Baby Crabs Look Like Sand

WaterDweller says...

This demonstrates why I wouldn't mind picking up little crabs like these, but would run away screaming in horror if faced with the prospect of doing the same with spiders or insects. Crabs don't have any grip, they fall right off your hands. Spiders, however, will stick to your hands, and crawl around and up your sleeve.

Rose McIver's Sick Magic Trick Pisses Off Jimmy Kimmel

iaui says...

Perhaps she has another deck of cards ready to be selected from, quickly chooses the 4 of clubs (somehow), and then pushes that card into the visible deck through a hidden hole or as she's extracting them from the package?

After writing all that I went back and can't see anywhere she would have been able to pull another card from. She is holding the deck awfully tightly with what looks like a very specific grip, but not being a magic-doer I wouldn't be able to analyze what that means.

Ariel atom on Nurburgring VS Corvette Z06 600HP

fuzzyundies says...

Actually, if you get the windshield and transparent side-panel options, you'll be mostly fine. I drove a Honda S2000 (and later S2000 CR) for 10 years, and the top was pretty much always down (or off), even in driving rain and light snow. You simply don't get wet at > 30mph, and the occasional stoplight isn't a big deal. Stop and go traffic starts to suck though.

I also got a ride in a 300hp supercharged Atom. It was just around the block but I thought it was going to break my spine with the acceleration, cornering grip and braking distance. I was actually honestly scared.

I really wish they would make a version with a roof so it could be used in the rain. I'm just nuts enough to want one as a daily driver, but since I live in what's technically a 'rain forest' (one where it's not raining much lately, but that's besides the point) a car with no roof or windows doesn't cut it.

police officer body slams teen in cuffs

oohlalasassoon says...

I won't defend this particular cop's actions but damn there's a serious bias against cops on this site, and in the media generally. It's approaching zeitgeist levels. Guys, they're not all fucking power-tripping stormtroopers. News isn't news unless it's bad. Yes, speak out against things like this , but get a grip.

How to make a Hattori Hanzō katana (Kill Bill): Man at Arms

newtboy says...

I guess they don't understand that Hattori Hanzo is a person, not a style? You can't make a Hattori Hanzo unless you ARE Hattori Hanzo.
I'm not sure this can even be called a katana, since they use mechanical devices to make it, not pure hand forging.

According to numerous 'how to' videos and books I've seen, @Magicpants has a good point, the blade should be straight until heat treating/quenching. Some interesting stuff here, but I'm not 100% sure it's all accurate by historic katana making standards.

And yes, @lucky760, ray skin. Just like shark skin, it's like natural sand paper and would make a grip quite 'sticky' to the hand.

Fail Forward : Deus Ex - Human Revolution

ChaosEngine says...

Agreed on most points. This one is pretty variable though.

For the next decade or two, prosthetics will continue to be sub-optimal replacements for human limbs and only used in cases of extreme trauma. I think these will continue to be the preserve of the rich (they pretty much already are in terms of 1st vs 3rd world).

Eventually, we will get to a point where prosthetics are actually better than the equivalent human limb. That's several decades away IMO (accurate control is doable, but getting to the point of have a prosthetic that relay sensory information is a Really Hard Problem).

At that point, I think we'll very quickly see adoption of prosthetics become mainstream, but it will still be geared towards the relatively wealthy (see present day adoption of smartphones).

But once you get to that point, even the most basic model prosthetic will outperform a human limb. I believe it's almost certain that these kinds of limbs will be "smart", i.e. instead of accepting simple commands from the brain of "contract tricep", "grip fingers", etc, you'll see an arm that draw a perfect circle. And they'll be stronger than a human arm almost by default (not picking up cars strong, support structures aren't there for that, but certainly stronger than an olympic athlete)

So either way, I still don't think we'll see a "prosthetic underclass".

00Scud00 said:

And I could easily see a future where prosthetic limbs were more than just for rich people. Technology advances and becomes cheaper, cellphones used to be carried by rich assholes on Wallstreet, now every asshole has one. And not every prosthetic is going to turn you into Superman either, all a cybernetic leg needs to do is allow you to walk and run like a person with a normal leg, leaping tall buildings with a single bound is not a required feature. So most of those repressed cyber citizens are probably not sporting mil-spec hardware.

