'Was that disruptive?': congressman "blasts" Trump official

'Was that disruptive?': congressman "blasts" Trump official

newtboy says...

My guess was it refers to the energy involved, so "louder" is the wrong word. I had no idea under water and air decibels are completely different measurements. The science of underwater sound is convoluted and confusing.

I think it kind of depends on what he means by 16,000x louder? If he's talking in decibels, then it's already a logarithmic scale, so 16,000x times higher output amplitude is about 84db? higher (which is no joke) not quite sure on the maths there. 16,000db higher is basically impossible unless we are talking a supernova or something.

That puts it at over 204db which is apparently the same volume as the Saturn V launch. Which would definitely kill you, but maybe not 8000 times over... I mean once really does the trick.

If he's talking about the energy input, it seems that's a different thing according to wikipedia, and would result in an increase of 42db, which puts it at 162db, which is about the same as a 12-guage.

He may also mean that the sound is that loud at source, but as the guy was probably trying to say as he was squirming, the distance matters. The sound energy will be dissipated over a 2D shell and so I'd guess it drops off proportional to distance squared plus some extra for loss as it goes.

All of that is in air, it's quite a different matter in the water as I think the force is transmitted more efficiently.

Either way, every 10 seconds for months? No thanks.

What he neglected to say, and would be important, is at 25% higher it is loud enough to cause permanent deafness, <50% higher, around 180, that's loud enough to kill a human. I wish he had asked the witness if he would sit for double the original volume, would that be disruptive? Now ask Trump.
16000 times louder....16000 times, when 2 times louder is well beyond the level that is deadly. Let that sink in. 8000 times louder than deadly. That's not only deafening for hundreds or thousands of miles in every direction (sound travels farther with less loss under water), it's undeniably deadly for miles....every time they ping it....to nearly everything. That level of sonic energy can shatter stone, what would one expect it to do to a tissue paper thin swim bladder?

I am astonished they're still trying this tech after the outrage at the hundreds or thousands of dolphins and whales it killed early on, years ago.

The sky is not the limit

Payback says...

To be fair, aerial shots used to be done in planes and helicopters. With all the exhaust or downdraft and much MUCH louder noise.

Now a giant wasp spooks them for a couple minutes. The drone used here is one of the small ones. Probably no more than 6-8 inches across. The big 6 and 8 fan monstrosities are being used for heavy loads more and more. More commercial/industrial than video.

MAGA Catholic Kids Mock Native Veteran's Ceremony

newtboy says...

The Christian right wing kids left the March against choice unchaperoned and decided to be morons and intimidate this small group.
Edit: New videos show both groups were antagonize by a group of black Israelites first, not that it excuses the kids.

The articles I've read said the native group was performing a closing ceremony when the kids approached them. The leader tried to retreat to protect his group when the smirking kid and others stood in his way while the rest mocked him with derisive Indian noises, insults, derisive laughter, screams, and Trump slogans.

No surprise you defend this, they wore the right that, so must be the good guys.
Fortunately most others aren't so deluded.
At the least, they represented their school and town so disastrously and publicly that there will be some consequences, but because they certainly learned to be disrespectful douche bags from their parents, those consequences will likely be minor.

And no, spitting is not Ok, show me who said it was, please.

Meeting a loud crowd of angry Neo-Nazis with a larger and louder crowd of angry anti nazis is totally appropriate. Driving a car full speed into that counter crowd from behind is not appropriate....sad I think I need to say that but I do.
Surrounding an elderly veteran who's leading a performance of a closing native ceremony and derisively mocking him and his culture, well, you think that's ok too...it's not, and it's decidedly unChristian (in theory, it's very Christian as practiced).

Yes, forming in a circle around him to interrupt his ceremony and intimidate an elderly man and small group by smirking in his face and chanting "hi-ya-hi-ya-hi-ya" while tomahawk chopping and holding up an "L" on their foreheads is berating, and is volatile. Trump asked for people doing <1% of that to be beaten before being arrested, and many were. Fuck, Bob. Try to be just a little rational and not so biased you completely lose touch with reality. *facepalm

The kids were there for "March For Life" and the Natives were there for the "Indigenous People's March."

AS usual media spins this as something it is not.. Guess why they are call FAKE NEWS.

The Native Man walked into this and he was un harmed. Not berated, not spin on. no volatility against this man.

If it were ANTFA group facing down a MEGA hat wearing dude ALL IS OK even if ANTFI spits and intimidates MAGA to leave.

Grow up Sifters.

Conductor scares two girls who were walking on the tracks

cryptoz says...

I fix locomotives, when idling they don't sound much louder then a semi idling so if the wind is in their face and they are talking I doubt they would hear it... If your talking about walking down the track, ya after some time with Loco I now walk beside the tracks and if it's been longer then 2 minutes since the last time I looked over my shoulder, I get mad at myself for being so stupid. Best stay at least 1 arm length from rail or just avoid altogether

It's not that it got boring, it's that it got taken taken over by idiots, which are 10x louder than the sensible people.

