World's Biggest Asshole

Babymech says...

This is why opt-out systems are the only thing that makes sense - we'll never get anywhere if we expect people to be heroes in order to act halfway decently.

Racism - Democrats and Republicans switch sides?

I thought the exact same thing the first time I saw a House Centipede (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera_coleoptrata).
Even worse (for them) when scared they stand up halfway and run really-fucking-fast, holding their forelegs out like the wickedest looking alien you would never want to see running across your floor.
Unfortunately (for them) they only look scary. They're about as harmless as your average 'daddy-longleg' spider, and are good to have in the home as they eat other insects that humans consider more pest-like.

Is There A Pimple Cure?

MilkmanDan says...

Interesting. I think I got through puberty with an average or slightly below average level of acne / pimples. But my (rather large) nose is a goddamn pimple factory that refuses to subside with age. Still going strong halfway through my 30's. Not usually large / overly noticeable pimples, but small ones pretty much all the time.

I do have one complaint about the video though -- their discussion of the subject at hand is pretty much precisely 3 minutes long, then immediately followed by 38 seconds worth of shilling for Gates Foundation stuff. That may very well be a good cause, and maybe this isn't a paid advertisement for it, but it definitely falls into the category of bait and switch that is getting WAY too common in YT videos.

A) Make that segue clear, don't rush over it to try to hide it and then pretend like nobody will notice.

B) Announce clearly if you are shilling for it because you think it is a good cause, because you are getting paid or otherwise having your back scratched, or both.

C) It is a *bit* cheeky to have the ratio of content vs "special message" as low as 3 minutes vs 40 seconds.

the nerdwriter-louis ck is a moral detective

gorillaman says...

When Stephen Colbert made his Ching-Chong Ding-Dong Foundation joke the trending hashtag was #cancelcolbert, not #iwronglyfindthisjokeoffensivebutwouldneverseektosilenceitsauthor. Control is the agenda of the StinkyJeWs, page by page, paragraph by paragraph.

Let's say you're a writer for a videogame being developed by CompanyA, which in turn is owned by MegaCorpX. Some leaked bit of dialogue or a screenshot of an immodestly dressed character rubs the stinkies the wrong way and off they go, shrieking and howling: #megacorpxisracist, #firechaosengine; articles pop up on Kotaku and Polygon lamenting the state of misogynistic gaming culture, in which perverts and serial harassers like ChaosEngine are still allowed to dominate the industry and keep POC and female voices out in the cold. #boycottcompanya, #chaosengineisapaedophile, #megacorpxfundsrapeculture

Sure enough MegaCorpX doesn't like the negative, if ludicrously inaccurate, publicity and the word comes down the totem pole: the game's cancelled, or the plot has to be rewritten, or you're fired, tough luck. You really mean to tell me that no censorship has occurred at any stage of that process?

I shouldn't have to remind you that corporations aren't people. They're steered not by principle but by market forces. If I shove a boulder off a hill and it rolls into your house, I don't get to say "Well it's nothing to do with me, the rock could have swerved aside, it could have stopped halfway down or it could have turned around and climbed back up the hill. It was entirely its own decision to flatten your home."

ChaosEngine said:

What you're describing isn't censorship, it's commerce.

If some company wants to make a game that people find objectionable, then that's their business. If they decide not to make that game because of bad publicity, that is also their business.

If someone calls for a game to be banned, they had better have a damn good reason for it (child porn, etc). 99% of the time, I'll be against it, and defend the creators right to make their game.

But we're not talking about that. We're talking about people who criticise games. You may disagree with their reasons, but they absolutely have the right to voice those opinions.

Who Owns Oregon? Some Historical Context

RFlagg says...

He noted it in the description and an annotation... apparently annotations like that don't show up on embeds, probably due to some vids being spammed with them.

He even joked about it on his Twitter...
If I could learn the difference between east and west and memorize my state capitals, I might become a halfway decent vlogger some day.

Good video, I would like to offer a correction: Portland - not the capital of Oregon.

Lewis Black reads a new ex-Mormon's rant

Babymech says...

Whoa, let's not go nuts. Chaos Engine's point and yours was clear from the beginning - there's a difference between what people actually need and what people choose, say they need, or think they need. That difference was clearly communicated, numerous times, and BB2 decided to go on a weird rant about zealotry instead of owning his fuck-up.

That doesn't make him a bad person, or wrong in the grand scheme of things - I just don't want the actual truth of the matter to be overshadowed by your spirit of goodwill and understanding. Your communication was clear to a 3rd party, as was ChaosEngine's. I'm all for building bridges and meeting others halfway, but not through unnecessary self-criticism.

newtboy said:

It's even worse when one is the type of person who thinks the best compliment they ever got was 'Newtboy doesn't think the way normal people do.' That's certainly not helpful when attempting internet communication, and maddening for all when people invariably expect you to read into their posts and understand some unwritten or miss-written parts...something I am completely incapable of doing properly.
Thanks for not bailing just because I'm a pain in the ass.

How Fallout Proves Morality Is Arbitrary

JustSaying says...

I'm currently replaying Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Everybody likes me, I help everyone, I'm honest and sincere. And I kill all my enemies with headshots and/or criple them with complex bone fractures. I steal everything I deem valuable. I'm not even halfway through the game and I have killed over a hundred people.
Yep, I'm the good guy. Because the ends justify the means.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Public Defenders

Mordhaus says...

There is no right or left anymore. All that remains is rich or poor.

If you are rich, you are set. If you are poor, you are fucked. If you are halfway in-between, you pray from paycheck to paycheck that you either work your way up to rich or manage to cling onto where you are at for another month.

The idea that either party gives two shits about anyone who is not rich, is an illusion to give us hope that things can change.

F1 Dancing Marshals (no sound)

AeroMechanical says...

Pretty good race. I gave up on the 2014 season about halfway through, and though it's still almost certainly going to be a Mercedes year, I'm pretty hopeful that there will at least be some good races.

If Red Bull ends up a Ferrari customer for 2016 such as rumors were suggesting at one point, and Honda makes their engine competitive within the stupid development rules (or the rules are relaxed), maybe things will be okay by then.

I think the next step is to allow them to to put venturis under the cars using similar regulations to the Champcars in their heyday (no skirts and ride height minimums so it's more like bonus downforce). Even the DW12's today don't suffer dirty air anything like the F1 cars do. Of course, I'm not an aerodynamics expert and I'm sure the F1 designers put a lot of thought into designing their cars specifically so that they screw with the aero of any following car, so who knows how that would work. Also, the Champcars were a lot closer to a spec series than F1 is.

Hillbillies Heckle Runners at a Half-Marathon in Tennessee

ChaosEngine says...

Lol, that would definitely make me run faster. Last half marathon I did, there was a bag pipe band at the halfway point.... had to keep going just to get away from them!

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Payback says...

I'll see if it's still on the memory card, but last night my drivecam caught this sort of thing happening in front of me. An undercover police SUV had to jump the curb halfway down a block because 3 cars came to a stop in both lanes, and refused to move. He couldn't go oncoming as there was traffic and a fairly high divider.
