not be one.