And by idiots I mean, the people who say that science is false, because a lot of it was done my men. etc

Why more pop songs should end with a fade out

vil says...

Fade-outs are (were) done for radio play (when not for artistic reasons), so that songs can overlap or someone can start speaking over the end. Youtube videos have a defined beginning and an end so it makes sense the music should go that way too.

The nice thing about fade-outs is they sometimes hold easter eggs, but mostly I find them annoying. For in-car listening I either make them louder or cut them short or both.

What I took away from all this is that a long version of "Life during wartime" is available sans fade-out, scratching a 30 year itch.

Also made me remember 70s singles which skipped on the last groove of the record - except I dont remember which ones those were...

Antifa Violence Finally Called Out by Media

newtboy says...

Dear Bob.
When I write that antifa are asshats, imbecilic, moronic, and fascists, it means I don't support them. When I write they should be arrested, it means I don't support them. When I write the left should be louder about denouncing them and separating from them, it means I don't support them. When I write I don't support them, it means I don't support them. I know you read all those posts, you replied to each of them with some red herring or another.
Damn, Bob, you're really bending over backwards to ignore my CONSTANT denouncement of antifa so you can try your hardest to deflect from the violent alt right Nazis and KKK you keep defending as peaceful protesters, even as you post video of them shooting and driving into crowds of women and children.

Damn, Bob, you just aren't capable of living in reality. Try it, it's nice here.

Edit: OK, got me. I'm sure you're just trolling out of frustration now. You cannot possibly be that dumb.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Has A Blunt Message For Nazis

bobknight33 says...

Trump did condemn, unlike Arnold's dad.

Truth and facts but left out that his dad was a Nazi.

His dad decided not to beat the loud and angry voices of the Nazi with louder more reasonable voices. His dad just joined them.

Military career[edit]
Schwarzenegger had served in the Austrian Army from 1930 to 1937, achieving the rank of section commander and in 1937 he became a police officer. After enlisting in the Wehrmacht in November 1939, he was a Hauptfeldwebel (Master Sergeant) of the Feldgendarmerie, which were military police units. He served in Poland, France, Belgium, Ukraine, Lithuania and Russia. His unit was Feldgendarmerie-Abteilung 521 (mot.), which was part of Panzer Group 4. Wounded in action in Russia on 22 August 1942, he had the Iron Cross First and Second Classes for bravery, the Eastern Front Medal or the Wound Badge. Schwarzenegger appears to have received much medical attention. Initially, he was treated in the military hospital in Łódź, but according to the records he also suffered recurring bouts of malaria, which led to his discharge in February, 1944.

Trump Disavows Racists Over and Over Again - Media silent

newtboy says...

Oh Bob...
You know this is schlock. It's not that he never said the words, it's that he only says it when forced, and never sincerely or without qualifications, and cannot seem to do it without reading a prepared script he obviously didn't write. Whenever he speaks from the heart, he's condoning, excusing, and encouraging the hate groups.
He rejected Duke after getting a week of negative press and sliding in the polls during the campaign for not rejecting him, and tried to pretend he didn't know who David Duke was.
This time it's about not being able to single out actual murderous Nazis without lumping blm and similar groups in with them.
He has never said he doesn't want their vote, and they still say he's with them and is just saying what he has to right now to placate the liberal Jew media, and actions speak louder than words, and he's not taking action and is backing off his stern words.
Pretty sad when the president of the United States can't denounce Nazis without waiting days for the whole story (or even after getting it) or without spreading the blame for their attacks to his political enemies, but he can denounce, deride, and debase anyone that slights him personally in an instant even if he imagined the slight.
Sad.

Why Old Screens Make A High Pitched Noise

MilkmanDan says...

In the US, I believe that component in CRTs is called a "horizontal oscillator" instead of a "flyback transformer" (but could be that they are distinct yet related things). I've always been easily able to hear those, but am not usually bothered by them anymore since CRTs are fairly rare at this point. But this video proves that my 36 year old ears can still pick it up.

I feel like my hearing is bad -- I always want TVs louder than other people so I can make out what is being said, and in normal conversation it always seems like people are mumbling if there is any background noise at all. And I'm one of those annoying loud-talking Americans, especially if I'm talking on the phone (fortunately I don't get/answer many phone calls when I'm in public). But my hearing range pitch-wise seems to be exceptionally high, and not diminishing much with age (yet).

There's a fun easter egg for people like me at the end of that video. He put pulses of that CRT horizontal oscillator pitch where you can see the "Things You Might Know" text on the red background. I recognized it as Morse code, but couldn't decipher it even though I have an Amateur Radio license (I don't do code). In the comments at YT, people are claiming that the code translates to "never gonna give you up" -- so I guess he's Rickrolling people who both A) still have young enough ears to hear that 15kHz range *and* B) are old school enough to know / recognize Morse code. That's a pretty small target audience for an easter egg!
