A song being denied airtime in Britain

This song was denied airtime on most British TV and radio stations because it's “making light of rape, religion and abortion”.

Read all about it on Amanda's blog:

Did you ever stop to wonder if the reason it's not getting airplay may actually be more simple than that?

From her blog: "Many of the stations like the track, and even the video but are bound by strict broadcasting rules."

Yeah, that's probably the easiest way to get rid of her...

Hmmm, I'm going along the lines of 'Hey, I know a way to get noticed, make a song that's offensive, pretend to try to get it aired, knowing already they won't let it be and then make a lot of noise about it being banned so people will come and watch/listen to it on the interwebs'

It's trying to do a reverse thing of pretending to make light of something that is really a really emotional and traumatic subject, well it doesn't work, just comes across as downplaying how horrible these things are for someone to experience.
I've read her little ramble over it in her blog and she says it's supposed to be about people who don't let the severity of these experiences get to them, but you HAVE to know how this song will play to a lot of people... and she gets all uppity about people's reactions to it.

Look... all well and good to have this as a track on an album, but to expect it to get national airplay is just stupid, don't try to go on any 'freedom of expression' bullshit. No one is stopping you releasing the track, no one is stopping you performing it live, just radio stations and the like don't want to cop the lashback from listeners who will take offense. And I would say they think 'yeah, it's not that an amazing track anyway, can't be bothered with the fallout'.

For her to get so shitty in her blog about people taking offense to the track and 'not getting it' is the typical insular mindset of 'fuck you all, THIS is what I meant, and if you take it ANY other way you're a dumbshit'. That's called having an entire lack of empathy, so she should grow up a bit... it's not like the song is frigging high art or anything.

YES it has a reasonable point to it, but stop being so indignant that others might take it the wrong way. GEEZE

Beat me to the common sense comment, Spoco. Thanks for saying what needs to be said.

Not to mention the music is just awful. I'd think that even if I liked this genre, it just has zero quality to it whatsoever. It's not like they wrote this song because they wanted people to enjoy music they create. I'm thinking the whole mentality of this song was "I'm going to say something that'll piss people off. I don't know, throw some silly melody in the back. Whatever, it doesn't matter."

I aktually like the music..

I am not really into the video or the lyrics.

It's ok if you don't like it and it's ok if tv stations dont' want to show it..

Should it be banned - No of course not..

I personally think that this isn't half as bad than lets say ...chart shows from a musical and moral point of view

And pissing people off to get attention is quite common in showbiz and worse people have done it.

But her beeing so shitty on her blog is another story..

Have to update moral meter:
Playing shooters, killing people at random ---- OK
Watching girls making fun about rape ---- NoNo

I don't think she was so shitty about it on her blog. Sure, it was a rant and she said as much herself, but it also had some valid points even though it came across a bit ranty. I too would probably be a bit gruff if my song, if it had a good chance of being played, was denied airtime because of those reasons. I simply don't see why you can't make light of rape, abortion and least of all religion. Following that logic, it would be illegal to make fun of racists because it would promote more racism. We actually have a comedian here in Norway who is accused of racism for exactly that reason.

The song wasn't really that offending either. The rape and abortion was simply a backdrop to show how shallow the girl portrayed in the song was. In that way, the music conveys the meaning through the slightly careless singing and the uptempo and happy band.

When I got to the party
They gave me a 40
And I must have been thirsty
'Cuz I drank it so quickly

When I got to the bedroom
There was somebody waiting
And it isn't my fault
That the barbarian raped me

When I went to get tested
I brought along my best friend
Melissa Mahoney
who had once been molested
And she knew how to get there
She knew all the nurses
They were all really friendly
But the test came up positive

(Chorus)
Uh-oh
I've seen better days
But I don't care
Oh I just sent a letter in the mail

When I got my abortion
I brought along my boyfriend
We got there an hour
Before the appointment
And outside the building
Were all these annoying fundamentalist Christians
We tried to ignore them

(Chorus)
Uh-oh
I've had better days
But I don't care
Oasis got my letter in the mail

(Up-Beat Break)

When vacation was over
The word was all over
That I was a crack whore
Melissa had told them
And do now we're not talking
Except we have tickets to see 'Blue in October'
And I think we're still going

(Chorus)
Uh-Oh
I've seen better days
But I don't care
Oh I just got a letter in the mail
Oasis and a photograph
It's autographed and everything
Melissa's gonna wet herself I swear
