And a lightbulb goes on!

Hey I was just thinking. I just got done looking over the Queue. I went to the Top Videos to the thousands of videos gracing this site and many that I haven't voted on. And suddenly it hit me! What if in VS 3.0 we had a box to hide all the videos you've already voted on? Just like the one in the Queue. It would mean more videos get exposed to more members quicker.

Then I could realize how pathetic my life is when I see that the Top Videos category is completely empty!

Right now it seems like the only section that has that option is the Queue. So having that option for everything on the sift would be a time saver as well as getting some old gems to surface again.

Oy! I'm not talking about the flippin' front page I'm talking abot *ALL the videos on videosift, the tab that says TOP VIDEOS. Hit the tab, pull down and select ALL and you'll see about 1800 pages of videos. THAT is what I want to narrow down!

do you really have to be so overpowering karaidl?
gorgons been around for ages, and came up with a damn good idea in my opinion.
I do realise you are young and you have a great enthusiasm for the site, but you don't have to go round acting like the Videosift police.

gorgs: i like the idea mate, surely this will be something Dag or lucky will claim is coming in v3.0

karaidl says...

Overpowering??? Sift police??? All I said was I didn't get what he was talking about. Sorry if I was the only one responding. Didn't say the idea wasn't good, in fact, I like it. All he was trying to do was explain it to me.

It's unfortunate that well over 75% of communication is non-verbal. So much is lost in text that can't be expressed in a SiftTalk format. I say we all be friends again... and all that other stuff I learned from watching Care Bears too many times.

mate it's not just this thread, it's in general. This community has been around for a while now, and it has it's own pace, people have a tendency to come and go, but generally the overall attitude is positive and honest.
I'm just telling you how I feel about this, he clearly explained himself in the original post, if you took the time to read it instead of skim it, it wouldn't have confused you.

There is currently a hide this video playlist. Sadly we are planning on scrapping that in VS 3.0 as it makes database loads prohibitively expensive in processor time per user. If any code ninjas can think of a good way to do this that is not prohibitively processor expensive we would love to hear about your ideas.

Well Ren, I make A LOT of comments, I'm not gonna deny that. Probably more than any other Sifter. But just cuz you don't doesn't make it a crime. I think I'll keep on commmenting as much as I please, and if you don't like it, tough shit.

I'm not what you would call a code monkey. Probably more like a code Neanderthal. I think I might have accidentily typed a line of C++ on a computer one day. But that's not important right now.

Forgive my ignorance but it seems to me that making the option available on a persons profile settings wouldn't burn out the processors. But like I say I don't know jack so I'm probably just making up crap.

Well maybe someday when VS becomes a Fortune 500 company. In the mean time any code wizards that could throw in suggestions. I think this would vastly improve the site and give the user a deeper experience and further engross them in their addiction to the site.

I guess playlists are implemented with an EAV table, and this is the reason it makes it very slow: you have to check in the playlist table every video, don't you?

Now, for every video you already check if the user voted it or not, and according to the result you display the voting arrows or you display the "you already voted".

Now, I guess there's another EAV table where you record votes. This table probably has fields "video_id, user_id, vote", and vote may have 3 values: not voted, upvoted, downvoted. Since you already check that table, adding a fourth value would be no problem, wouldn't it?
Well, this could mean converting the field from boolean to tinyint, if you use a db that supports booleans, but you could give it a try.

About the interface, you could add a "=" sign near the voting arrows, that behaves just like a vote, only you can change idea later and really vote it, or simply "unhide" it. Also an option in the preferences to show anyway hidden videos would be nice.
