Thousands of Egyptian protesters force police to retreat

EMPIRE says...

The living conditions in these places, and the utter disregard for basic human rights and a working healthy democracy, are obviously at the root of all these protests we're seeing, and I do hope start spreading like wildfire into neighbouring countries where the same problems exist.
The conditions are the motive.
But I do believe that the internet/social networks/wiki leaks/television are the tools that are helping these revolutions take place. Go new media/information transparency.

Payback, let's say you've got kids and are about to feed your new baby some formula but for some reason it sprouts demon wings and is now circling the bedroom ceiling, its head turned sideways, shouting the chants of gods long dead. Do you shrug your shoulders, grab a stepladder and immediately shove the spoon into one of its 5 new mouths? Or do you stand back in stupefied wonder before coming up with a plan that may or may not involve a butterfly net and pruning shears?
My reading of your comment is that that people should not hesitate before aiming a hose at a tornado. I love your comments, but in this case I'd argue that the situation is truly and perversely fucked enough (and outside the realm of their normal experience) to make a slow response a little more understandable.

Oranges to apples. If one of YOUR imaginary kids suddenly proclaimed they were a demon and grabbed a pair of scissors and said their sister/brother must die. Would you go grab the camera or try to disarm them?

Any firefighter will have at least a passing knowledge of -albeit rare, but not undocumented- "fire whirls" which are observed mostly during wildfires.

I haven't found much on Google about Spontaneous Infant Demonification.

No. You can prove they pissed in your water. That's ample. If someone is dumping pollutants into that water, you could also prove that and seek damages. Same with pollutants in the air. You always have to mitigate damages. Let's be reasonable, please.

Then why can't I say "all carbon emissions beyond a certain amount cause damage", and then set up a system of permits for emissions that are sold at auction (and tradeable thereafter), and then charge people who emit more carbon than they have permits for with theft (or vandalism or reckless endangerment, etc.)?

That's cap & trade in a nutshell.

Speculation. A cost-effective way to discredit environmental movements is to pick on Gore? And, is it just insidious right-wing political groups? Maybe draw a dastardly twisty mustache on these shadowy groups while you're at it. The founder of the weather channel is evil! Kill him with fire!

Dude, you're the one who brought up Al Gore's legal situation into a conversation about the environment. Clearly you thought that was germane somehow. I don't, but it's a totally standard political tactic to engage in ad hominem attacks like that.

It's such a well-worn tactic that it's become running gag on left-wing blogs to title any link to a news story about the effects of global warming "Al Gore is Fat."

Oh, and before I forget, here's another lawsuit I would expect a libertarian to endorse: the Pakistani people filing a class-action lawsuit against every major energy company for the damages caused by their recent flooding.

Another: Russia does a class-action lawsuit against every major energy company for the damages caused by their outbreak of wildfires.

A final thought, all the wildlife killed by the BP oil spill, who's got standing to sue for damages for them? For that matter, what's the settlement value for a Brown Pelican or a sea turtle? What if some species was made extinct by it?

Ha! Let's face it real buttons are better.

But I've finally caved and got an HTC Wildfire. Very nice but the major problem is I'm scared about losing or dropping it. My old Nokia was just a tool that got the job done and fitted in my jeans. This new thing with it's lovely screen - well screen protectors and a case are on the way. I wonder if it will be more trouble than it's worth.

Rep. Grayson on the Christian Right's "Pact with the Devil"

volumptuous says...

WP: Never in the history of this country has there been a "limited government" GOP. Never. Not once. They never "abandoned" the idea, because they never cared for it in the first place. In fact, they have not only believed in the opposite, but their policies have always been the exact opposite. In my lifetime, government grows like wildfire every time there's a GOP preznit. Defecits blow up, more and bigger government intrudes on our lives, and bits of the constitution are erased.

I do not understand where this fantasy GOP party you crave for, exists. It has never happened before, so where does this dream come from?

Sorry to be redundant, but it's hard to overstate how brilliant a marketing move this was. Cost = 1 car, and then the video sharing networks will spread this like wildfire. And not to be completely cynical, it's also simply a nice gesture to this poor guy.

Bush Was Warned About Katrina

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Winstonfield, when you're the head of an organization, any disaster is ultimately your fault.

Bush wasn't President of New Orleans. Local disaster preparedness is not the responsibility of the federal government. That falls primarily at the state and local level, with the federal government doing 'advise and consent' stuff (when requested).

But let's use your logic for a second. California. According to your logic, the current wildfires taking place are Obama's fault. All the property damage is Obama's fault... Any people that die were personally killed by Obama... Blah blah blah - it's a ridiculous way of thinking and I don't ascribe to it. The fact that New Orleans wasn't prepared for a hurricane of Katrina's scope wasn't Bush's 'fault' - and it isn't Obama's 'fault' that Los Angeles isn't prepared for a wildfire of the current scope.

The repair and maintainance of the levees was the responsibility Ray Nagin. It was also his job to evacuate the thousands and thousands who were still there when the storm hit (he was too busy commandeering rescue vehicles to clear out his personal belongings). The requests for federal relief and administration of said relief was the responsibility of governor Blanco. The only thing FEMA does is roll in with a big pile of trucks full of supplies and materiel. It was Bush's fault that the first initial relief was too small, but it was Nagin and Blanco who set the table and created the dynamic which made the initial supplies insufficient.

No other FEMA effort in a long time needed even a tenth of what New Orleans needed. How could FEMA have possibly projected the scope of the need until it was already happening? The relief order was signed on the 28th. Katrina hit on the 29th. The damage and scope of the need wasn't apparent until August 30 and the beginning of September. As I said... There's a lot of blame to go around, but to pretend this was all "Bush's" fault is nothing more than neolib quackery.
