Excellent footage of the Vancouver Stanley Cup riot 2011

This is one of those things... that is WAY to often forgotten on the sift... this is a VERY small group of assholes making a really great group of people look bad!... Most certainly not a representation of Canadians... folks from Vancouver... or even the silly fans of the team...

Vancouver is a beautiful city and some of the friendliest people i've ever been fortunate enough to visit...

I say any city that has something like this happen should have the team responsible disband.

Edit: for the record that includes my own hometown, Boston for the Rex Sox riots in which a woman died from a rubber bullet to the face.

@Sarzy - Thats a really ignorant thing to say. Whats your logic ? " A couple thousand people in a city out of a country of millions have a riot, that reflects on Canada as a whole "

I say this is flawed horrendously. I am ashamed of that sort of logic.

@eric3579 Embarrassed at the human race ? What are you embarrassed about.

@ponceleon Thats just .. I honestly dont know a polite word for stupid.

I wouldn't of commented if there where more sane responses. I am the light, come to me and ye logic restored.

A good day to you all.

Obviously these hooligans do not represent Canada as a whole, and I'm sorry if I implied that. But it saddens me that this was able to happen at all, and over something as inconsequential as a hockey game no less.

Uhh, this is hardly a Canadian phenomena. Every Superbowl-winning city in America undergoes a similar thrashing post-game. Every NBA Championship, World Series, Stanley Cup, etc. and there's some violent act. Different degrees, sure. But SOME level of violence.

I think I have the reason why. It's sports.

Sports, by it's nature, is anti-intellectual. Now, I'm not going to condemn everything anti-intellectual because people like Adam Sandler would be unemployed. But then Adam Sandler fans do not destroy the theater after watching his shitty movies, in celebration of how shitty they are. I'm not asking anyone to like my opinion...but I'm afraid the problem is sports itself.

I'm open to hearing other theories, of course. But my theory fits the facts rather well.

Can you tell I'm not much of a sports fan?

Thanks to social media and the utter stupidity of most of those partaking in the rioting most of them will be busted. Hundreds of these morons have posted pictures of themselves committing criminal acts on Facebook. One girl was stupid enough to give an interview to a TV crew while holding looted goods in her arms.

On the bright side of all this, hundreds of Vancouverites went downtown yesterday and volunteered in the cleanup effort. Many more are helping in other ways. This one night does not represent our city.

Tinglessays...

Was working in North Van during this silly Cotillion. Ran into a lot of people that had gotten out of there safely and was kept in the loop throughout the night. Just insane. Saw the black smoke clouds from across the water.

I interact with a lot of people in my job, so many of them over the last few weeks all predicted this. They told me they were all 100% positive that win (yes win) or lose there would be riots. It is sad when so many people that live in this city can call this weeks away.

I would like elaborate about the Surrey comment. This is definitely a symptom of one of the problems. I do not believe people that physically live in downtown or close by would partake in this. It costs a fucking arm and a leg to live here, and destroying things isn't high on our list of things to do in our home. I'm sure some of the people were drunken idiots that lived here, but I believe the majority of these people that went completely off are from out of town. In the end I guess none of that really matters.

What made things worse were the spectators. People sticking around and watching, and those cheering on the human sh*tpiles while they were going nuts. Had the majority of people gotten the F out of downtown once it started like they should have, the effects would have been less felt no doubt in my mind. It pains me to say it, but I feel the people that stuck around just to watch and laugh are just as responsible as those causing physical damage.

I was at a sport-related "riot"; weirdest part was one really nice SUV parked right in the middle of things had five or six huge dudes standing around it, and the second someone tried to climb on it or shake it or anything these dudes would just start swinging. It was like they were in some fight club and saw that this event would allow them to get into a lot of fights.

It's not sports, it's not Canada, it's not the US...it's mob mentality. Social psychology, you cannot change. Sorry some things just are. The educated may be able to catch themselves falling victim to this primitive form of community, but the majority will succumb.
