Big Think: John Cleese on Being Offended

enoch says...

@Imagoamin

i can agree with your basic premise:free speech can have consequences in the form of MORE speech.

you are totally free to espouse the most ridiculous,self-centered narcissistic cry-baby drivel you like, and i am totally free to ridicule you as the cry-baby bed-wetter you are behaving like.

the problems arise when that interaction is then seen as "harassment" and a defamation of the constantly oppressed group of bed-wetters.how dare i slander such a tender group! havent they suffered enough?

nobody is saying that one group is excused from free speech or from criticism, and most people would agree that if you yell FIRE in a room and cause a panic when there was no fire, there should be consequences for your actions.

what people ARE saying is that making certain words unacceptable, therefore changing the very language we use to express, convey and deliver complex thoughts, feelings and imaginings is counter-productive.made further so when an abstract art form such as comedy is so easily taken out of context to further an agenda.

remember #cancelcolbert?

the comedy and satire was totally lost on that over-privileged nitwit suey park.she instead focused on a single element of his monologue and chose to be offended, without even considering the larger implications of the humor in colberts bit.

does she have a right to be offended?of course.
does she have a right to be outraged and start a twitter campaign to shut down colberts show?yep..she sure does.

and we have the right to absolutely take her inane, and un-self-aware false campaign for justice to task, and ridicule her relentlessly.

because bad ideas, poor understandings and judgements dressed up as social justice SHOULD be ridiculed for the stupidity they represent.

as for your assertion that comedians are thin skinned,or need to grow a thicker skin,i think you have no idea what you are fucking talking about.you ever spoke in public? in front of crowd?

believe me...you grow thick skin, and fast, until it becomes titanium.

i see no further reason to beat that particular horse but just look up chris rock, seinfeld, louis ck ,bill burr, joe rogan.they all lay out quite clearly why universities are a dead zone for comedy.

because the extreme end of social justice warriors are humorless cunts.

Hey! We got on the same page!

I did put "need" in quotes, because I am quoting people. Not to be pedantic. Ha.

Yes to everything else. Communicating. It is a bitch. English. Dang. And doing it via the internet? It is less communicating and more dueling monologues.

I think we did really well, though, over all, @newtboy. Thanks for sticking in with me.

Liana Kerzner - An Honest Look At Women in Games

Explain, enoch, for I was raised on the "Dog and Pony Show" metaphor. The same, right?

Regardless, intelligent people know the score, (equality being the goal) and this is just rumination for the rest of us stuck on the elementary belief system.
I do have some sympathy for her when it comes to the situation of an agreeable ally who honestly and evenly criticizes their peers. It's sad that she was attacked by the group she's commenting on just for pointing out valid points, when an alternate female perspective is the best thing for them.

If you're interested in the commentary it's worth a listen, but it's just counterpoint and monologue to an ongoing civil argument that most have already formed an opinion about.

The thing here is, I don't have a bias about her, I barely have an opinion. I originally commented because you claimed she cut off her comments and canceled appearances solely to silence descent from her monologue. I disagree completely on that point, especially since she didn't cancel other public events afterwards, and I provided evidence that she had repeated disgusting, specific death and rape threats, giving her a legitimate reason to stop anonymous discussions online or to not have a public appearance where guns are 100%allowed even when specific death threats have been made about the specific event. EDIT: She even went so far as to petition the police to provide security and disallow firearms in the auditorium so she could continue with the scheduled appearance, but they steadfastly refused, THEN she canceled.
...But you ignore those threats and claim it was only about 'censorship' or 'silencing debate' because of your bias, your mind is made up, you think that she's wrong no matter how much evidence I put in front of you that there were other legitimate reasons for her actions. I did admit I was wrong about the police instructing her to cancel the appearance, but I still think it was the right thing to do (and I still can't believe the police actions in that instance...insane!).

As for her being anti sex worker, I have no opinion, I don't know, that's why I want evidence if I'm to have an opinion about her feeling on that subject. It seems wrong that someone who claims to be feminist would not see sex workers as empowered women, and I need to be convinced of something so illogical before I believe it, even about someone I don't' have a good overall opinion about....to convince me I need to hear from HER that those are her feelings about those women. If that's the case, it's terrible, but she's a terrible feminist, so no big surprise....I'm just not convinced yet....either way.

Again, IF her anti-sex worker stance is true, and publicly known (especially by sex workers) then this video was just a trolling attempt by the sex workers, because they know Sarkeesian is not a supporter!

You're bias.

Your mind is made up.

You think that I'm wrong.

No matter how much evidence I plop in front of you.

It's okay. You're only human.

"Convenience Store" sketch from Kids in the Hall

ulysses1904 says...

Yeah none of their monologues ever worked for me. They were all just filler and none of them were memorable like the sketches. I saw them in Boston in 2000 on their first reunion tour. We drove through a freakin blizzard to get there but that made it that much more special. We thought they were done for good after 1994 so it was cool to see them.

Anything they have done since is painful to watch so I bought the complete series on DVD and just skip the monologues.

SquidCap said:

I really should make my edited version of the series.. Cut out every single Scott Thompson gay monologue out. Not because i hate gays or Scott but having a 7 minute touching monologue in the middle of 20 minute comedy sketch show just does not work. Plus i hate the fake lisp, no matter if it's woman or man.
