How does the US general presidential election process work?

newtboy jokingly says...

Not quite.
If this was really representative of the US election process, the kids should both be trying to drowned each other and the cat should take a crap in the tub.
Dad's reaction was totally representative of the media though. Something bad happens so dad focuses in and eggs it on instead of doing anything helpful.

WONDER WOMAN Comic-Con Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

Well, at least it's not quite as desaturated as the rest of the DCU (yo, Synder! Colour is not a four letter word!)

Could be interesting, butI guess we'll have to wait and see. Has a lot of bad momentum to overcome.

the true face of gender equality

newtboy says...

*promote showing what actual gender equality looks like.
Actually, not quite equality, but a step towards it. If there was TRUE gender equality being shown here, every one of those women would have been beaten to a pulp, not just hit one single time.
If you start a fight and lose, that's 100% on you, not the one you attacked.

Bernie Sanders Explains His Reluctance To Endorse Hillary

Lawdeedaw says...

No, you make one fatal error. You are comparing Clinton supporters with Bernie supporters. That is incredibly incorrect and it makes me shudder. You should compare Clinton to Trump supporters---ie., the entire republican party has sided with him, minus a few who will vote third party. Clinton supporters are exactly like that. Bandwagon, that's me! Not to degrade them but put a D in their mouths and they are happy.

On the other hand, Bernie supporters have more integrity and are tired of the funnel-effect of the lesser of two evils bullshit whereby more evil comes to our voting booths.

So yeah, maybe 1% of Clinton supporters will be mad and vote elsewhere (Like Jill) but what, 25% of Sanders will? Yeah...not quite the same.

I don't know any more, I think those hypothetical match up poles that have Bernie beating Trump by a higher margin than Clinton don't take into account the fallout from the only way he could be nominated now, if nearly all of the super delegates decide to overturn the result of the primary. And that would seriously piss off the majority of Democratic primary voters.

If it actually went down that way, I don't think Bernie would be up in the poles given how many Clinton supporters would feel cheated and betrayed by the party. I know that's ironic since Sanders supporters already feel that way, but overturning the primary is an epic level of shenanigans that would eclipse anything done to Sanders.

The only hope for a Sanders nomination is if Clinton implodes in the next 3 weeks, like by being indicted. Otherwise I think the best he can do is what he's been saying, try to affect the party platform.

Last Week Tonight: Brexit Update

Well technically I posted this first and then the embed was updated in the other video (they're not quite the same), but it probably makes sense to just have the one so....

The Bed We've Made | Full Frontal with Samantha Bee | TBS

ChaosEngine says...

eh? not quite sure what you're trying to say, but it has nothing to do with superdelegates.

Babymech said:

"Democrats: We got here because black people are allowed to vote."

See, this is what most media misses, and it takes an entertainer like Sam Bee to give us the facts. So many news outlets try to explain what superdelegates are - and why they are - but the actual answer is simple: Superdelegates are the delegates that black people chose. I guess. Apparently. Since black people are her explanation for Clinton.

EYES IN THE SKY Trailer

Drachen_Jager says...

Well that looks utterly stupid.

So... they have bug UAVs and hummingbird UAVs, yet they're targeting the bad guys with antiques?

Also, it's not like this is some imaginary moral dilemma. US forces can, have, and will target innocent civilians WITHOUT confirmation that their actual target is on site. Hell they've attacked wedding parties and hospitals just for shits and giggles (well not quite, but "because some Afghan guy said so" is close enough).

If Meat Eaters Acted Like Vegans

eric3579 says...

I'm not quite sure what is"vegan food" but from experience if you give yourself two to three weeks to adjust to a plant based diet you will do yourself a world of good and salads taste amazing after you make the adjustment.

Personally i base my eating habits on my personal health and thus believe a plant based diet is the best way to go (as personal experience has shown me)

However i eat meat these days cuz its what's prepared around the house. However im in poorer health since (cholesterol shot through the roof and i gained back a ton of weight i had lost) ive went from plant based to animal products and more processed foods.

For me diet is all about my health. A friend said the vegans he knows have the worst most unhealthy diets hes ever seen.

I guess being vegan is all about "animal cruelty". I had been under the delusion it was about ones personal health.

ChaosEngine said:

I'm not vegan because vegan food is fucking awful. I'm prepared to live with some animal murder if it means I can avoid tofu.

The limits of how far humanity can ever travel - Kurzgesagt

gorillaman says...

It's not quite true to say it would take thousands of years to reach our nearest star. If only people weren't pussies about the small matter of exploding hundreds of nuclear bombs in the atmosphere, we could use technology that existed in the fifties to accelerate spacecraft to as much as a tenth of light speed. Proxima Centauri in a matter of decades, no problem.

There's no reason to actually do that; nothing to be learned, nothing to gain in terms of technology or resource exploitation or potential for the future, but god damn it, it would be cool.

The Most Costly Joke in History

newtboy says...

Not quite a phalanx cannon, but still nice and scary.
So helicopters have different vulnerabilities. They can hide better from electronics and stay out of range of many identified targets, but are far more vulnerable to all kinds of ground fire, including small arms.
Nice, so basically a small aircraft mounted cruise missile.

Quite a lot of nations have old soviet Shilka's which do those supercomputer calculations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-UnealTR-Y
You get within 1.5 miles of this thing, and it chews up anything that isn't jinking.
There are also variants of this thing which have missiles, and they can even shoot down other missiles to protect itself.
For those it's better to fire helicopter missiles from a low angle. Or bomb them from up very high.

Helicopters are less vulnerable because often they can fire without revealing their position. Modern missiles can be fired from as around 8km away. And they'll fire them while hovering low enough that their radar signatures can't be distinguished from the ground and surroundings. And since they are always facing the enemy their heat signature from the engines is facing away as well. (unlike a warthog that will show it's engines to the enemy as it flies up and away after an attack). Most attack helicopters have some kind of armour as well. At least in the pilot and critical sections.
Oh yes, and something really cool - the new Apache Longbow's can fire missiles that go around terrain to hit their targets! Super cool

They absolutely have disadvantages, but any decent pilot will fly their aircraft to it's advantages

Understanding The Pedophile's Brain

coolhund says...

Funny thing is, it has been proven that there are also a lot of irregularities in the brains of other criminals. So yeah... I think youre right, but not quite there yet.
Cause and effect is massively underused in our society, and the guy explained why. We tend to see things much simpler than they really are. Which is mostly the fault of religion and media (good and bad bullshit, which effectively shuts out differentiated thinking).

newtboy said:

10-15 IQ points BELOW AVERAGE?!? That means gorillas and birds may be more intelligent.

If this study is correct, and pedophilia is a brain disorder, that means by law we need to excise all pedophiles from prison and put them in treatment/mental hospitals. Suddenly, prosecuting pedophiles is a violation of the American disabilities act.
Putting people in prison/to death for physical deformities is not what we do in a free society.
I hope these findings are a step towards an effective treatment.

It does seem that we, as a society, are so disturbed by their actions that we create restrictions for them on release from prison that invariably put them back in, restrictions like where they can live, work, walk, who they can talk to, often not allowed to use computers, etc. It seems to me that if we're going to hold their crimes against them for life in that way, we should maybe simply make it a death penalty crime and quit pretending we think we can rehabilitate them when we don't really think that.

I used "it's" because I didn't want to use his or her because I didn't know if it was a boy emu or a girl emu....but now that I look at it, it does seem not quite right. hmmm
