I'd like to rewrite the FAQ

Hey, Dag,
I was looking at the FAQ and noticed this passe description:

"VideoSift is an online community and passionate about Web video. Members submit videos from the best video hosts from around the Net to be voted on by other Sifters with only the best being "sifted" up to the front page. VideoSift was started in February 2006. Since then, we have grown to be the best video aggregator on the Web. PC World magazine agrees."

I have a week off between classes and would like to electrify some of your texts. What do you think? Here is an example:

"VideoSift is a unique and growing online community incredibly sincere and passionate about Web videos. Our collection of members are extremely talented, global, and crucial to our continued success. On VideoSift, registered members submit their favorite videos from the ever-expanding World Wide Web with the goal of getting that video "sifted" - i.e., 10 positive votes and a video reaches the front page.
VideoSift premiered in early February 2006. Since then, PC World Magazine agrees that we have evolved into the best video aggregator on the Net".

This is a sample of how I would like to edit the VideoSift FAQ. I'll do it for free, however I plan on including this in my resume of edited works. Dag suggersted that I achieve the majority voice of the community. And so, here we are. Another option, would be to have wikik style on-going description that members could contribute too. My question is, what do you think? Furthermore, I'd enjoy the green light to update our antiquated description.

I think your suggestion of a community created and maintained faq similar to the wiki style of things is a fantastic idea. Maybe requiring privileges since the veterans would likely have a better grasp on how things work. If you'd like to start the process and write the main body and e=set up the organization, I'd have nothing against it.

The FAQ is in need of a tune-up, so I'm all for it.

Whether we go the wiki route or let you be the "editor" is no biggie for me. If you want it on your resume, obviously a wiki route will work against that. And then there's also the whole vandalism thing.

I know for a fact, I have had a lot of trouble getting my bearings here, even if its been for a couple years, the information I always wanted was extremely difficult for me to find, I mean just going to find out simple things takes a bit of time to find when it should be pretty clear and easy.

Not just re-do the wording but the layout and information within. WORK WORK WORK I know but a lot less fuck you's would of been thrown by me and others if we understood more clearly how to edit things, what can/ cannot be done, etc. now all t hat information might be in the faq but its pretty jumbled together and hard to SIFT through.

*end opinion*

Not everything in the FAQ is as clear as it could be to an newbie, and sometimes to those who have been here a while - I have always thought it needed some re-wording and some up-dating!

I say "Do IT"

I agree the FAQ could use an overhaul but I don't think we should lie about being sincere and extremely talented.

Seriously though, it's a FAQ, not a billboard; just get the answers out there.

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Can I be a bit brutal and say that the sample rewrite reads a bit like a mission statement for a telemarketing company? Sorry. I agree that a rewrite is in order though.

Here's my shot:

VideoSift is an online community passionate about Web video. Members mainly submit videos from the best video hosts but frequently exclude non-US citizens by arguing about topical US politics. VideoSift was started in February 2006. Since then, we have trolls.

VideoSift is based on a unique proprietary content management system called Varo CMS. If you have a moment, be sure to visit the site and check out the bustling Varo CMS forum! Lots of Asian piss porn and disgusting shit in there for you to marvel at for hours. Please insure you have read the Posting Guidelines before submitting videos to our site - this is VideoSift, not Varo CMS' forum, so we're quick with the ban-hammering.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why did you ban me?
Probably because you angered the majority of members. You see, here at VideoSift we pride ourselves on an egalitarian approach not only on content management but also with user management.

How many votes does it take to get a video sifted up to the front page?
Ten votes. If you're popular and people like you, you'll be a gold star in no time. If no one knows you or if you're disliked, then you should probably not bother.

Why can't I submit QuickTime, Real, or Windows Media videos?
What year is this? You seriously want to embed Real Media? Why not use CinePak for all your encoding, Captain Cutting Edge?

The videos won't play! Is your site broken?
The fact that you're reading this FAQ question means you seriously believe it could be our fault a Flash video embedded from another site isn't playing. If the water in your sink doesn't turn on does that mean your house is broken?

What should I do if I find something on VideoSift that has been removed by the video host?
Run away screaming and flailing your arms.

Can I create or use more than one VideoSift account?
Sure. But only if you're name is Choggie Kendall. All others will be permanently banned.

Where's the porn?

How is a member's rank calculated?
Amazingly enough, we do a complicated algorithmic process called "addition". We then compare the sum of your votes with other member's sums. Whoever has a higher sum gets ranked higher. Voilà!

How does voting work?
No Juggalos allowed.

What is this SiftBot thing?
SiftBot is VideoSift's semi-sentient sergeant at arms and house-cleaning robot. Nah, we're just messing with you. It's just a cute name we gave some simple backend functions. But seriously, do not piss him off.

Where is the "edit" link for my comment?
You're becoming annoying with all these questions. Do you hear me asking you fifty questions a minute like a petulant child? No? That's because I don't rely on other people as crutches. How does that feel? To be handicapped at the internet?

THIS is just plain fucking proof that its easier to find a 4 leaf clover THAN it is to find information in the INFORMATION section.

how the fuck do you put it in multiple channel listings, I didnt mean to mess up the videos tags, I know now that command takes it out of every channel.. { kinda stupid} But I know you can put it into multiple channels, you have to ?

once again.

Cant find anything about anything.

I have these pretty new wings and I want to fly, I just keep bumping into shit though.

gwiz665 says...

Yeah, there's a bunch of information that needs to be told, which right now we users inform of when people ask.

Channels are posted with a * before each channel you put it in. All "invocations" are prefixed with a *.
