Awesome Aborted Landing on a Russian Carrier

rychansays...

Why did the pilot abort that, and why so violently? The weather conditions seemed good, the approach looked fine. He yanked the stick back so hard his tail hook nearly dragged. edit: someone on Youtube points out that his tail hook DID grab and snap two of the wires. Wow.

What an incredibly well designed aircraft. That it didn't stall, even despite it's very high angle of attack and low air speed... just amazing.

It looks like he(she?) was still a bit too high and tried to drop engine power to quickly lose those last few feet. That made the tail-end of the plane fall out, since that's where I'm guessing they stack all the weight. The heavy back end must be what makes it so damn maneuverable!

Ouch, you NEVER want to hit the first wire...that means you are coming in way to shallow. The goal is to hit the third wire. That is a hard angle to make out if he was coming in to high then cut back throttle or if he was always coming in low. My guess is he was coming in to low. You NEVER are cutting throttle at that stage of a landing, in fact, you are applying throttle for just such an event as this. If you go through some assorted landing videos, you will always hear it get louder right as they are about to hit the tarmac, that is because you are supposed to throttle up to full throttle. If you are cutting throttle at that stage of a carrier landing, you should lose your wings.

I submit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecoeU2OugSg for some good first person view and sound of what a landing is.

He can't have aborted because of the snapped wires though, reflexes just aren't fast enough. I'm sure he got the order to abort before the hook touched the first wire. They probably saw he was coming in too fast.

Nice stuff there

I come from a long naval tradition, so that read is a throw back to some of my Pa's stories. He would get on someone when they complained about being "stressed out" or something. He would bust out with you don't know what stress is till you are landing in dead of night, on a small white dot in the ocean, in hostile air space, with no fuel, an engine out and in the middle of a hurricane. Ya, being a civilian is nice

So you're dad's a jerk who has to denigrate everyone in the world who hasn't experienced the same thing that he has?

Oh, well, I'm sure he's in good company.

I can see a whole movie being written just to factor this in as the hero's finishing move on the evil villain at the end!

"I can see Bin Laden in my sights! But I'm completely out of ammo!"

"Don't do it Jim! You'll never make it!"

"I have to lucy - It's the world at stake! ... I guess there's only one thing for it - I'm going to blast him with my Jet Exhaust!"

I don't think he snagged any wires. It looks like the hook hit the deck and bounced (pretty common), and 2 wires would never snap at the same time. That would be a ridiculous failure. I think it's more likely that since he was coming in so shallow they didn't want to risk him hitting the back of the ship and they waved it off at the last second.>> ^rychan:
