Unauthorized Copyrighted Music in YouTube Videos Muted
This morning Mashable reports that YouTube has muted videos that use copyrighted music without permission. This affects a lot videos on the Sift. So how are we going to respond?

By saying, "oh shit that's sucks, the man is a wanker!" What the hell else are we supposed to do?
Are muted videos going to be considered "dead"?
Apparently the music industry, like the film and television industries, hates free promotion.
But, there's an upside: No more fucking AMVs.
NO ENJOYING LIFE UNLESS YOU PAY FOR IT!
All those "I upvoted for the music" comments are going to look stupid now.
hahahaah - "On the other hand, maybe this will put an end to all the shitty “tribute to Johnny Depp with music by usher” type videos that keeps being uploaded. When you think about it, most of the user uploads with copyrightet music in them, sucks. I guess freedom has to take a bow for this one."
Then again are they going to mute just about every music video on there? Because if they do then all the music channels here are going to be worthless
Some music videos are available through other video hosts, but not all of them.
Does this mean Rick Rolls are gone forever?!
Not to fear, Rick Astley has his own channel:

*halfdead?
I think we kind of have to call them dead, right? I mean, what's the point in watching if you can't hear anything. I'm sure there's exceptions, where the music is only background to some otherwise awesome vid, but best to set policy on the norm, not the exception.

*mutant would be more appropriate I guess...
They´d be like video zombies without a brain...
Anyone find an example of this here on the sift yet?
Here are the examples from the above mentioned mashable article:

I quit.
Seriously though I been trying to switch into Vimeo and Dailymotion for music videos, not only are these host outside the domain of US companies, they also feature higher resolution vids, better audio and no more of those stuck Youtube video crap.
I don't personally care.
Most of those user-created videos suck, official music videos are what I seek anyway.
And, as a recording artist and label owner, I do see the point. I don't agree with it, but then again it's only happened to me a few times on YouTube.
I also don't see how the "creativity should be free" argument has anything to do with this. If these bands wanted to give their music away for free, they wouldn't sign with a record label. They'd just make a shitty myspace page and spread their download links.
BTW what happens when the video is copyrighted and the music is not?
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
Any examples on the Sift? And I agree that we would have to call them dead - and hopefully they will get replaced with a more reliable source. Splintering of YouTube is well underway.

So far I've only seen this affect OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEOS.
Ugh.
Can Lucky create a new invocation? *dumb, which would be literally more accurate than *-dead?
Technically we still have a video, it's just missing a critical "half". No sense depriving of someone who wants to "upvote the official music video" from doing so if they want to - but we want the dead mechanism in place to allow for the clip to be fixed.
I propose that until the *dumb command comes into play (if ever <grin>) we politely ask the Sifter to update their clip with a working copy - if one can be found. And that's usually not hard.
If the Sifter is gone (no response after a few days or you know they're away for a while) then call it dead and run the fix yourself.
