To be clear, Alexa isn't something that "VideoSift uses." Rather, it's a broken statistical collection system that the Internet industry (advertising, primarily) still strongly relies on. It's not a system VS has installed or anything, the data collection is performed via web browsers that have the toolbar installed.

I look forward to the day a much more reliable method of web usage quantification becomes the most accepted.

Agreed, we have experienced a lot of the problems cmdrtaco mentions. Most notably the ie 6 - ie 7 upgrade dropped our ranking by like 3,000 points.

Mr. Taco is absolutely right - on all counts.

However, for a smaller (non-slashdot size) community, we can leverage the flaws of Alexa to our advantage. Advertisers do use it as a metric - and as we are about to punch through 4K in Alexa - we have received an uptick in our advertising revenue!

helping out the community in this way, cheesy as it may be - it is helping to finance the new server.
