OMG! The way they determined their “retaliatory tariffs” was to divide what the countries sell America by what they buy from America (the trade gap, not tariffs).
This took a 7% tariff in China and to match us China raised it to 35% based on this idiotic random methodology they decided on.
How did they figure out this metric? They asked CHATGPT to develop a tariff policy for them (without it knowing basic economics or the difference between a trade gap and a tariff).
If you input "What would be an easy way to calculate the tariffs that should be imposed on other countries so that the US is on even playing fields when it comes to trade deficit? Set minimum at 10%." into ChatGPT you get the exact tariff plan they proposed, with the exact same complete misunderstandings of economic terms and realities (like the fact that the US buys more than we sell by choice, or that uninhabited areas can’t be tariffed effectively).

Shocker, because American doesn’t produce products, every country sells us more than we sell them….chatgpt didn’t understand this is by our own design.

How were these tariffs determined? Take Vietnam, who barely imposes tariffs on the US, but they sell us $136 billion in goods and only buy $13 billion from us…he calls that a 90% tariff and generously only imposed a 45% tariff on them. Trade gaps are not tariffs…Vietnam doesn’t have $136 billion to spend on American goods, nor do they want them. This is what we get when not one person running the economy is an economist or even successful at business (without billions in government handouts and bailouts).
