For PS3?

uhh, try the Uncharted games.

They've got some shooting, but a lot of exploring and some pretty good humour. It's a good way to get your girlfriend into games.

That, and Little Big Planet.

You may think it looks retarded, but it really is amazing.

rottenseed says...

It came with Uncharted 2. She says the main character is hot. Aside from that disturbing remark, I'll see if she wants to give it a run

Also, Little Big Planet doesn't looks stupid at all, and it sounds like a great game to bond with people.

I upvote Little Big Planet. And the sequel when it comes out in January.

The Move controller (Wii rip-off) looks neat, but I haven't played it personally, so couldn't say if it's good or not, but should be casual-gamer friendly. (although the cost of camera and 2 controllers is more than the cost of a Wii)

There are also demos that you can download directly to PS3 from PSN network. It's free to sign up. Maybe your girlfriend will also think Kratos (God of War) is hawt

If you have two controllers then any of the Lego games: Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman, etc. They're a hit with the chicks, and they're enjoyable for us, too.

Uncharted 2 is an awesome game, but if you're playing she'd have to be spectator. Bioshock, Heavy Rain and Red Dead Redemption are games that are great for spectators, as well.

Or just buy games you like and tell her to go crochet a doily or something.

Games that Issy likes

-Pain - Slingshot a dude into different hazardous environments. It's sick, funny and strangely satisfying.
-Echochrome - MC Escher: The Game
-Lumines - A hip and addictive take on Tetris
-Chime - (not yet on PS3) is another puzzle game with some nice music
-Pacman CE and DX - Pacman on X
-Rockband/Rockband Beatles - Good times.

She also got a couple of hours of enjoyment out of the free PS3 virtual space 'Home', but it's pretty lame overall.

Other recommendations

-Little Big Planet - Fun for two players with tons of clever user generated content.
-Heavy Rain - an extremely exiting interactive movie, but unlike most interactive movies, this one doesn't suck.
-Flower - beautiful and unique gaming experience. I wish there were more games like this.
-LocoRoco Coccoricco - a weird Japanese game, where you are a butterfly trying to coax these little smiley faces to follow you. Very unique gameplay and design.

Rockband is a good starting choice (so is Lego: Anything), but Rockband has the added bonus of it being a true party game. If she likes to sing/play bass-lead/drums or keyboard go Rockband 3.

Plus it teaches you the basics of drumming and (in a few months) will support a full 6-string electric guitar (250$ though ), but it'll teach you how to play that too. That's pretty fu&*in rare in any game--giving you a skill.

If you know more about music it'll support some (I haven't looked into this area yet) full midi-keyboards--which once again it has a full training mode. It supports midi-drums as well, just make sure you get a midi-adapter (Madcatz makes some).

Expensive, but a unique experience. If you want to learn guitar don't bother with this till March or so. Plus Lego: Star Wars is cheap, after that I'd go Lego: Harry Potter (it has a lot of charm going for it).

Oh and: Why, yes, I do play videogames. <geek>

One more thought. I'm not sure what games you can all get on their online service, but if it's about the same as XBLive Arcade I'd go for these games as they seem to be sure winners. Plus a few you'll like.

Puzzle Quest (1&2)- Really Addictive and rpg'ish so it'll keep your attention. Standard puzzle game, but with all the things you expect to find in an RPG. Very fun. Also on the DS/iPhone(at least PQ:2 is)/and I believe the PSP. The first is slightly better than the second IMHO.

Bejewelled- Specifically the second one.

Hexic (1&2)- This is a good strategy/puzzle game. It's not necessarily a fast paced puzzler and it's actually the type of puzzler that rewards you to think your moves ahead a bit. The second one has more combos, but loses some of the strategy elements, because it's faster. They are still both good games.

Hexic I've only seen on XBLive Arcade so I'm unsure if it'll be on Sony's setup.

I don't have a PS3 yet, but if you can download trials and let her try them out that will be your best option (unless it's a straight-up gift). Of course (as I said I haven't tried the online service yet) if the "trials" are like the Wii's idea of a "trial" as in, "Oh, here, go ahead and try this game for 15 seconds; it would be 30 seconds, but you NEED to watch this movie first; no you can't skip it, it's too awesome to do that!"... Then your screwed that route.

Someone with more trialing experience on the Playstation Network want to add on?
Anyway, there are a lot of cheap game choices as well. You'll be bound to find a type she enjoys a lot. Goodluck.

Thank you for all the advice. I have a list now of things to look for and try out. I've already found the PS3 a good addition to our household as it acts as a media center (I don't have to bring my laptop downstairs and plug it in to the TV). I've also bought a subscription to Netflix and am thinking about doing Hulu plus (any thoughts?).

These features are all amazing to me as the last console I owned was SNES (no joke).

kceaton1 says...

Netflix is a definite yes. If you don't want to rent "everything" then you don't need the DVD option. I have one DVD+Blu-Ray (for HBO/Showtime/Miscellaneous TV/HD Movies) stuff and that covers just about any rental I'm thinking of then on the streaming side at the 8$/month is a solid deal. Tons of net content, lots of it is in HD.

The worst thing about the PS3 is the frequent, eternal patch updates. Unlike the xbox, which quickly installs updates in the background, the PS3 forces you to wait sometimes up to a half hour or more to install medium sized patch updates. Some call it the progress bar station. I'm not sure why Sony is so far behind the other consoles in this respect. It's annoying.

Microsoft has a hard limit on patches, something like 20 Meg and patches cost the developer an increasing amount per patch released. Sony does not limit patch sizes nor how many are released. Sony isn't behind, it is just that they don't have any limits.

Get Gran Turismo 5 and a badass steering wheel with force feedback (I just did and its amazing.)
Then your woman can oooh and aaah as you drift all over the place like a crazy person.

I do that in real life...but instead of oooohs and aaaahs she's screaming and pissing herself. I love the smell of pissy pussy.

A great piece of software is PS3 Media Server. You can stream all your content from a PC/laptop to your PS3, and it recognizes every file format. It even creates transcodes in case you don't have the bandwidth required to stream a big file (like an mkv or some such thing).

Aside from video, you can also view photos and listen to music with it - every PS3 owner should have this set up.
