Dara O'Briain - That's How You Sell Sh*t To Men

On the other hand what proportion of regular books deserve the respect that literature gets?>> ^mentality:

I love how everybody gets the "boss battle" joke. Gaming sure has gone mainstream.

Yeah, that impressed me. I wonder if he second guessed it before using it. "Eh, do people get this stuff now?"
I've known these days were coming since I was a child, and it's not done yet. Gaming still isn't respected as an art form the way literature is. Newer mediums like photography and comics have gotten that respect, but not yet games. Some day.

Eh. Only a small handful of comic books deserve the same level of respect as literature, just like only a small handful of games deserve the same level of respect as art. The vast majority of games, especially the popular ones, are still juvenile blockbusters steeped in industry conventions that cannot transcend expectations for the medium.

left 4 dead 2- Charger sneak attack at the start

KnivesOut says...

>> ^Kevlar:

The "normal" (meaning cheap but not outside game rules) way this is done in Versus mode (at least as far as I do it and normally see it done) is to spawn the Charger on the roof the instant the first survivor runs into the building, thus leaving the 'safe room' which consists of the outside area. If the team is unprepared for such an attack or if one person simply runs ahead (which allows the SI to spawn), you can immediately jump down and charge anyone still standing outside and picking up weapons/kits off the pier and into the ocean. Using a Jockey or a Smoker to hold the person still also helps, or helps to drag them back into position for the death charge. However, I've never seen the death charge occur while the opening intro is still going - that shouldn't technically be possible due to everyone still being in the safe room and thus disallowing the charger spawn.

Thanks for dropping some science.

Unlimited Detail: Potential Next-Gen Graphics Technology?

Stormsinger says...

You invoke the "impossible" clause to much - if you are a software developer (like I) I hope you start channelling more Kevin Garnett.

HOWEVER...I happen to agree that this is all too good to be true, and there doesn't seem to be anyway around doing MASSIVE amounts of calculations. I hope to be proved wrong.
Also if its been languishing for years, its almost certainly bullshit: games developers appropriate new technology with gusto from what I have seen.

Nope, not a game developer any longer and never a 3D programmer, as I said (I'm a database guy), I just worked alongside them. But I do clearly remember them complaining about the lack of memory bandwidth to the card, which really does imply that replacing polygons with points is going to make things worse rather than better.

I'll certainly agree with you on the last two points. If it sounds too good to be true...and all that.

How DMCA abuse could affect YOU!

This whole thing could have and should have been avoided. If the little prik was prosecuted the first time, there would have been no need for all the drama. You can not play games with these kind of people because they have no problem cheating to win. And that is exactly what happened - No winners, many losers, and possibly more to come.

Why are you assuming that I only feel this way about the government? I feel the exact same way about the criminally wealthy. Enron executives who steal money are no less sleazy than government officials who do the same.

I'm speaking out against the government, for one, because many people think their actions are sanctioned (whereas most already agree that the criminally wealthy's actions are not sanctioned). For two, I'm a lot more concerned with the government because they don't steal money by clever fraud schemes, or taking advantage of the under-informed, or backhanded actions - they walk in the front door with gun in hand and steal right in front of your face. Resistance is not an option, because the amount of violence is overwhelming.

To me, that is infinitely more scary. When I sleep at night, I don't fear a banker coming up with an elaborate fraud scheme to steal my savings, I fear someone kicking down my front door and robbing me at gunpoint. Knowing that they might have a "search warrant" doesn't help me sleep any better.

As Farhad2000 mentioned, 1/3 of every dollar in private healthcare ends up in the hands of someone who is gaming the system, and I believe it. They steal because they don't think we are equal, that they are entitled to the fruits of our labor because we are somehow different, below them. Private, non-governmental people who are rotten criminals, who managed to get in the position of stealing 30 cents of every healthcare dollar by lobbying rotten criminals in the legislature. They are, in effect, not only gaming us, but those in government as well - because their share is much larger than the bribes and lobby dollars the government officials receive.

