The Face on the Moon - Neil deGrasse Tyson

cloudballoon says...

I always get the impression that Neil deGrasse Tyson come on every TV shows right after inhaling liters of nitrogen.

I prefer Bill Nye.

Wow Dick Tracy on the watch.
Thanks Dick.

You don't work do you ?
You have way too much time that you waste on slanted/ fake stories.

You must be glued to the Jan 6 hearings.
Stupid but still better than any TV show.

Ruh roe….after being subpoenaed, the secret service now says they still have the text messages from Jan 5-6 that they previously told the committee were all erased permanently. Funny how the story changed 100% only AFTER they were subpoenaed. Not good for insurrectionists. Also horrific for the reputation of the secret service who now looks like a deep state political tool for Trump.

Also being reported Trump intends to announce he’s running for president again before the midterms, despite the RNC and all cons up for election begging him not to. Sources say he’s outraged at the dozens of criminal and civil cases he’s facing and wants to use the office to shield himself from prosecution, and that’s his main concern and goal right now. Expecting another red tsunami? Lol.

New Rule: Make America Grind Again

newtboy says...

He is, but he is clear that he thinks Islam is the worst, most violent misogynistic and intolerant. I say that’s equally true of all religions at different times.

While I do like that he can see when his team goes off the deep end, where that line lies has steadily moved to the right as he aged. I’ve been watching him since before he had a tv show. I live in CA, and I don’t have the issues he complains most about….of course I don’t live in the most expensive, most regulated county in CA like he does. He complained for years about getting permits for his solar system and blamed the liberal government, I got my permits in one day with no issue at all.

My biggest peeve is that, even though he’s been a professional comedian for over 40 years, he still doesn’t understand that a groan/clap is approval for a joke in bad taste or particularly pointed. It bugs the shit out of me when he gets mad his crowd groaned while applauding and laughing.

We actually started HBO to watch him there…but he’s changed so much we often don’t bother anymore. I rarely recognize his panel anymore too. New Rules is definitely the highlight of the show these days.

I think he's against all religions, hence making Religulous.

I like him because he's old-school liberal, and not afraid to call out some of the extreme-left insanity of new-school liberals. Probably he sees it more because he lives in CA.

But I don't subscribe to HBO, and only watch his "New Rules" or monolog clips on YouTube (when they're not already 'sifted, of course)

How Women Are Written In Sci-Fi Movies

newtboy says...

The animated Tv show from the 80's, of course. The movie was a disappointment.

I mention it because Aeon, the female scientist/superspy/clone, is capable of doing her job and being nice....at least nice to those not trying to kill her. Capable of being impossibly good at her job and being a loving, caring partner. Capable of unraveling the labyrinthine, convoluted, outrageously sci-fi conspiracies while wearing heels and latex and looking sexy as Hell doing it.
If Ripley is the exception to the rule, what is Aeon, who ignores all these rules?

the niche TV show or the terrible movie that is it's own trope? (aeon flux, ultraviolet, atomic blonde, lucy, GitS (the shitty scar jo one), resident evil, anna...)

Mom arrested after posing as 7th grade daughter in school

JiggaJonson says...

@newtboy just fyi, maroon, i recently learned is a racial epithet.

I believe I learned the term from Bugs Bunny "What a maroon!"

But https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maroons apparently it's just another way to make fun of people with a lot of pigment in their skin. I only realized this when I heard it used as an actual insult. "Fuckin maroon." This is, consequently why maroon as a color is brownish/redish (to resemble the skin of the people that are on lonely islands aka people who have been "marooned")

I have no doubt that you didn't know this ahead of time, but just know it going forward. I don't think that's what you meant, and you wouldn't want to be misunderstood.

EDIT See also, art like this statue titled "Maroons surprised by dogs" (1893) (Brussels) by Louis Samain. Note the fetters on the hands and feet: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/ff/Wikibruz23.jpg (Pretty fucked up eh?)

EDIT 2 I think I also know the word from various TV show episode titles that are some version of "Marooned" when people become stranded.

==============================

EDIT 3 Oh yeah, and this dumbass. What did she think would happen? She didn't "Just walk in" she wore a disguise elaborate enough she filmed her "setup" that took long enough that it required montage-like speed in post. Not to mention she had to use her daughter's school id to get in.

Going through a makeover/disguise
Learning and following your daughter's schedule
Using your daughter's student ID

DOES NOT = just walking in

Marion Stokes - The Woman Who Recorded Everything

moonsammy says...

What a great story! My ex was a huge fan of the "Hoarders" type tv shows, and I always felt they were incredibly sad, exploitative shows. Entertaining sure, but in the same way as rubbernecking at a bad car accident. I'm really happy this woman was able to channel her hoarding mentality in such a societally beneficial manner. I grew up Catholic so have always had an affinity for the concept of saints - I feel she qualifies as a secular American saint.

If you liked this short video, I recommend you watch the TV show Counterpart, which explores similar ideas, but with only 1 parallel universe, and some people can travel between them. J.K. Simmons really shines, probably his best role(s).

Pigeon Eating Catfish

Mystic95Z says...

Yeah I really wanted to see a pigeon eating a catfish lol. I remember seeing this on one of the nature tv shows quite some time back so I knew I was in for disappointment....

Narcissists and SOCIAL MEDIA

Khufu says...

If you see the behind-the-scene filming of your favourite movie or tv show it looks a bit cringy too. but it's what you see onscreen that is the subject to be judged.. I think these people are trying to do things that mimic what they see pro models/actors/musicians do in videos/photos. and it works, they try all sorts of angles and find a good shot then post it and it makes people think they are awesome and are worth following/listening too.. then they plug products and get paid. no big deal.. just the tech has gotten cheap for consumers and distribution is simple.