Watch A Beetle Spank A V8 Mustang At The Dragstrip

robbersdog49 says...

Weight distribution is just as important too. the beetle has the engine right at the back sot he weight is over the driven wheels. Very little weight up front and the body is relatively tall. That means from the start the rear wheels grip and bite hard, then any weight shift as the car accelerates and the front lifts puts more weight to the rear axle meaning even more grip. Beetles win drag races in the first 20m or so. As you can see in this video the difference in speed in the first second or two is massive. Stop the video at 39 seconds and you'll see in that first launch the beetle has gone twice as far as the mustang. That speed difference that early on is very hard to catch up.

newtboy said:

Not the best run for either car, but a clear example of power/weight being the most important measurement to consider when thinking about pure acceleration.

Black Man Vs. White Man Carrying AR-15 Legally

newtboy says...

Thank god racism is over...right?

Fucking cowards in blue. Get a grip, asshats. 10 cops, 5+ cars, dogs, weapons drawn, aimed, and cocked...for what?!? Legal open carrying while black, which is just fine if you're white?

Every day I'm more surprised there isn't a racial uprising against police and reciprocation of this behavior, ending in numerous cops shot dead by 57 bullets in self defense because they had a pen and pad in their hand. If 'well trained' officers can make that mistake constantly, why not citizens? Maybe that's why they are so pant-pissingly terrified of a black man with a gun, they know it would be reasonable for it to be used against them in self defense?

If I were black, I would be dead or in jail today. No question.
Totally disappointed in cops every-single-time lately. This shit boils my blood.

Should gay people be allowed to marry?

JustSaying says...

After months offline I just wanted some cat videos and now this...

You know, Bob, I think you are right. I may not be a US citizen but I think there should be an international law, enforced by the UN.
As a species we can not allow morally bankrupt people to define what marriage should be, especially if that definition is ethically questionable and radically diverging from what the Bible, Torah or Quran describe.
Not only are we subjected to this bizarre propaganda of how normal this sickening behaviour is, this agenda is being sold to children as well. Even if we ignore the risk factors and possible fallout from this dangerous interaction with our youth, I think we can't deny that letting somebody that unstable adopt children isn't the best of ideas.
As you point out, this minority has a strong grasp on the media and an even stronger grip around the neck of political systems around the globe. Even our economy isn't safe of their influence which everyone can see everytime they hurt american businesses with their boycotts. Like disgusting, entitled children, they throw tantrums everytime they don't get their will, no mattere what the cost.
You're right, mankind shouldn't capitulate to their demands. I say annul their existing marriages or domestic partnerships and make it illegal for those people to marry. Worldwide.
According to Wikipedia (yes, I know, Wikipedia) there are 7.2 billion humans on earth and the GOP has around 30 million members. That's only 0.4% of the world population. You're right. Why should any society capitulate for such an insignificant demographic group? Why should we allow republicans to marry or recognize their marriages as legally binding? Nobody needs them to procreate.
Having said that, as far as I'm concerned, George W. Bush is a bastard, even by westerosi standards.

bobknight33 said:

Statically speaking Gays are not even on the radar. Gays make up less then 4% of population. Just because gays have a larger demographic in media and hence have a greater opportunity promote their cause still does not change that fact that they are insignificant in the eyes of society.

And WE have decided that gay marriage is wrong and will not be tolerated.

NAMBLA probably has a bigger demographic. Either way should they be recognized?

This I did not expect...

Good job! Reminds me of a desert race I was in where my steering shaft broke, so I put a pair of vice grips on what was left and kept going. It was a bit harder to hit holes and jumps, and I had to lean over to reach it, limiting my vision, but it worked.

Where are the aliens? KurzGesagt

newtboy says...

@shinyblurry, respectfully,
The bible lies. It's stories were probably not meant to be an 'explanation' of reality in the first place, but more likely were created as fables to explain morality...thanks Constantine. (So you know, he's the emperor that ACTUALLY compiled the bible together from various oral traditions, as a political ploy to consolidate religions to make them easier to control.)

You and I have been over this claim repeatedly...Not a whit of EVIDENCE has ever been provided to me, only idiots regurgitating nonsense from 2000+ years ago-
(nonsense made up mostly by Arab/Semitic nomads thousands of years before they were written, likely made up as morality tales, also to 'explain' how they thought certain things worked before the scientific method came around to actually explain reality...examples, the sun and universe spin around the flat earth, the sun rides on a chariot, witches and demons are responsible for any bad thing that happens, etc.)
-idiots who change their interpretations when their current interpretation is shown clearly and undeniably to be completely wrong and indicative of a lack of basic understanding. As evidence goes, that's evidence that religion is wrong and harmful, not that it's correct and helpful.

If god is going to provide evidence of his existence to me, he's taking his sweet time and allowing the issue to be confused with 'facts' and 'reality'. (I'm assuming that's what you meant, and not that there would be proof of polytheism, as you wrote).

The sooner you come to grips with all that, the sooner you can stop saying ridiculous things as 'fact' and ignoring fact as either 'willful suppression of god's grace' or 'Satan tricking you'. It's odd to me that no religious people ever think the bible itself might be a creation of Satan, tricking you into terrible behavior and hatred of 'infidels', encouraging and causing behavior it specifically forbids (Eg-stoning to death/thou shalt not kill...worshiping crosses and or statues of Jesus/thou shalt not create any graven (carved) images).

I hope reality will provide everyone with evidence of it's existence, and people will stop suppressing the truth because they love their religion.

Raven videobombs NHL's Stadium Series webcam

lucky760 says...

That's the funny thing. We're both looking at the same thing but seeing different things. To me that's much more a wedge shape than a crow's short and straight.

But more importantly, the underside of the tail in a frame or two from an angle isn't as telltale as the up-close-and-personal HD view of the birds beak and head from multiple angles.

There's no question about how "ravenous" they are, and you're still not expressing any thoughts on those features.

You're avoiding all the clear evidence pointing to the obvious, indisputable truth, and hanging on with a death grip to the only slim, inconclusive evidence that you claim supports your unlikely theory. (Are you a 9/11 and moon landing conspiracy theorist?)

In the words of Elsa, let it go... Let it go! Can't hold it back any more. Turn away and slam the door already because here I am in the light of day. And you know what? The cold never bothered me anyway.

Compared to the two photos on the link above, it's not obviously the nice wedge tail of a raven.

But then, I'm not an expert, and the the ravens around here are different - the Australian Raven has a tail like the American Crow, although he's much bigger.

Russian Drifting

newtboy says...

From my experience, and physics class, that should only be true if your brakes suck. Physics don't lie, and I was taught that static friction is ALWAYS greater than kinetic friction...meaning rolling tires grip better than sliding tires every time. If your brakes are able to grip with more 'stopping' force than the sliding tire produces and still allow 'slip', they should be able to stop you faster than sliding.

Perhaps on ice that's true, or other slippery surfaces where the sensors get confused, or with really bad or broken ABS, but good ABS seriously reduces the distance to stop AND retains control by rapidly (thousands per second) pulsing the braking force up to maximum possible force without stopping the rotation. That should be more stopping force than locked tires can produce if the brakes are in good condition.

I've been in the car when an idiot friend decided to prove it to me, and slammed on his new BMW's brakes at about 70mph. The seatbelt hit so hard I had the wind knocked out of me, and we stopped ridiculously fast (WAY faster than when I've locked up non-abs cars on the freeway...repeatedly). Afterwards, he needed new brakes all around, because they gripped so hard and hot it warped the new rotors, but never locked up the tires...retaining static friction between the road and tire. Dumb...but informative.

Payback said:

Newt, I gotta tell ya, there is no quicker way to stop than locking up all four wheels, other than spinning in the other direction on a dry surface to kill inertia (makes it worse on ice). You just have no control. ABS brake systems actually increase the distance needed to stop, they just provide the ability to control and turn at the same time.
