Honda ASIMO Falls Down Stairs

EMPIREsays...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooo Asimo!!!!!! Sniff sniff
My dreams of a future filled with robots came crashing down, alongside ASIMO
It's weird actually... after looking careful, I'd say that ASIMO either totally shutdown and/or lost power, or only the right leg did, because it was going fine, and then the right leg just gave in to the weight.

Standard robot issue... if you aren't in a stable state at all times (aka on wheels, at least three feet on ground, etc) then you'd better not lose power or have a software failure or lose a motor, or else this is what happens.

These humanoid robots are neat but aren't practical from a "we're researching robotics" kind of way. That said, I'm glad Honda has been making some progress in the humanoid area since our universities/government agencies sure haven't, and at some point a humanoid robot could be useful.

Also: Hi, long time fan, new registeree.

Yeah, looked like a power failure... but I thought the presenter was pretty pro by just forging on, adlibbing. Who knows, perhaps she'd planned for this contingency?

(not that I could understand what she was saying or anything..)

The robots we all romanticize, in our idyllic visions, of a cooling globe, no gas prices, and moving sidewalks, is George Nanotech, and his Microscopic Robot Army of Cell Replication.

Remember the galaxy, in "Men in Black"? Twas teensy-weensy.

The Honda-bot crumpled under the weight of that rubbish bin on his back.

Deanosays...

That god they preserved the robot's dignity. I hope the resuscitation was a success.

Choggie, I believe he dispenses used knickers out of that thing. In fact that's why they built it.

Kevlarsays...

It's about time the little video that could (and the Little Robot That Couldn't) gets some air-time again *promoted to the front page.

Oh, and every time I see this the walk mechanics strike me as someone drunk trying to sneak back into his house (including the fall).
