Ants building "bridge" to attack wasp nest

serosmeg jokingly says...

If they don't expend their budgeted construction worker ants for 2018, their 2019 ant budget will be reduced by the queen. So they built an unnecessary 10 foot long bridge to go 3 feet.

Wha?

Why didn't they just walk directly to it across the ceiling?

Doctors Urge Americans: GO VEGAN!

transmorpher says...

Well of course - part of "responsible medicine" is not to use vivisection just because it's cheaper - especially when the results aren't as good as using computer models, lab work and training dummies or actual human cadavers - since they're not training doctors to be vets.

I suspect that person is a new vegan, hence the passion, but surely you're not for unnecessary animal suffering? Let alone if it's going to make your doctor less capable when it's your turn to be treated.

Regardless you can't take a random comment and decide that it's a spokes person for the PCRM. That to me suggests you're looking for reasons to dismiss the good advice, that benefits you and the greater world.

eric3579 said:

Really? That's what you're going with as a response? ....You're adorable.

At least in your outrage you are an honest representation of what the PCRM is really about.

Who Is America? (2018) | First Look | Sacha Baron Cohen SHOW

ChaosEngine says...

Ok, I gave it another go.

Jesus fucking christ.... you're right. It's still not that funny, but it is terrifying. That asshole laughing at the "it's not rape if it's your wife" gag? I think I could be pro-gun just in the hope that someone shoots that motherfucker.

To be honest, at this stage, I just found the accent and makeup distracting. It's unnecessary. You could probably just talk to these guys and they would say the same shit. No false persona required.

Ok, the bit about the kids being able to see in slow motion and the "cardi b neural pathway to the wiz khalifa" did make me laugh.

I agree with you, I reluctantly watched this because my opinion of Sacha's other stuff has been the same. You fish long enough and edit enough and you can get a lot of stuff together making people look stupid. I've found I really don't enjoy most of his previous schticks because of this.

This bit is different if you watch the last half. This isn't comedy style funny, but rather in it's prime Daily Show laugh instead of cry funny. I like this BECAUSE it has the potential to ruin people's careers, and normally that's what I've hated about Sacha's schticks before.

However, getting lobbyists, and then elected congressmen to advocate on camera for getting school children as young as 4-5 armed in schools helps society. If we can identify people this monstrous, compromised or willing to pander and get some of them out of office, that's good.

Liberal Redneck - Nuclear Dealbreaker

bobknight33 says...

@vil
@StukaFox
@wtfcaniuse

Obama made this mess, not our government, not Trump.

Donald Trump isn’t ripping up a treaty, he’s walking away from Barack Obama’s personal pledge. President Obama made a deal with Iran without support from Congress. Trump is pulling out of President Obama’s personal commitment, and he doesn’t need Congress’s support to do” it because Congress had nothing to do with authorizing this.

Iran can’t violate because they never signed it! Therefore, technically they’re incapable of violating. This is just a set of political documents put forth by Obama, never ratified by the Senate, not signed by the Iranians.

Iranian President Hassan Rowhani opposes a parliamentary vote on the nuclear deal reached because terms of the agreement would turn into legal obligations if passed by lawmakers. “If the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is sent to (and passed by) parliament, it will create an obligation for the government. it will mean the president, who has not signed it so far, will have to sign it,” Rowhani said. “Why should we place an unnecessary legal restriction on the Iranian people?”

2015 — in the Obama State Department, “The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),” said that the Iran deal, “is not a treaty or an executive agreement, and is not a signed document…” It was the final document.

In Saturn's Rings 8K (Narrated by LeVar Burton) 2018 Trailer

kir_mokum says...

even as a file, it would probably chug here and there, depending on the compression and how beefy your machine is. 8K is fucking HUGE and SO unnecessary unless you have an imax theatre in your living room.

ant said:

You could always download it. Now, the question can you play it smoothly? None of my old computers can, but then I don't even have 4K yet. I just got 1080 HD in late 2014.

Fans react to Black Panther poster

spawnflagger says...

I saw it, it was good. I thought Thor: Ragnarok was more fun, but that was also meant to be humorous. This is up there with Captain America: Civil War for me (among Marvel movies).

The dumbest thing in Black Panther were the armored rhinos. Totally unnecessary.

Quick D: Invisible Box Challenge

man, he worked way harder than he needed to. the green on the box was insufficient and rendered useless and tracking markers were also unnecessary.

Boat Wreck On The Columbia River

Ickster says...

