Transformers: The Last Knight – Trailer (2017)

ChaosEngine says...

Sorry @ant, please don't take this personally.

Fuck you, Michael Bay. You're an awful filmmaker and you haven't managed to elicit 0.01% of the emotion I felt watching the animated Transformers movie as a kid and while that was basically just an extended toy commercial, at least it had... Christ, I dunno... balls? A sense of fun? A stupidly awesome 80s soundtrack?("Dare" is still on my running playlist and it brings a smile to my face every goddamn time)

Eh, screw this noise, I'm off to watch the Thor trailer again.

Tl;dr: there isn't enough alcohol on the planet to make me enjoy this abomination.

The Epidemic of Passable Movies

Thanks for the pointer. Looks like his movie is available on Vimeo- https://vimeo.com/16598921
(24 min, b&w)

And I never said that nerdwriter (or anyone else) isn't allowed to criticize movies.

My point is that anyone looking for art in modern movies will inevitably be disappointed. The art in filmmaking has been replaced with business. And like @artician mentions above, creative work has to appeal to a large audience.

I'm not saying that there aren't any well made artful movies anymore, just that the ratio of those to hollywood-factory-churned-mediocre-fest movies is steadily decreasing.

So there. He has written, directed, edited, and even done sound work. (though to be honest, I have a bigger profile on IMDB than him, and I'm not exactly well-known)

Yup, that's exactly how ads should be.

If your product is better or offers unique benefits, then by all means tell us; but don't tell some almost entirely unrelated story about some kid who stayed up all night wrapping presents for his mum because GIVE US YOUR MONEY.

If, on the other hand, you do want to convey a message or story - become a writer, filmmaker, painter, poet.

So ads can never anything in them that are anything more than superficial messaging?

What happened to the days when everyone played the top selling blockbusters on piano? Jurassic Park, anyone? Hello, idiot filmmakers, anyone home? Anyone? Fucking listen to Danny Elfman --whose songs make radio, television and film last forever!!! *hums the Simpsons theme*

Kevin Smith Shares A Moment With Daughter Harley Quinn Smith

MilkmanDan says...

Kevin Smith is an awesome guy. ...A bit hit or miss as a filmmaker to my personal tastes (I *hated* Tusk), but he's still awesome.

Stuff like this where it is just him being himself makes for excellent entertainment. His "lecture" tour videos at universities "An Evening with Kevin Smith" are great.

I loved Kevin Smith back in the Clerks days (hell, I even thought Mallrats had its moments).

Less of a fan these days, but hard not to smile at that. Dude may not have lived up to his initial promise as a filmmaker, but I'm with @Sheppard, he's just a frickin' awesome human being.

What Does YouTube Do To Your Video After You Upload It?

hamsteralliance says...

Vimeo is better, but it's still pretty low. I'd like for their bitrates to be at least double what they are right now. 4x would be ideal, but I know even 2x is asking a lot.

For instance, the "Posing and Rendering CGI Characters" video from Filmmaker IQ:

Youtube 720p - 782 kbps video (44 khz 125 kbps audio / 178MB file)
Vimeo 720p - 1,077 kbps video (48 khz 256 kbps audio / 135MB file)

Youtube 1080p - 1,474 kbps video
Vimeo 1080p - 2,545 kbps video

Also, if downloads are enabled for the video on Vimeo you can download the original file, which looks like this:

Vimeo 1080p original - 10,100 kbps video. (1.35 GB file)

So, what's a good streaming video host then? Vimeo?

Jurassic World, Jurassic Values

poolcleaner says...

Jurassic Park fans only give a fuck about the dinosaurs, okay? Check the discussions at IMDB. I don't think the average moviegoer understands the concepts of morality and heroic action -- and neither do your average filmmakers.

They wanna see references to previous movies in the franchise and then see people terrorized by fucking dinosaurs while the heroes escape the carnage and fight them like it's a video game. And yeah its important that hot people are in the movie and that they hook up.

The older brother's character shows young boys that there are plenty of fish in the sea so who cares about your nagging girlfriend, go out and get some. Time for love when you're in your 30s. Everything leading up to that is a vagina, boobs, and a mouth.

Jurassic Park, fuck yeah.

Movie Violence Done Right

JiggaJonson says...

I feel like I've been saying this for years about a variety of different films, mostly super hero genre crap.

When Wolverine cuts off someone's arm, I don't need Tarantino blood, but nothing happening doesn't make sense either. It's demeaning and belittling to the audience when filmmakers pander to the PG13 crowd.

Being a filmmaker, I am fully aware how far from reality they can be. I was attempting to make a lame joke, so I apologize as well. I just assumed bears are aggressive, and walking up to one may not be the best idea. I think I would have a heart attack having to stand ground against a bear, or at least have wetter pants afterwards. Have you ever seen or heard about anyone trying to approach or pet/hug one? I have seen a few folks attempt to get close to elk and bison, and the look of complete shock on their faces after the animal has launched them a few feet in the air gets me every time. I love the title of your blog by the way, a bit bummed I cannot read it.

I wasn't meaning to be a dick, but I was. I apologize.
It's not the number, it's the experience that comes from living with them. I have chased (stood ground) against enough just to know, but really I was reacting to your suggestion that watching a film about wildlife versus living with it was somehow superior experience.
And that's where I'm an assuming-asshole. I forget humans are universally stupid, and where they're not assuming things they see in movie are accurate portrayals of the real world, they're just making assumptions about other peoples life perspectives from their forum posts. /

Is it okay to ask a commenter what about the video they didn't like, if it is not stated in the comment? Not for the sake of arguing, but to learn more about what appeals to them? I am a short filmmaker, so love discussing how to make my craft better by discussing others work.

I base how I've done it on the rules, which say " Down voting is useful for when you find something you really don't like or just feel does not belong on VideoSift."
I have to really dislike something to downvote it though, I don't use it for things that just aren't my taste.

X-Men - Color and Costumes

MilkmanDan says...

I kind of get it. But on the other hand, every time you change mediums the way you tell the story changes. Every time a movie comes out based on a book (I mean an all-text novel, not a graphic novel / comic), most people that love the source book *think* that they want the movie to be a 100% verbatim adaptation. But the medium just doesn't work the same way.

Describing a setting or a character might take many paragraphs in a book, possibly spread out over multiple chapters or even multiple books. In a movie, *bam* -- you put it on screen, and you can see it. Done. On the other hand, describing a character's motivations can be done very succinctly or in great depth and detail in a book, but it is harder to do that in a purely visual medium like film.

Wolverine's color scheme and costume design works in comic books. His mask/hat thing with the horn-like points works in the comics. But in live-action film, what materials can look or behave like either or those things, and not be jarringly weird? Even cosplay type stuff is generally built to look good in still images -- not necessarily in video, being subjected to action-movie kinds of physical motion. I believe the directors / filmmakers when they say that they have tried more authentic costumes, and felt that they "didn't work".

Deadpool was a very good example of how it *can* work to move the imagery in a direction visually closer to the comic books. But I think the best we can hope for is a happy medium where *some* visual cues are adapted from the comics, in the situations where those things adapt well to the format.
