How Advertisers Failed Women in 2012

A10anissays...

Seriously, both sexes like looking at beautiful woman. If you happen to not enjoy it, then I feel sorry for you. Sex sells, it will always sell -unless the puritans have their way. Ok, let's have fat ugly woman in tweed suits in adverts, that'll work..NOT. Incidentally, my daughter is a model. She enjoys it, makes plenty of money and knows it will not last (age, cellulite etc). Does she feel demeaned or exploited? Absolutely not.

Sepacoresays...

Victoria Secret shows attractive women in underwear, how dare they!

More seriously, there's a fair bit of stupid behind this.

When was it decided that advertisers were working for the preference of a specific group of women while disregarding the opinions of other women.. and how do you fail something if you didn't even try?

I didn't try to do a back-flip, does that mean I failed to do a back-flip?

Now, if I find out the advertisers didn't make money or generate any sales, then I'll agree that they failed.. but they still didn't fail women.

UsesProzacsays...

I've never been one of the "ideals" of women, especially those presented here. Growing up, it hurt. Still hurts, sometimes. I'm five feet tall, I've always been muscular and squat. I was athletic in my teens which only compounded that musculature. I had a child with the predictable changes to my body. I never felt beautiful, how could I? Beauty is harshly defined for me, in almost every advert. If I don't look like what's being shown, I'm not worthy of wearing lingerie, being considered sexy or parading in front of a screen where others can see me.

I'm tired of seeing perfect, airbrushed specimens. I want to see someone I can relate to.

I have no problem with using sex to sell. Hey, it works. It gets our attention. The problem I have with "objectifying" women (and men) in advertisement these days, as @UsesProzac says, they're not real people. Airbrushed, photoshoped freaks of humans. It's become so ridiculous that it'd be comical if it wasn't so pathetic.

Hmm, how does one attract someone with something that is unattractive?

Perhaps by associating it with something that's attractive!

If you don't like it, don't buy it. You vote with your dollars. Boycott all the companies listed in this video (and those that follow suit), but don't expect it to have much effect.

We are motivated to buy what attracts us.

Which will arrive sooner?

1. Advertising stops using sex appeal to get viewers' attention.

or

2. Next-generation stem cell treatments can make us all beautiful.

I'd predict [never] for the former, and 2025-2080 for the latter (depending on how you define it).

I totally can't wait for my brain titties!

for me, only a few of these images felt offensive and degrading. But, the flip side of this is that there is plenty fo advertising that demeans men in similar (sex-sells) ways, or different (men as stupid / incompetent) ways. As for UsesProzac, there are plenty of short athletic women who feel attractive and know that they are sexy, regardless of the advertising stereotypes that are thrust at them. We are all sexy to someone...
