How Many Times Have You Been Spanked? Busted!

A news anchor gets asked a general question and answers in a more than intended personal way.

My favorite Freudian Slip joke:

A guy was talking to another guy and asks: "Do you know what a Freudian Slip is?"

"Yeah, I had one the other day."

"Really? What happened?"

"Well, I was sitting at the breakfast table with my wife and I meant to say 'Could you please pass the sugar?' but instead I said 'You ruined my life you fucking bitch!'"

T-mansays...

Thanks for the tip, persephone - but I'm not sure why women would be offended by that joke. It's not about women. Make the people talking women and change "bitch" to some male-oriented curse word and it's the same joke.

I'm assuming you are a women and were offended. Why?

Thylansays...

To me, it wasn't funny primarily for attempting to substitute shock, and surprise, forcefully conveyed, for actual humor. Laughter can often be a relief/release response, automatically done when something perceived as a threat, proves not to be. This isn't true humor.

The context of threat, once the humor is discounted, leaves it as a jarring and upleasent comment.

Tastes in humor vary wildly though.

MaxWildersays...

Thylan, what are you talking about? That was a really funny bit of dialog. What you say about laughter being a relief/release response is true, but really doesn't apply here.

It's not even a true Freudian slip, she was just repeating part of the question as a conversational tactic to give herself time to construct her answer, but the two together implied something quite different. There's no perceived threat.

Sorry about overanalysing guys, just confused about that comment.

T-man, this joke is old. I've seen it a dozen times. The fact that I've seen it so much makes me think it strikes a cord with people, that for many people it holds a grain of truth. To me, the underlying message is that wives ruin men's lives, more so than the Freudian slip part.(because it sounds nothing like a slip, agreed?) Maybe that's my skewed perception of the joke, but that's the message of many wife-jokes. As a wife, I find it offensive. Next time you wish to share a joke, try to consider that if it's railing against women/wives in any way, there IS a chance you could offend someone.

Lithicsays...

Have to say I disagree with you persephone, even though I agree with you at large about wife-jokes. There seems to be a general opinion that a mans freedom and life is hampered by marriage, a conception that I think has to do with classic gender roles at large. But it is also the reason that I disagree with you about the joke being offensive and that T-man should exercise more self-censoring when posting about women/wives (which in turn is a pretty offensive concept to me).

In the end this joke really makes no comment about women/wives in general, just about this couples specific relationship and by your own admittance it is your own reading of the joke coupled you’re your own situation and your own interpretation of the current social climate and other wife jokes that make it offensive to YOU. Frankly that seems to narrow the field of the people who would take offence at it very considerably.

Obviously (as you say) this joke strikes a cord with people, and judging by the up-vote a lot more people find its value then find it offensive. It’s likely to assume that people find it funny/enlightening/whatever precisely because it makes a comment about current social views as amounts to marriage and gender roles, even if they don’t put that analysis into it themselves and just find it funny because they relate to it or find the stereotypes amusing.

I didn’t really find it amusing either but in the end his freedom to express this commentary weighs heavier to me then your right not to be offended by that commentary. Especially since your problem in this case seems to lie with popular opinion or society at large rather then this joke in particular or T-mans method of conveying it. Frankly the chance of offending someone with that particular joke seems very slim, even as sexist jokes go, if it is to be considered as such (the fact that it DID happen to offend someone in this case notwithstanding).

To demand of T-man to exercise more self-censuring to the point of not posting these types of very tame jokes (in my opinion), would be asking too much and might deprive people of what many obviously find valuable comments.

[EDIT] I also upvoted T-mans comment before I decided to write this, but more to show support of me finding it acceptable then finding it funny. As an additional note about its offensiveness I can mention this video:
http://www.videosift.com/video/Zero-Punctuation-Review-Super-Mario-Galaxy
Just in the first minute Princess Peach is referred to as Marios "emotionally retarded ball and chain", a "needy bitch who fails to put out" and a "clueless bint". So it seems to me that if these types of stereotypes and jokes is something that is in danger of offending a lot of people then things like that would be of higher priority then comments like T-mans (on a side note I did however find that video hilarious).

T-mansays...

Oy. Last joke I post for a while. But for future reference, could we all please post the subjects that offend us so we know what's not allowed.

I'll start. I'm a white, American male from Texas. So no jokes about white people, Americans, men, or Texans/Texas. I'm tall and slightly overweight so no tall jokes or fat jokes (or jokes about food in general - I'm very sensitive about my weight). I speak English - so no jokes in English (that's a joke - sorry if I offended anyone). I'm a husband, a son, a brother, and a father - so all husband/wife/father/son/daughter/brother/mother jokes are completely out of bounds (and let's add in-laws - which is really too bad because mine visited over the holidays and I have a doozy!). And being a husband means I'm in a relationship - so no relationship jokes. I have an inner-ear condition so all jokes about people getting dizzy or falling down are not allowed. I've had sex in the past 12 months - so no sex jokes. I'm into politics, video games, and sports - so don't even think about joking about those. I'm also am a member and frequent this sight - so no Videosift jokes. I'm obviously a very funny person and love jokes so no jokes about jokes.

Hmm... that's really all I can think of right now. Who's next?

[Actually I just thought of one. I obviously posted this message so no joking about it. OK? I'm not joking.]

persephonesays...

Lithic, I've got a strong social conscience and to my mind, social opinion is heavily influenced by stereotypes and anything that reinforces stereotypes. This kind of joke reinforces stereotypes. I'm not telling T-man to stop posting them, just to consider that he's going to offend. Not all people find stereotypes funny. I for one get really frustrated with them, because although they may make some or even many people chuckle, for the most part, I don't think they make people THINK.

Thank you for asking me why I was offended, T-man. If sharing my views with you helps you understand how tired women can get from all the anti-girlfriend/wife jokes there are, then I see that as a good thing. If you want to share with me when something I post offends you, I'll be glad to hear it. I won't think you are trying to censor me, just educate, which if done with kindness and tact, is the best thing I think we can do for each other.
