Discard -vs- Kill

So I am curious as to the difference between the kill and discard invoke. Let's say I have a dead video and want to remove it...would I kill or discard it? Or if I have an unsifted vid that I want to make disappear...is that a kill?

Maybe it doesn't matter which one you invoke when it comes to your own videos but I want to make sure I am understanding this correctly.

IIRC, discarded videos can later be promoted (or at, least they used to be) and killed videos are permanently removed - the only way to see them is an advanced search including killed videos.

So you'd want to kill dead videos that you never expect to be able to revive. A working, non-duplicate, unsifted vid is probably worth discarding on the off chance that someone might see it in some random search and like it enough to promote it out of oblivion.

In the earlier days of the site, there was no kill or personal queue, just discard. Videos that didn't get sifted got auto-discarded or you could invoke discard yourself if you wanted to free up a queue slot. I personally don't ever use the invocation anymore, but as jonny points out, there are still some practical applications. Also, I believe discard is the only way to get rid of a sift talk or blog post - I don't think kill works.

I tried resurrecting a discarded vid a few months back, and it didn't work so well for me. I've been meaning to lodge a bug request with @lucky760, promote of a discarded vid takes the power point, but doesn't appear to do anything else. It was probably also the worst time possible to double-submit a comment (facepalm).

I like the idea of being able to bring back discarded videos, even if it's not something you do every day (or even every year).

Indeed. Back in the day, gold-100 users could discard just about any post. I seem to remember a bit of a dustup over someone abusing that power. Oddly enough, both parties have been banned since for other infractions.

discard can be invoked on another members sift whereas kill cannot.
There was a time when dupeof did not exist and all dupes were discarded.
