My first thought was that newly-created accounts probably get more hits by design so new users are immediately met with success at monster.com. If she'd changed her own profile to "white" with the same results that would mean more. Even better would be creating TWO new identical profiles, one white and the other black. It would still be anecdotal, but it would be a true comparison of equal things.

I agree with you, but what's the alternative? If we didn't do affirmative action, there wouldn't nearly as many minorities in higher positions as there is now. While we still have racial problems, they would be set back at least 20-30 years if we didn't give them a boost, artificial or not. There would always be exceptions of course, but minorities would still be in mostly service positions today. The idea of a minority being a CEO or getting elected into public office would still be an alien concept.
The sooner we treat them as equals, the sooner we level the playing field, the sooner Affirmative Action goes away, so quit bitching about first world problems and lets move forward so that Aff. Action IS unnecessary.

That means that the discrimination was on the basis of name. One name is linked to lower socioeconomic status than the other name.

Maxxsays...I'm calling shenanigans. I'm fairly sure browsing employers cannot see the race at all, so that eliminates that as a possibility. I know from experience whenever I've scrapped an old job search profile and created a new one...I got hits, when I hadn't heard from anyone for months. They may have something interesting going on with the name...I'm not sure. In my personal opinion I think it's far more likely the creation of an entirely new profile is explanation enough to account for the increase in attention. Racism and discrimination is still an issue in this country, but I don;t think this is a very good demonstration of the problem

If you were raised on that idea being normal, sorry, it just doesn't go away for many people. And guess what, those people teach their kids the same discrimination. They don't understand why they're supposed to hate them, but that's how they were taught even though they might even know any black people. Eventually they might meet a black and they have to make a choice as to believe what they were taught or to reject it.
Its going to take a few generations. We're not probably going to live a completely integrated society.
Gotta also remember it wasn't that long ago whites discriminated among themselves based on ethnicity. Whether or not you had a job depended on if you were Irish or Italian, etc. And they made all the same bullshit arguments against the other ethnicities that whites say about blacks and other minorities now. It was bullshit then and it's bullshit now. It's not much of an issue now because there are only a handful of people still alive to even remember when that was an issue.