From the article ant linked to:

Larsen [the 75 year-old boat driver], a Roseburg resident, told The Oregonian/OregonLive by phone Friday that he wasn’t using his cellphone while driving his Bayliner and referred to such allegations as “fake news.” Larsen also said a lawsuit seemed unnecessary because the people in the Weldcraft weren’t hurt badly.

Christ, what an asshole.

Dashcam Video Of Alabama Cop Who Shot Man Holding His Wallet

robbersdog49 says...

Watching this as a brit it makes my blood boil.

I get why the cop shot him. The way he got out of the car and was holding his wallet it really did look like it could be a gun aimed at the officer. In a country where the person getting out of the car could well be carrying a gun that's a reasonable response from the officer. I'm with that. I get it.

I don't understand how anyone thinks that all this is OK though. This would never have happened in the UK, or any other country where guns are carefully controlled. Having guns rife in the country leads to so much shit like this. So many unnecessary deaths. All these lives are worth less than 'I want to carry a gun'. It's madness, and I don't understand how you can't see that.

This cop did nothing wrong, it's the only reasonable response to that situation where there's guns everywhere. You guys need to get rid of the guns. Really.

Officer disciplined after getting angry over White Privilege

ChaosEngine says...

Sorry, re-reading that, it is badly worded. I meant I don't understand what upset him so much that he was disciplined for it.

But that leads back to my whole point about lack of context.

We don't know (from this video) WHY she talked about white male privilege and whether it was warranted, and equally, I don't understand why he reacted the way he did.

So, doing some research on this, it turns out that, when presented with the statistic that transgender people are 3.32 times more likely to experience police violence, he said "My wife has never been part of police violence, Most of the people that I know have never accused the police of violence. So I guess I don't get where that statistic comes from."

Ok, let's put the white privilege thing aside for a second. Can we all agree that that is a fucking dumb arse response? "People in Africa are starving." "Nonsense, I just had a cheeseburger". FFS.

It's at that point that Weber says "it's because of your white male privilege".

Now whether that response was merited is debatable. Personally, I feel like it's probably uncalled for, but I can also see where she's coming from.

Either way, it certainly doesn't merit Weber being put on administrative leave. As for the response, it was definitely unnecessary, but it was also not THAT bad.

I fail to see why the whole thing needed to go to disciplinary proceedings at all, when it could have been sorted out by making them both sit down and talk like grown-ups.

newtboy said:

Saying white privilege exists may be stating a sociological fact, but saying someone is incapable of comprehension because of their male white privilege is a racist (and sexist) insulting dismissive statement, particularly when in response to a basic statistical question.

I'm confused on what you mean in your last sentence....do you mean it's hard to see why he got so upset because they disciplined him, or hard to see why he got so upset that he had to be disciplined?

Colbert To Trump: 'Doing Nothing Is Cowardice'

scheherazade says...

Precisely. They have those guns in their hands, and don't shoot people.

The only things that I ding Hillary on are :

- Being a part of installing missile launchers on Russia's eastern border, and giving the asinine explanation that it's "to defend against Iran". Antagonizing Russia is so unnecessary and so old. I swear some people are just thirsty for the cold war to return.

- Cheating with the DNC in the primaries and screwing Bernie out of a win... who by the way could have carried the general election against carrot head. I'd rather have the Bern than either a sellout or a clown.

One side sees the other as paranoid.
The other side sees the first as short sighted.

I don't expect to be in a crash, I still prefer to wear a seat belt. But by all means, I don't care if someone chooses not to.

And yet, gun laws DEMONSTRABLY work in other countries. There are plenty of other countries with high gun ownership rates (Canada, for instance), but nowhere outside the 3rd world has anything like the gun-related death rate of the US.

Meanwhile, you are caught up in some ridiculous fantasy where you save America from imaginary Hitler.

Aikido - Hiromi Matsuoka

Jinx says...

Yeah, he isn't resisting much and it does make her look stronger and the throws look cleaner than they really would in reality... there is an element of choreography, but in most cases it's for practical purposes, to avoid unnecessary injury, not for aesthetics.

But then i quite like the aesthetics too. It's dancing. I think I always enjoyed Ju Jitsu more for the workout, history and artistry of it than for actual self defence.

mxxcon said:

I'd like to see something like this done to a person who doesn't know Aikido.
I'm not saying it's not real or anything like that. But wondering if the guy is flying all over the place partly to make it look better because he knows "what's coming". Where as if these moves were to be performed on an untrained person would not look as spectacular.