What scares me, is you see this situation where private criminals are stealing billions of dollars, an undeniable situation; and what you propose is to replace these private criminals with public criminals. Public officials who are in an even easier position to steal billions of dollars, who have a vastly larger amount of physical violence at their disposal.

That is scary, and I don't think it solves anything.

In Mexico, the government decided to combat drug smuggling by clamping down on the borders and arresting leaders in the crime syndicate. The result? A violent power vacuum which resulted in ritualistic revenge killings, mass-beheadings, and the assassinations of several public figures. Then, when they couldn't earn money through smuggling, they turned to kidnapping. Instead of clandestine smuggling, the public now has to cope with over 500 kidnappings a month - many in broad daylight - where 1 in 7 kidnap victims are murdered. These types of people don't just quit, they find new ways to steal.

You create a power vacuum in the healthcare industry and what do you think is gonna happen, these criminals who have been stealing billions of dollars are just gonna retire, or better yet, go to college and decide to pursue a legitimate line of work? Get a degree and go to some job interviews? Give up a life stealing billions a year for 60 hours a week slaving in the ER? No, they will probably just run for office.

These people will never work for a living because they don't think we are equal.

Angry Video Game Nerd: Plumbers Don't Wear Ties

shadowonline says...

Brilliant! er, this video that is... not the game.

A bit of background info on the name of the "game". It is called Plumbers Don't Wear Ties because only plumbers get the hot chicks in the end, and "suits" or in this case "Ties", you know, the bosses, are all psychopaths.... but, this "plumber" is not really a plumber as such (the ones that fix drains) because he is wearing a tie and is posing as a plumber who rescues chicks from "ties" because he knows this fact that plumbers get all the chicks and chicks think all plumbers are good guys. Sooooo, this girl is fucked (both kinds)either way because she gets sucked in and what you didn't see, is the rape and torture that followed once he got her home and in to his dungeon. So in the end, the game is a sick joke and you are the fool because no matter what you can not save the girl.

EDIT: This also explains why our "plumber" is waiting in the car park all that time... he is a predator!

The Errors We Make In Judging The Value of Things : Ted Talk

Skeeve says...

>> ^messenger:
True story: Two guys I know like to play a video screen game together at a particular bar. If you win up to a certain level, you receive a two free pitchers of beer. The pitchers of beer normally cost $30. In their experience, it takes about two hours and $40 worth of quarters to win the beer. Occasionally they win with less money in less time, and occasionally they give up before they win and forfeit all their money. Are they retards for playing it?
No. They would have bought the beer anyway, and whatever extra money is worth the fun they have playing the game together. They say, "It's $40 for the fun and conversation together, and the beer is free." To my eye, it's exactly the same with the lottery. As the questioner said towards the end of the vid, lottery players don't actually believe they're going to win. It's an entertainment cost because it makes them feel good, for whatever reason.

I realize I'm commenting on an old post, but I think you just proved that you misunderstand Gilbert's use of the lottery as an example. The two guys you know have an exponentially higher chance of making money, or at the very least, breaking even than people who play the lottery. Gilbert is referring to lotteries that have astronomical odds of winning, not a game at a bar that one can win relatively frequently.

Also, you are right that he didn't include expected utility in this talk, but he did say it was a simplified version and I know he would take the utility into account in his research. Further, Gilbert's other work shows that, after 6 months, a lottery winner's level of happiness is about the same as a parapalegic's level of happiness 6 months after they lose the use of their legs. Utility may be nice, but if your level of happiness after 6 months is exactly the same, maybe, in a purely logical sense, the lottery is still just a stupidity tax.

Too bad this entire thing is CGI and not in-game footage. It's an artist's rendering of what the game MIGHT be similar to.

Yeah, as fake as it gets
They should come back when they actually have some gameplay to show us.
Or just make a cinematic trailer.
Fake gameplay doesn't interest me.

Says "In-Game Footage" in the trailer. Downvote from me for both of you.

No. I wouldn't torture his innocent daughter. Absolutely not.
What do you mean when you say, "not everything has a price?"

My point is that morality is not a game of checks and balances as you claim. There are certain moral absolutes. As such, this whole discussion about means to an end is, to me at least, moot.
