Infectious Disease Expert on the seriousness of Coronavirus

bobknight33 says...

The rate of spread (Ro) is said to be between 2.5 and 4.

That is the same as saying X to power of 2.5 or 4.

Would be best to shut down any County that is infected. Nip it in the bud.

The infected guy in NC last week got it from Washington state old folks home, Now we have7 official cases and nest week we should be 20+

If we can slow down the rate of spread then the Hospitals can deal with this more effectively. I think this wont happen and facilities will be over burden is short order.

On the bright side this burn through the world in few months.
Hope we all are stand standing then.

Infectious Disease Expert on the seriousness of Coronavirus

newtboy says...

Today the WHO upgraded Coronavirus to "pandemic". (Only about a month after it matched the definition)
New numbers show it's actual mortality rate is likely around 3.4% , average flu mortality is as low as .05%. (Way more testing is needed to verify that 3.4% number)

What we don't know is the rate of transmission, but it appears to be exceptionally high.
What we also don't know is that infection leads to permanent immunity. There are numerous reported cases of people being released after treatment, testing negative, then getting infected again. It's rare, and may be due to poor testing, but just assuming you can only get it once is rolling the dice with life or death stakes. I had chicken pox twice...the common misconception is that's impossible.

What Actually Happens If You Get Coronavirus?

bremnet says...

And so...in the period from Oct 1 to Dec 11 2019, the CDC reported that est. 2.5 million people were infected, 29,000 hospitalized, and about 2,400 died. This is roughly 2x the rate of infections and deaths compared to the 2018 "season". So why are we so wound up about the coronavirus? Because it has a cool name?

Foundry worker puts wet scrap metal in furnace

There's no guarantee he lived. Burns are nasty and patients can die of infection days or weeks after the initial burn.

About as close to death as anyone would ever want to be! He was lucky to have the protective glass, I wonder if any of it hit him (?)

Jim Says Christian Leaders Will Be Murdered If Trump Loses

newtboy says...

It's more like removing your gangrenous toes after removing the buckshot from your foot 4 years after you shot yourself.
Removing the source of infection doesn't fix the damage it's done.

So Christian leaders will be murdered after Trump loses? Wouldn't that be like taking antibiotics after you've recovered from an infection?

Are The Bees Ok Now?

transmorpher says...

lol Hank Green makes yet another video to tell us he doesn't know about *insert topic* I'm starting to think it's his way of telling himself he doesn't have to do anything to help.

We know exactly why CCD happens https://youtu.be/lKKVznGTni0?t=35

Commericalized bee operations (to sell honey/bees wax etc) ends up affecting pollinating species of bees in the wild. As per usual, industrialized animal farming screws up the environment.

Even local bee farming displaces and infects the wild populations, so all honey is bad.

Leave the honey to Winnie the Pooh, and swap your honey out for maple syrup or agave nectar or rice syrup etc, and this whole thing stops.

Or make your own date paste. Bit of water, bit of dates, blend the crap out of it. It's delicious on anything. Particularly with peanut butter.

Man Coughs Up A Lung Then Dies

oritteropo says...

According to the article that I read, he felt much better immediately after coughing up the clot, but the numerous complications of his heart failure (hence the anticoagulants) were too severe for doctors to be able to save him and he died a week later.

They also speculated that the cast was so good due to an infection causing a higher than usual concentration of fibrinogen in his blood making it unusually rubbery.

Illegal LEGO Building Techniques You Probably Didn’t Know

Payback says...

This illegal lego building is just wrong. All of these nuts could just make phone calls, they could spread insanity, oozing through telephone cables, oozing into the ears of all these poor sane people, infecting them. Wackos everywhere, plague of madness.

Small update re: my condition. The ultrasound didnt find a hernia, although it was an amazing amount of fun (sarcasm) having some unknown lady groping me for 30 minutes and leaving me with a small towel to deal with the literal POOL of liquid that they use to make the sensor work.

The right testicle has went down in swelling some, but it is still about 2-3 times it's normal size and it is uncomfortable sitting for any length of time.

I'm almost done with the medication they gave me (doxycycline because they think it got infected and prescription aleve, which is nigh useless for the aching pain) and I am due to go back on the 21st for a re-evaluation.

If the swelling doesn't go down more, they may want to discuss methods of draining the excess fluid. Not looking forward to that. Hopefully I will be back soon, bear with me.

The Five Eyes: How the multinational spy network has grown

newtboy says...

I must confuse them greatly, having no cell phone, no buddy or contacts lists, no calendar, and no social media accounts (besides here).

Also, my brother and I like to send each other encrypted pie recipes labeled "virus coming along nicely" or "timeline for infected monkey release", so there's that.

Why Humans Are Obsessed with Cats

Response to Trump's Video Game Montage - #GameOn

Jinx says...

A little bit of Overwatch, which is pretty PG, and Mirror's Edge, which does allow you to kill people but it isn't core to the game. I haven't played The Last of Us, but aren't there still human enemies, not just the infected? I agree it's a fairly tame list though.

Clearly Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is the only game that should have been in Trump's montage. If that doesn't incite you to violence it will probably destroy any self esteem you might have instead. Ban this sick filth please.

moonsammy said:

As far as the inclusion of violent games go, I didn't see any here where the object is to kill other humans. There were some where you fight monsters, or corrupted humans (The Last of Us), but I didn't spot any that actually feature / primarily focus on people killing other people. I'll admit to not being familiar with every game featured however.
