New Feature: Playlists (VideoSift 2.3)

The new playlist feature has made it's way to the forefront and is now ready for member consumption. Essentially, this allows you members to create your own personal video collections either for your own review or to share with others via an easy-to-remember link.

You can get started in lots of different ways: 1) click on the 'add to playlist' link below any video to select one of your existing playlists or create a new playlist and the video will be added to it; 2) go to the playlist page in your member profile and click the 'create' link to create a new playlist - this is also the place where you can manage all your playlists.

You can specify whatever name you'd like for your playlists to make it easier to share the URL/address with others. Also, playlists can have an access of private or public. If a playlist is public, everyone can view it, otherwise only its creator can have access to it.

Also, playlist summary sidebar boxes have been added to the side of member profile pages and are also beside playlists themselves. These summarize the first few videos in the latest few playlists of the member. To accomodate these sidebar boxes in customizable charter profiles, some default styles for charter profiles had to be tweaked a bit, so if there are any uglies that you now notice, you may need to adjust it accordingly.

When a video is added to a playlist, it is always appended to the end of the list. Videos are always shown in playlists in the order in which they are saved. If you want to rearrange the order of the videos, you can do that from the playlist video manager page.

If there are any problems with this new feature, please announce them here and we'll address them as soon as possible. Enjoy!

I can't see the 'add to playlist' either... I've created a list, but it has no videos in it cuz I can't add any

Sounds like a good feature, when I get to use it

Mooseman says...

Oh wait, now I see it. As soon as I complain about something, it starts working >.<
Ah well, great feature anyway. I've got lots of links I saved to my net favourites, nice to put them all on one page. Thanks!

Sorry for that temporary hiccup, folks. There were just a couple of bumps that needed smoothing out. Everything should be running without a problem now.

I have to admit, (not to pat ourselves on our backs or anything) I am already intrigued by this feature. Just looking at Mooseman's first playlist, I'm realizing it's going to be fascinating to see what videos members save to their playlists.

Mooseman says...

Ah! I'm being watched

Another bug, sorry - When I edit a playlist via the 'settings' button, and try to change the privacy setting, when I click save it says: "you already have a playlist with that name"

I had to change the name, then edit again and change it back. Also the you in "you already have a..." should be capitalised (I think?)

FYI, we just added another neat little add-on to this feature. When viewing a playlist, there is now an 'email this' link that acts exactly like a normal video email pop-up window but links to the playlist instead. Note that this link will only appear on public playlists because your private playlists are not accessible by anyone else anyway.

nice feature.

the CSS is giving me (paul) a headache. is there any way to bring the playlist inside the main profile box? (the one with all the stats). or at least to have it display at the same level as it (not right up at the top of the page)?

right now the playlist is bumping everything off-center, even if i set it to "display: none;". and when it's showing it interrupts the navbar. even if i set a top-margin value, the element still pushes the navbar links over and squishes them down onto a second line. i don't know enough CSS to know how to fix this...

lucky760 says...

I've modified the charter profile playlist sidebars to display below the header link bar. That should help, Paul. Let me know if you need help with the CSS after you adjust.

lucky760 says...

Absolutely! From the body of this ST post (added after you read it, I'm sure):
When a video is added to a playlist, it is always appended to the end of the list. Videos are always shown in playlists in the order in which they are saved. If you want to rearrange the order of the videos, you can do that from the playlist video manager page.

In the video manager for the playlist you can move videos up and down into the positions that you'd like.

And... you're welcome! Don't forget to give Dag and James their props, as well.

lucky760 says...

Oh! I see. They are currently listed in order of newest to oldest playlist (by creation date) and are limited to the top 10, and there is no way to modify that, but we will put some consideration into making that possible. So, until that time, sorry, but they'll have to remain in that default ordering.

one more CSS hiccup:
-- the sidebar playlist boxes are pushing down the comments. the comments box is in the right place, but the actual comments are being pushed down.

also, a suggestion: maybe the playlist titles could be styled independently, or in the same style as one of the other headings (like "comments" or the navbar titles)

lucky760 says...

Okay, all (especially mlx). You can now change the order of your playlists. On your main playlist page you'll now find 'up'/'down' buttons to do the rearranging.

As for the styling, plastiquemonkey, we'll focus on doing something about that soon. Thanks for the patience.

Thanks again for all the work on this feature - a couple of minor faults/suggestions I've found:
+ comment info style CSS has changed (posted comments info areas are wider)
+ the playlist is stuck on the right (won't follow my setting to float top/bottom/left)
+ playlist box style doesn't change after my profile modifications } my.videosift.com url doesn't use box style CSS
+ a remove from playlist with the add to one would be a useful shortcut, if viewing a playlists page a checkbox to delete with an apply button for multiple removals in playlist manager?

lucky760 says...

What do you mean, benjee? What kind of restriction are you talking about? As far as the profile listing goes, the only thing to know is the first 10 playlists are shown in sidebar boxes. Those are re-arrangeable in your playlist manager. There aren't any type of "restrictions" on them.

benjee says...

That one: I meant the playlist preview (in profile) is restricted to the first ten playlists - I wanted to double check (I thought it was nine). The comment info CSS width is the only fault I have with the feature...
