Informal Poll: how do you determine a "siftworthy" video?

There's plenty vids here on the sift I wouldn't ever want to be subjected to (again) and there's even some I don't want my kids to see (yet) and then there's some vids I just don't understand how in hell they made it out of queue. I do know that when I watch a vid my primary question is "is this something I will look back on in a year, ten years, etc, and think 'oh boy, I almost forgot about THAT one!'?"

Then there's the "gotta" - some vid, whether funny or gross or even "Wtf!?" (Especially "wtf!?") makes me want to grab someone and say "WATCH THIS!"

Some vids, while having a great idea, are of crappy production or coverage enough that I won't vote for them (or maybe even downvote) and there's some vids that despite being a crappy representation of an idea are -to my mind- so important I give an upvote anyway.

I know it's not simple for anyone, and probably most of the time you couldn't even say what gets your vote, but I'm curious what people will say when the question is put forth.

I guess I'm pretty boring: I post things I find edifying or highly entertaining. I also post things that I think others should see or know about (like some of the music I've posted and way-back machine vids), or would be happy to be informed of/privy to (like some of the movie clips). Then there's the occasional vote whoring post that someone or other is bound to post anyway, so I just soak up the votes and plot evil schemes with my privileges.

[edit]: guess I didn't read the whole talk post. I upvote pretty much the same things I post: anything edifying or highly entertaining; anything I think should make it to the front page; and anything I wish I had posted myself. Oh, i also upvote anyhthing I was looking to post, but got beat to submitting. For things that are longer than normal, say 7+ minutes, I'll upvote it pretty much no matter what if it keeps my interest 'til the end.

I pretty much only downvote stuff I think is offensive or in bad taste.

I always upvote anything when the people that post it get really excited about in their comments, like their fav song, etc.....Then I watch it-

Sometines I vote someones whole queue up, pqueue up, specially for milestones....Sometimes I forget to vote at all, cause I'm too busy musin'

like water, no shape, conform to the landscape-works for me-makes for some quality users, too-videos posted for most, reflect their inner world- associations, affirmations, convictions, when any become stale, is when ya start tweaking the user to think about the whys and hows of the motivation, and direction-can't stand the uni-dimensional, gotta have curves and lines, or it's simply a tired script-Go back and look at your old viddies 250's and above, and see how you have changed.....embrace the change-feel the burn, push the envelope..in further into the mailbox before someone steals yer identity....

If you notice my highest ranked video was my first submission. I've only gone downhill from that point. I'm getting more salty and critical in my old sift-age so it's harder to get an upvote out of me.

I'm partial to educational videos and things you just don't get to see in normal life. I tend toward witty or intelligent humor. Faceplants and nutshots are a dime a dozen, but once in a while one will stand out.

I'm pretty stingy with my votes and I'm probably one of the more active downvoters. Before voting I usually ask myself, "Does this belong on a list of the internet's best videos?" Most of the time the answer is no, at least in my opinion, and that's all I can offer.

I'm right there with you rottenseed! Had the same thing happen to me.

One thing about videosift is that more and more members are joining up. More people means a higher likelihood of getting votes. Maybe there should be some discussion about upping the number of votes needed to get something sifted to 15 or something?

I too wonder about some of these sifts. I sarcastically commented in one post that Siftbot should just auto-sift anything with "cat" as one of its tags. Don't get me wrong, I've sifted cat vids before and believe there is a place for them here on the Sift. But some of the stuff that is getting sifted (like this: http://catsanddogs.videosift.com/video/Cat-Music-Video) just kind of boggles me.

My general rule of thumb for voting is like everyone else has said here: if I find it laugh-out-loud funny and/or clever and/or informative I generally give it the upvote.

My voting usually goes by my gut. If the video feels ok or better it get's an upvote. If I get bummed out or just an "ugh" feeling, I give a downvote. I'm not exactly ruleslawyering my votes though, sometimes I have a bad day and things I would otherwise think was Ok is suddenly the worst thing I've ever seen.

The vast - and I do mean VAST - majority of sifts don't catch me at first glance, when looking at the queue and I don't watch them. I suppose I should downvote these, because they genuinely don't interest me, but most I just skip. This means that many of my downvotes are directly disappointments or things that, you know, catch me negatively.

For what I sift, it's usually something I remember from somewhere - music from my younger years or more obscure than the usual young pop-crap, or very often stuff related to another sift that started my train of thought.

I feel that this question is directed towards me for some reason... Really all I do is post videos that interest me... while some people like it and sift it, others just get overlooked... I can understand not everyone is into video games, but for those who are, I feel that I should spread the best of what the video game world has to offer...

But to ensure I keep on top of the other sifters, I usually post things that people can relate to, such as a man getting hit in the balls... everyone can relate to that...

I vote for Videos that

- make me laugh
- that make me think
- that are important
- that are rare

my definition of what puts a video into the categories is probably different from what everybody else thinks
