Average Votes Per Video stat needs to be corrected

I mentioned this problem over a year ago, but nothing's been done it about so I thought I should mention it again.

Right now the Average Votes Per Video stat is not being calculated correctly because it isn't including the number of Unsifted videos and PQ videos in the formula. I'll give you an example by using the account of mas8705, only because I want to use an account whose numbers are currently stable, due to him not being here for a while.

Right now mas8705's Average Votes Per Video is shown as 28.35. However, by doing the math, I can tell that the formula included neither his Unsifted videos nor his PQ videos, because his total Votes Received count (9129) divided by his Sifted Videos (322) equals 28.35 votes/video. Now remember he received a total of 9129 votes for ALL of his videos, including his Unsifted and PQ videos. Therefore the Average Votes Per Video formula should look like this:

Average Votes Per Video = Total Votes/TOTAL videos

where:

TOTAL videos = Sifted videos + Unsifted videos + PQ videos

therefore:

Average Votes Per Video = Total Votes/(Sifted videos + Unsifted videos + PQ videos)

Therefore, if we were to plug in numbers from mas8705's account, it would look like this:

Average Votes Per Video = 9129 votes/(322 Sifted videos + 0 Unsifted videos + 289 PQ videos)

= 14.94 votes/video

As you can see, this makes a HUGE difference in the Average Votes Per Video statistic. Therefore if we're going to use this stat it needs to be properly calculated. I'm no code monkey, but I would think that modifying a simple formula wouldn't entail that much work at all, so I hope it can be fixed soon. Thx.

No need @kronosposeidon, I believe you. Just wasn't sure. Then yes, total videos should be all videos with votes on them, unsifted, PQ and sifted. This will, hopefully, discourage the PQ hoarding we see around too. The average rating needs to be more important to users for that to work well, though.

kronosposeidon says...

^I agree about PQ hoarding, but the main thing for me is just accurately recording the numbers here. If it's not an accurate number, then it either needs to be fixed or eliminated. There are a lot of stat nerds here, so I hope they're in agreement with us on this topic.

Throbbin says...

Ok, I agree with ^all that.

BUT, and I've asked this before - What exactly is the protocol on Pqueue's?

I've got an enormous PQ. Is it convention to try to trim it? I always figured killing vids was just a way to cover up failed sift attempts (and thus frowned upon) - but from reading some recent comments I gather that it's a desired exercise to trim the PQ?

Someone, help.

I don't think there's a protocol. It's your PQ, make it work how you want it to work. I've never understood (present company excluded) why some have gotten riled about personal queues filling up. They should change the name to "shit that didn't sift".

kronosposeidon says...

Blanky's right, throb brother. There is no protocol for PQ management. Do whatever you want with yours, up to and including nothing. Personally I'm not a big fan of the PQ, but I know I'm in the distinct minority on that.

Now if you ever accidentally ingest poison and need to immediately induce vomiting, just go through blankfist's PQ. Then maybe you'll understand why I'm not a big PQ fan, except under extraordinary circumstances.

If the average votes calculation gets altered to reflect PQ'd videos, then I'll go through the whole lot and kill them all, as I'm quite happy with my average votes per video right now.

I also like that the average votes calculation is only based on sifted videos.

gwiz665 says...

I hate the PQ. It should be abolished.

By having a video in the PQ, the video is almost assuredly doomed to obscurity, since there's no good way to browse them - and no real reason to either. If the videos in a PQ were all killed, they could be sifted again at some point.

Some people like the PQ as an archive of things they like, which is all fine, but you can do that with discarded / killed videos too. Just make a playlist.

I used to be much stricter with my PQ, but I've become a little more lax as of late, so videos I don't think anyone else would sift are left there.

kronosposeidon says...

I've thought that maybe they could also include a separate stat just for sifted videos; i.e., Average Votes Per Sifted Video, the formula for which would be this:

Average Votes Per Sifted Video = Total Votes for Sifted Videos only/Sifted Videos

That then would be an accurate reflection of your Sifted video prowess. But to keep the formula the way it stands right now is both misleading and inaccurate. It's being calculated incorrectly, so the number is basically meaningless. That's why it either needs to be fixed or eliminated.
