More a question of etiquette or form than features or functions:
1) Is it poor or proper form to vote for a vid that one submitted? I always vote immediately after submitting a vid, essentially giving it its first vote. But I notice some of us do not vote for their own vids, possibly thinking it poor form (though I cannot be sure of this). Consistently applied over time, these differing approaches can create a significant discrepancy in total votes a user has accrued. So, what should be considered "proper" form? (or perhaps I should just keep my big mouth shut and let those who don't vote for their own submissions live with it) (oh, too late)

2) More than once, I have found that vids I submitted have received "down" votes, and many times I have no idea why. It's clear many of us apply different standards or seek different qualities when we cast our vote (e.g., some of us may weigh production values highly, some may consider cultural significance, others may not care as long as it's funny, or cute or whatever, etc..) But I always want to know why certain vids get a negative vote.. in part because I think I take it more personally when it's negative. I know I can sometimes be somewhat whimsical when I vote a "+". No harm done if I vote for something just because it makes me smile, say. But I am much more judicious when distributing "-" votes, so when a vid I suggest receives one I'd like to encourage commentary. What factors led to the vote?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Good questions. As we are still a pretty new community, I think it's a matter of forming a consensus, and then putting it in the FAQs.

For the first one, I always vote for my own videos and I can't imagine a reason why you would submit a video and then not want to vote for it. It's been suggested that we add an "autovote" on submit, and I think that's what we'll do. soon.

On the second one - I agree, that I like to know why people are down-voting, but I don't think we should compel people to justify their negative vote. As you say SFJocko, it's very subjective, but as the community expands (and it's really expanding), 1 or 2 negative votes will matter less and less over time among a flood of positive votes.

If you are really irked about some negative votes, I think you have the right to call it out in the comments. I don't think it's bad etiquette to request an explanation for a down vote.

You know if this is a democratic community - and I like to think it is - the executive and judicial offices are particularly weak. We're strong in the legislature, but think of the biggest pussy of a vice-president and president that ever was - and that's James and I.

James would be Walter Mondale, and I'd be like Dukakis, if he had ever become president. My point is ... uhm, yeah - my point is, it's great that we can all make this up as we go along. A lot of the changes that have been made to date have been because of the member (congressional) ideas. Maybe I'm stretching this metaphor a bit. Maybe I should go to bed.

So, don't expect us to send troops into Fark, though God knows they could use some regime change.

I have the impression we're starting to see a wave of submissions that are a second round -- of vids that had made it to the front page but eventually were taken down by the host site. I swear it seems in the past day I saw at least 3 if not more of these reposts.

Just an observation.
