RAGE - The Well Official Gameplay Trailer

EMPIRE says...

I've always liked Id's games, and Rage's look is pretty cool, and the characters look pretty good, but the world textures? geez... some of those look Half-Life 1 quality. I hope this was not the game running in a powerful PC with all details to full.

And after playing LA Noire, all lip sync looks terrible to me.

Duped video posts that go BIG (Engineering Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

I think you underestimate how chaotic the Sift system really is. In an ideal world the amount of votes a video gets would be proportional to some objective standard of "quality". But in reality there are a lot more factors that influence the voting procedure, such as creative naming, good tags and channel assignment, time of day/week, and just pure luck in which sifters were online right then to see it. If occasionally a video gets a lot of extra votes due to going unduped for a long time, then so be it. The new people who upvote it presumably haven't seen it before and think it deserves recognition, so it's not really gaming the system a lot.

But I try to do my part by invoking *dupeof/*isdupe as soon as possible. I don't endorse the trend of letting posts stew for a while intentionally to gather extra votes. I see VideoSift as a source for new and unseen content, and allowing reposts to linger will just turn us into Reddit.

meh. rage is going to be just another engine seller. without romero carmack is just some talented programmer, not a game designer.

I've never really drank the Romero Coolaid. Romero needs to be surrounded by a highly critical team who will prevent him from putting every stupid idea he has into a game, regardless of whether or not it works well. His post-id career really illustrates this point.

Carmack, as far as I can remember, has never been a designer on any of their games.

Japanese Game Show - Stare at Pretty Girl Longest

Bidouleroux says...

They're trying to find who amongst a bunch of reputedly "pure" public personalities will look the longest in total while they wait for the elevator doors to close. So yeah, it's not like they really win anything except being made fun of. But that's the whole point of the show : finding a bunch of useless facts about public personalities in a myriad of crazy categories. Don't get me wrong though, it's pretty damn funny, even more so when you understand Japanese.

By the way, it's not a game show but more of a parody award show. Also, the segment in question is a classic Japanese "candid camera" type thing.

President Truman's Ultimatum to Japan (before Hiroshima)

honkeytonk73 says...

The general Japanese civilian population at the time was poor, starving and consisted mostly old men, women, and children. All males of 'fighting age' or capacity were either dead, or in the military. The citizenry's weapons of choice that were available to them were... brooms, shovels, and sticks. This doesn't overshadow the threat the emperor, the empire and his military machine posed. However, this doesn't negate the fact that the country was already defeated by the time the A-bombs were dropped. The majority killed by the A-bombs were civilians. Old men. Women. Children. The city of Nagasaki was a historical 'symbolic' international trade port for Japan for hundreds of years. Nagasaki even had a 'foreign quarter' reserved 'gaijin'. At the time the A-bomb was dropped, there was a POW camp in the city. Populated with both American and Australian POWs. Most were killed by the A-bomb. Nagasaki and Hiroshima were symbolic targets. Not only was it to signal a thorough and resounding crush of a defeated foe, it was a symbol to the world stating "don't tread on me".

I am not making a pro/anti A-bomb point here. I am just expressing known historical fact. War in all it's forms is horrible. It is not a game. People die. Innocent people die. It isn't a video game. No one should ever rush to war. Nor should anyone run an empire based on an ideology of military domination such as was seen by both German and Japan.

The US should learn from history and remember it's past. Hubris is what is the greatest threat to US power now. Not 'terrorism'.. yet most are still too blind to realize this.

A Ball Thrown Back 100 km/h From A Truck Moving 100 km/h

gwiz665 says...

Resubmitting a dead video is not the way to do it. It will then be a dupe and need to be dupeoffed. Dead videos are not free game, only discarded or killed videos can be submitted without being dupes. (Obviously you can submit something that's already on here, but it will be considered a dupe.)

Zero Punctuation: E3 2010

Xaielao says...

>> ^Beefpile:

I think there are quite a few 'actual gamers' who give a shit about Zelda, Kid Icarus, etc. In fact I'd say only people who have given a shit about video games for a very long time even know who Kid Icarus is or why he needs a new game.
I agree though that the pc's showing was awesome. Absolutely can't wait for Rage or Crysis 2! As for the other consoles.... at least they have Mortal Kombat 9. Better than nothing.
>> ^Xaielao:
E3 this year for consoles was shit.. utter shit. Each of the 'big 3' had reveals that no actual gamer gives a shit about. Again.. absolute shit.
PC gaming was pretty solid however, and that is nice to see for a change.

I meant rather the big three console conferences, not individual games themselves. And yes we really don't need another zelda every six months do we? Now Kid Icarus sounds interesting but knowing these companies anymore it will be shit compared to the original. But who knows.

Matt Reveals the Hoax is a Hoax at MacWorld

mxxcon says...

for those that needs context for this video:

On 11 December 2008, Matt Harding sarcastically revealed at the Entertainment Gathering that the videos were a hoax and that he is an actor, not a game designer, and the videos were made using animatronic puppets and extensive video editing. A month later, during the MacWorld convention, Matt revealed the "hoax about the hoax" and joked about the fact many people took it seriously and the outrage it caused. He also made it very clear that the videos he made were indeed 100% real.

Monkey Island theme over the years

spoco2 says...

Pffft for Adlib. It was surpassed very quickly in sound quality. The Gravis Ultrasound and the like were far superior in sound.

It's not like games don't use iMuse like systems today, they do... I can't remember examples, but I do notice it from time to time. I do remember back though and remember what a huge deal it was that the iMuse system dynamically changed things, it was huge at the time.

Americans - Where to live when the USA economy collapses

GeeSussFreeK says...

Why so much hate? Do y'all not war game things out ever? That is mostly what I do in life, even for the relatively unfathomably. I would say I would subscribe off of most of what he said. I don't think I could provide a shelter for myself enough to be suitable in hard winters. I also wouldn't be smart enough to figure out how to make a well, I would have to use surface water, so in the winter that is a big deal as well. Even more so if it is frozen but without snow, then you have to go jab off parts of frozen ice and thaw it which is a pain and time that I am not gathering food.

Unlikely, maybe, but he wasn't even selling it as a fear mongering perspective, more like a very through war gaming.
