Larsen [the 75 year-old boat driver], a Roseburg resident, told The Oregonian/OregonLive by phone Friday that he wasn’t using his cellphone while driving his Bayliner and referred to such allegations as “fake news.” Larsen also said a lawsuit seemed unnecessary because the people in the Weldcraft weren’t hurt badly.

Interestingly, as I read it, he's already admitted guilt regardless of whether he was on his phone or not. He admitted driving while seated, completely unable to see where he was going, compounded by the claim he continued to do so after being warned it wasn't safe. Sure seems like he was failing to operate his boat with due care by any measure.
I hope he has good insurance, because they should all win their lawsuits.
That's one expensive day on the water.

citing fake new likely indicates he's a trump fan and would be more proof of the stupidity of people that follow him

I saw this story on the TV news and I think they said he was getting sued for something like 150,000$ and was facing multiple criminal charges (not specified). They also said his age was in the 70s and that he was sitting down when it happened

they're lucky they saw this in time and that no one froze up when it happened
