I'm not sure how to classify this. Is this just the only two people the reporter managed to find who live like this? Is this a social phenomena of a deeply conformist culture unable to handle these human beings? Is this a psychiatric phenomena (to be an amateur psychologist---the first guy seems like he might on the autistic spectrum a touch; the lady seems like she has a bit of post traumatic stress disorder and attachment disorder from a bad family situation)
But they way they are surviving alone but not happy seems really sad.
The non-exactly-the-same American analogue exists, I'm sure.
But for me, this was a unique take on the total sense of aloneness of being while surrounded, literally, by others. Which I think I remember is existentialist.

SFOGuysays...She seems to be working at a massage parlor ---they would have showers. Him? I have no idea.

mrsmitersays...I feel like this is the equivalent of people who live in their car in America. People who's work is enough to feed them but not to house them. I live in the heart of Silicon valley when I go out at night I inevitably see car after car with someone sleeping in it, and the back seat filled with what I can only imagine is their only earthly possessions.
There are so many people living like this even in one of the richest places in the US, I can only imagine what it's like in areas with a lower concentration of wealth.
